I’m not in to actors, fawning etc.. but he was brilliant.. you knew if he was in a film it would be great viewing..

He never gave a bad performance, did he?
Always top quality.
One of my favourite films is 'Scarecrow' starring Gene and Al Pacino.

Their dog was found dead too. No foul play suspected so I’m thinking CO poisoning too. To anyone reading this, get detectors… and if you have them already, make sure they’re working regularly!!!! ☹. X
Sad thing is, she had another good 30 years in her.. still young..

God, sad week for celeb deaths- Gene was a great actor, shame we didn’t get to see much of his talent the last 20 years though

I can't tell you how shocked I am, upon reading about the death of Gene Hackman. He was a brilliant actor, who deserved so much better than to remembered this way.

They were apparently almost mummified when they were found. Why wasn't anyone checking in on them? 😔

I urge everyone to wait until a Post Mortem has been done and a toxicology report is back.
TMZ etc are known to make up all manner of rit just to get clicks.
And other news sites just copy & paste without fact checking.

Been shocked about Gene Hackman and his wife and dog all day. It's how things may have happened more than anything since he was 95.

Going to watch the Poseidon Adventure later in his honour, I love that film.

I've got a theory now that more details have been released. At first I thought this was a case of accidental death (Hackman falling or having a seizure) and the wife couldn't take it. Either tested pills on an old dog with poor health or the dog ate them accidentally.

But then my theory changed. The couple is outdoors when Betsy feels ill (heart problems?) and rushes in to get her medication. She fails to take it on time though and collapses on the bathroom floor. Gene being older and slower to move shouts at the door if everything is ok, hearing her rush to the bathroom. He unfortunately either trips and falls in the mudroom/foyer (sunglasses and cane next to him) or has a stroke and dies too. The door is left open because he was at the door just coming in. The garden gate is locked so the dogs have access outdoors but the maintenance guy cannot get into the house when he arrives.

Now I hear Gene's pacemaker has last been operating on February 17th. The medication found is thyroid meds, Tylenol and diltiazem for high blood pressure and chest pain. No cause of death could be determined at the autopsies. So it gets more strange and mysterious. I think this might be accidental and coincidentally happening to two people at the same time but we will see. A sad end to a couple who evidently really cared about each other.

People are saying awful things online about how his daughters must've surely hated his "mail order bride from Asia". In reality Betsy Arakawa was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and was a concert pianist. Later she ran a clothing store with her friend up until her death and was the editor for Gene's books.

He really was one of the greatest. I have my father to thank for introducing me to the world of cinema and also to Hackman's work. His presence was always impressive without being grandiose, some have said he was never caught acting and that is true. One of those great actors that live their roles and steal each scene even though looking so ordinary their faces disappear into a crowd. He was also really good at showing the cracks in a person who appears powerful and menacing and revealing the vulnerability within. Will have to see a couple of his films this weekend. The Conversation, French Connection, Absolute Power, maybe Night Moves. R.I.P. Mr. Hackman.

@Debra_Whinger I also think Betsy has had a medical emergency and died suddenly, which started this very tragic and undignified end to their lives. Hackman was very reclusive and private. I think the last photo's of him were taken nearly a year ago, when he appeared very frail and holding on to Betsy's arm. Betsy was almost certainly providing some degree of informal care. A year is a long time when you're 94/5 and it isn't entirely unexpected that his mobility and cognition could have deteriorated further since then.

Hopefully once all the details are fully known the media will slink away and let them both rest in peace.

Totally agree also I wonder if a lot of his films will be shown on TV as a tribute, they should be RIP both of them💔

I thought exactly the same, that something had happened to Betsy, and in rushing (as much as you can rush at 95) Gene had tripped or fallen or just collapsed. Incredibly sad for both of them.

I think that any emotional distance between Gene and his children is probably the inevitable result of having a father who was a very famous actor and away working a lot of the time when they were younger. I'm sure I've read that Gene said he was very focused on his career to the detriment of his first marriage, seems likely that would have affected his relationship with his children too. I also don't see his marriage to Betsy as the typical 'rich guy marries much younger woman', given the length of time they were together and also that they didn't have any children together (I very much side eye men having kids into their 70s, especially when they already have older children).
