Every single outlet which mentioned John Prescott referred to his 'battle' with alzheimers. It really irritated me - it's a progressive, incurable disease. There is no 'battle'. I don't know why the media are characterising it that way, surely they can just say he died peacefully and had been suffering from alzheimers?

It is a battle though, my mum has it and she knows it. Only in the last stages do they not battle, because they just can't.

It IS a huge battle though, for the sufferer and even more so for the family.

It's also polite and respectful to say someone battled the disease. Would people like it if their old mum was described as having given up against the cancer etc. No. It's giving them some final dignity to say that they battled as hard as they could.

I think it's just the modern convention. We like to have the comforting idea that we can fight fate, because it suggests the possibility we might win (even when there is no chance of this).

There are plenty of ways to say someone died with x, died of/from x, suffered from/with x, died due to x, succumbed to x, which get the information across without the battle/fight word being used. Bravely or courageously are better adjectives.

When my friend was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, she was so despondent at the feeling she should somehow 'battle' this thing that couldn't be battled, particularly when she felt ill and exhausted, and it added to her emotional pain. That’s why I hate the phrase.

What you’ve described is the battle along with family and friends watching the suffering, it’s not always meant in a physical way it’s all aspects of their awful illness x

A common phrase used here is , after an illness bravely borne ! I prefer that tbh but it’s up to the family at the end of the day what obituary they put out.

RIP Bob Bryer, who was the drummer with My Chemical Romance for a few of their most successful years. He was only 44. Last seen on November 4th and his body was only discovered at his home in the last couple of days. So sad to think that nobody thought to check up on him during that time. I think it was his dogs barking that alerted someone

He had posted online a few times over the years about having enough and wanting to give up because he was done, and the only reason he didn't was because of his family. I know a lot of people turned on him because he called out Mikey for constantly cheating on his wife, including with someone who was just legal. Some of the fans said some crappy stuff to him, including telling him to kill himself even knowing about his issues.

Terry is one of the names I remember. Dementia is a b, as it changes someone to the point you don't recognize them anymore. My Nana went quickly, but my aunt's MIL lasted over 20 years with it and was a shell of the person she used to be at the end.

Yeah my grandparents always loved watching the snooker I could still name all the players and nicknames lol .Dementia aka the living death such a horrible illness for both patient and family at least his suffering has ended x
