Hello 👋🏼
I’m new to this thread & I’m so glad I’ve found one about pups!
I’ve just been gifted my first puppy (pedigree whippet) and I wish I’d have known how exhausting it was going to be!
I need some words of encouragement to know it does get easier…please 🤣😭

It takes a while but put the work in and it gets so much easier. The love you will get from
Your pup is amazing. Nothing makes me happier than snuggling up to my boy but a year ago I was questioning everything!

Do you crate train? I found putting my pup in there for a nap or two in the day helped me a lot as it gave me time on my own. I found helped me and a friend said the same. Also helped as my pup was always on the go if I was around and only settles properly when he is on his own, so it let me and him relax.

It does but its not quick. Is there another adult in the household? Tag teaming can work and can help prevent the puppy blues taking too much of a hold.

Yes we’ve chosen to crate train which I did need a bit of persuasion to do but I’m glad I made that choice now!
Because I WFH I constantly feel like I need to be entertaining her & I think it’s tiring both me and pup out 😴

Yeah there is, although he works 12hrs & I wfh so during the day it’s down to me…I do jump for joy when he walks in at 6pm 🤣

I don't think I'd ever have a dog if I couldn't crate train them. Yeah when I first got my dog as a puppy I thought he'd eventually go to sleep but he just wanted to play and play and he gets grumpy when he is tired. So I started enforced naps as I'd read about them online and they helped a lot. He is one now and only just started settling a bit when I'm with him as I think he thinks he is missing out on something if he sleeps. I can tell when he is tired as I can see his eyes slowly closing when he is playing tug, but he just doesn't give in 🤣

Well, I can't believe Little Girl is a year old now, so I guess no longer technically a puppy. It's been a learning curve and this thread has been a great help to a total novice like I was, so thank you everyone. I wouldn't change a thing, but sure don't miss those needle sharp baby teeth and 2am trips to the garden 😂

The sock and slipper thief is recovering well after being spayed and I am looking forward to many more adventures together 🐕

Aww she is definitely still a puppy. Our girl is 2 and a bit and I still refer to her as our puppy, especially when she is being a nutcase zoomying around the park. Need to keep reminding myself of those razor teeth and garden trips when I get broody for a 2nd puppy :ROFLMAO:

Hi everyone, rescued a puppy 2 weeks ago and thoroughly drained. Lots of tears and regrets, but I'm feeling better most days, and reading here has been a comfort.

I'd be really grateful for any long lasting chew recommendations - puppy is 12 weeks/11 kg. We got him pizzles (didn't realise they were knobs 🤢), his first lasted him a few days on and off, but now he can finish one in half an hour and we're terrified of him choking on it.
He has a frozen Kong in the evening so we can watch telly for a bit and relax, but I want to keep that special and give him something less exciting in the day so I can get chores done or nap (or cry in peace 🤣).

Thinking about paying for Will Atherton's online training course - did anyone do similar and have any recommendations?
We're starting an in person training class next week but feeling lost and the idea of someone telling me week by week what to do is very appealing, especially with the crate which feels like a flop at the moment.

Licki mats, spread natural yoghurt, dog safe peanut butter, blueberries, frozen sprats etc on it and freeze.
Will keep the pup occupied for ages
Natural chews (like the pizzles) are fab- my boy is 18 months/ 40kg. He loves a giant beef braid, or a pork roll.
He also loves the jurassic bones that are £3.99 in the range, however I wouldn't recommend one of those for puppy teeth.

In person training is always going to be better than online, and the best is one to one training tailored to your needs and the needs of your pup.

My only regret is that I didn't start with my trainer sooner.

Thank you so much. I was put off licki mats because I thought he would finish it in seconds and just chew it (he's very food motivated), but I didn't think to freeze them!
Thank you for the advice, you're right, online is going to be generic and rigid. I think I will get a long term trainer lined up for after this short intro course we've got booked :)

I started to freeze licki Mats for my dog. He is very fussy with food though so I blend fish/meat with water and put treats in it and freeze it. Or if he has wet food blend that with water so then he isn't getting extra treats. What actually worked best was a slow feeder bowl as it was deeper so was more stable in the freezer

Hi hope it’s okay to post here I’m looking at getting a puppy in the next few weeks some adverts state puppy will not be kennel club registered is this a problem? My last dog was but for reference I don’t plan on breeding the dog or anything it will be a family pet for me & my teen daughter, it’s been a good few years since I had a puppy (lost my precious boy 4 years ago) and never thought I would consider another dog but I feel now is the right time, any tips on what I need to look out for please? Obviously I’m aware to see puppy with mum ? Dad if possible? Some seem really high priced some cheaper I’m not sure which is best tbh?! I don’t want to get it wrong so any advice? I’m looking on champ dogs & pets 4 homes is there anywhere else? I would want the puppy to come from a family brought up environment, I’m also wary of puppy farms too so would appreciate any tips? Nervous and excited 🫣☺

When I was looking champdogs seemed a good place to look and was recommended to me as a good place. I did contact a few breeders on there but then went against most of the advice I'd give people 😆. If I did it again though I'd pick my breed and look for a breeder who did health tests particular to that breed, usually if you Google the breed and health tests that the parents should've had before breeding. I'm not 100% sure but I remember something in champdogs where if I clicked a breed/breeder it would show some recommendations for what should be health checked.
As you said see the mum. A lot of good breeders may have waiting lists for a puppy so better to contact sooner than later. I've seen some that will instead of letting you go and pick a puppy will match the puppy based on personality. Some will also have contracts to sign and I think it's the same as with cats but may be wrong but if KC registered I found good breeders will put them on the inactive register so if they are bread the pups can't be registered to prevent breeding. I also wouldn't get a puppy unless it has had its first vaccine just to make sure it's been vet checked beforehand. The person I got my dog from asked me if I wanted the vaccine doing before I picked her up because she said some people don't want it doing as they'd rather get a package deal at their own vets. I was just more concerned it would be easy for them to say the pup was vet checked if I didn't get any vaccine record.
I think some breeders will also have a clause to say you can return the puppy within a certain time frame if any health issues so I'd maybe check that and if so get a health check asap before I got too attached.
You could always Google the breed as well as a lot of breeders have their own websites which goes into detail about their breeding

Hi I have a crossbreed so KC registration wasn't on my radar. I would say same as above in asking for health testing etc. You can also ask in Facebook groups for specific breeds whether there are any recommended breeders. Follow your gut too, I walked away once when I realised a breeder had given a false name and also another when the breeder wouldn't let me meet mum (said she would be upset seeing me with the pups).

I also advise not telling children what you are planning for as long as possible as they will start pressuring you to hurry up when really it's something you need to take your time with.

I'd also advice getting insurance. And looking into puppy classes if that's what you'll do as from what I found they get fully booked so best to get your name down/on a waiting list 😄

yes will do, i definitely would walk away if something was off, fortunately my daughter is of an age where she understands we need to wait to fight the right pup for us, thanks for your advice

My 7 year old daughter won't stop asking me for a puppy and I would love one too but I am in two minds about it. Firstly, it's only me and her at home so when I'm working I'd need to take the dog to my mums to be minded as I'm out for 10 hours on the days I work. Secondly, I'm worried that I'll regret it. When training is challenging I'm scared that I'll wish I'd never bothered. Any advice would be appreciated.
