Also this, when asked about his wife Steph.

Phil: "I have no secrets, we've never had any secrets."

He goes on to say;
"She is amazing. She's incredible. I have never in my life, there is nobody in my life who would have supported me the way, as a wife, the way she has supported me. She's astonishing. "

That makes me think she knew all along and if not right from the very beginning, then very near to it. Saying you have NEVER had any secrets is a big statement to make. So prehaps it was a marriage of convenience that suited them both.

This is what I think. I remember Phillip back in the day on kids TV and I always thought he was gay and remember being surprised when he announced his marriage. His wife was the Production Assistant on his TV show. Maybe they did have an arrangement and it wouldn't be the first time it's happened in showbiz circles.

I honestly thought he was gonna say he was seriously ill

Sorry I didn’t finish my sentence!
Why would he come out if it wasn’t true do you think?
Something to throw attention away from this dispute between him and Ruth. I have absolutely nothing against people who are part of the lgbtq community, its just something with him I don't reallly believe it.

That makes total sense, she wont have been immune from the rumours of him kissing/sleeping with men around his workplace. So you'd think this would've all come to light sooner had she truly been in the dark about his sexuality.
I think that was his way of letting people know, that he hasn't hurt her, he's never lied to her and she's always known.
It felt like an extremely rehearsed interview. Something he has obviously thought about a lot.

It seemed very rehearsed to me. They all sounded like actors reading from a script!

It is a very big thing to say and he’s trying to tell us something by saying it but I can’t work out what it is. Maybe someone was going to tell her he was gay so maybe he’s saying ‘Don’t bother trying to come out of the woodwork with your stories because she knew’ I don’t know

I agree with you

Wasn't Queer as Folk on television around that time?
What happened to Toby Anstis and Otis the Aardvark?
Did Gordon the Gopher know about Schofe all along?
So many questions!

I watched the clip and picked up on this too. Holly seemed to indicate she’d known for a long time too so this def isn’t out of the blue.

Bit later - 1999 according to IMBD.

I never watched it but my mum did. Not for very long though! She said to me "I had no idea they did stuff like THAT!" Apparenty, it was pretty graphic.

She's still loves the gays though and is a massive (and I mean massive) Adam Lambert fan - from the minute she clapped eyes on him on American Idol

ETA - sorry, I thought you'd replied to my post but it was someone else's.

I don’t think it’s fair to say there’s no such thing as homophobia and it wouldn’t damage his career 27 years ago.
Whilst I think his statement was contrived and planned to help his public persona, it doesn’t detract that it is still an unfair playing ground for lgbtqplus community. I don’t think he’s done it any favours as he seems the type that would have pulled the ladder up behind him.
But, an out man would not have had his gig full time. Not even ten years ago. LGBTQplus people rarely get lead straight playing roles. There is still systematic homophobia within sport and other industries.
Whilst entertainment is further toward than most fields, it’s not as much as we thing. Whilst there might be gay hair dressers, set designers etc. Actual gay men fronting shows like (my fave human ever) Rylan are rare.
For me that’s what’s annoying. Open secret or not it could of been something positive. But instead it feels lIke it was done for financial gain.
hopefully someone watching felt empowered by it. Because in 2020 there are still people who don’t believe they can live their life being who they really are.

Pip and Stephen Mulhern must use the same botox person, they have similar faces nowadays. A bit of 'his n his' going on there
