Someone gay in the entertainment industry is such a non story.

The sun and others regularly gay bashed back in the 90s, we're a world apart from that these days.

Yes, I completely agree - it’s better but certainly not perfect.

I’m watching the Barrymore documentary and not to derail this thread but one of the contributors is talking about how a married, famous entertainer with a strong family image coming out in the 90s would have been associated with ‘nightclubs, rent boys and moral ambiguity’ and he’s spot on. It wasn’t celebrated and thought of as brave, there was a definite feeling of ‘we’ve rumbled one of them’. It was very very different to now. Thank fuck attitudes have changed and we hopefully continue to become more broadminded and accepting.

Edited to add: I’m not sticking up for PS. I’ve always thought he was a vindictive little twat and now I think he’s gonna be utterly unbearable but people saying he should have come out years ago.... Regardless of whether someone is famous or not, it can be an incredibly frightening, stressful, lonely process to go through even in today’s society - not everyone has the strength to do it.

The bit about amanda holden saying philip wanted rochelle to have the job... That seems perfectly fine for me. In lots of jobs the person who will be working alongside the replacement the most usually has a big part in the decision making

I do like philip but i guess nobody truly knows what is going on behind the scenes... For all we know he could be thinking he runs the show and is the king of the show

Yup. He will end up as the oldest runner in tv. He will have that job at 'Loose Women' for as long as the programme lasts, but he obviously wanted to be in front of the camera. He probably thought that hooking up with Pip Schofield would be an accelerated route to tv fame.

I believe Fleet Street probably knew. I work once a week for a journalist couple for one of our top newspapers and my gosh some of the stories i hear from them!! the tactics and manipulation from both sides (press and celebrity) involved and the deals and trade offs that go on a regular basis are truly scandalous!!!

One common and less shocking tactic used for instance is the ‘leaking’ of insignificant/dramatised stories in exchange for not running the true story or holding off on it giving the person involved time to get their affairs in orders before it breaks.

It’s fair enough to say the newspapers don’t want to be seen to ‘out‘ people in 2020 as the days of ‘The News Of The World’ must be seen to be over (even if that isn’t really the case behind the scenes)

Exactly this perhaps she was the one who decided she didn’t want to be with him any more and he took the opportunity to let the whole world know he was gay and cover up the bullying accusations...two birds with one stone maybe?

i hope the whole thing has happened because she has met a man that she wants to be with. imagine wasting a lifetime covering for a closeted man- if that's what she has done. i'm sure she'll regret that one day, regardless of the lifestyle. what an awful, awful waste!

Why does Philip get praised for coming out and being brave etc when being gay now isn't a big thing - especially in showbiz and especially in London...

I really hope his wife has known all along and was happy to go along with it or something and it's not something she's only just found out - she's the only one I've any sympathy for.

I don’t think it’s fair to say there’s no such thing as homophobia and it wouldn’t damage his career 27 years ago.
Whilst I think his statement was contrived and planned to help his public persona, it doesn’t detract that it is still an unfair playing ground for lgbtqplus community. I don’t think he’s done it any favours as he seems the type that would have pulled the ladder up behind him.
But, an out man would not have had his gig full time. Not even ten years ago. LGBTQplus people rarely get lead straight playing roles. There is still systematic homophobia within sport and other industries.
Whilst entertainment is further toward than most fields, it’s not as much as we thing. Whilst there might be gay hair dressers, set designers etc. Actual gay men fronting shows like (my fave human ever) Rylan are rare.
For me that’s what’s annoying. Open secret or not it could of been something positive. But instead it feels lIke it was done for financial gain.
hopefully someone watching felt empowered by it. Because in 2020 there are still people who don’t believe they can live their life being who they really are.

As I think this could be referring to an earlier post of mine, to clarify I absolutely believe there is still homophobia today, but it’s not RIFE. That’s the word I objected to. And I absolutely believe it would’ve affected his career back then, as his core fan base and appeal wasn’t to gay men but housewives and young girls. Which is why the bearding makes it feel manipulative for his success.

hiding sexuality will go on whilever there’s money to be made from appealing to a demographic that’s bigger than your natural one, ie young men to girls.

Maybe his wife has known and been happy with her life? She has 2 beautiful children, holidays, a lovely home and a companion who she is obviously fond of and vice versa. Maybe that’s been enough for her? I do think the timing is very suspicious and certainly a damage limitation exercise but I don’t think we can say how Steph feels until she’s told her side of the story.

She might be happy in another relationship with someone else. Maybe she wants to move in with him or such like. I hope this is the case but I really don't think this is news to her nor do I think this will be a bombshell in her life, just a bit of gossip with her mates over a glass of wine this lunchtime
