I finally made my way back to the GP as it had reached the point where I had to do something. (I’ve been off HRT since last year, when my previous GP suggested trying lithium instead:mad:.) This made me feel so angry I didnt bother going back to see someone else ( which is a really silly decision on my part).

She told me I was too young to be having perimenopause symptoms. For clarity, I’m 3 months off turning 47. My periods have been all over the place for a long time, my sleep is ( and has been) awful for a long time, and I’ve recently started getting hot flushes at night (a new and horrible symptom). On top of that, I’ve developed joint pain and go through spells of intense paranoia. There are other symptoms too, but these seem to be the most prominent and I’d really hoped I could avoid the hot flushes (why I thought this may happen is anyone's guess) . No such luck though :(

A colleague at work suggested I try a wool duvet , has anyone else used one?. They seem counter intuitive to me ( wool being warm and all that) but apparently they also help regulate temperature. I am reluctant to buy one on the off chance as they are quite expensive. Another tip I have been given is to use cotton bedding.

Anyway going back to my appointment last week, I asked to see the nurse this time around (she can issue prescriptions as she’s registered). I really wish I’d done this sooner, because she was brilliant. She listened to what I had to say , agreed that I am perimenopausal (woo , at last someone believes me!), and said I should be back on HRT.

We had a chat about the different options, I explained that I’ve tried both gel and tablets before but didn’t find them that helpful. In the end, we decided the best plan would be to have a Mirena coil fitted and try the gel again when i had the coil put in.

There’s a bit of a waiting list for the Mirena, so in the meantime she has given me Evorel patches. I’m still on the oestrogen patch at the moment (progesterone starts in about a week). I’m not sure if they’re helping yet though. I had a couple of days of headaches which have now stopped, but I’m also feeling quite bloated. I really hope that passes as well.

The Mirena is due to be fitted in October so i am looking forward to this being done. I have my fingers crossed that the gel and the coil work. I am also pleased that I did go back and try again. The last experience really upset me - to be told i was lying about my symptoms basically. 😩. Horrible woman.
On the wool duvet, I have one from The Wool Room and can confirm it is amazing. I am lurking in here as I am the right age for peri but not there yet hopefully lol. Anyway I have a summer and winter weight but honestly could use the winter one in summer and vice versa because they do an excellent job of regulating the temperature. I used to sweat and get hot at night badly with a synthetic duvet but switched to wool and also got a wool mattress topper and have not looked back. Bloody amazing. If I had to buy again I would have been less of a penny pincher and got the more expensive one you could shove in the washer though.

A friend who has a coil told me recently she'd had issues with the gel, her Dr has just prescribed a HRT spray. Which she is finding far more effective.

It's shocking that your GP dismissed you, 45+ is firmly in peri territory. Glad to hear your recent experience was much improved.

Forgot to say, I also switched out all my covers and sheets to 100% cotton.
This is good to know so thank you for sharing your thoughts. Will take a look at the wool room website .

Ooh ok. I haven’t heard of a HRT spray before. How does she use it? Is it an in the mouth spray? Or spray on her body?

Apparently, you spray it onto your forearm.

I realised my previous post sounded as though there was a connection between her gel issues and the coil. It wasn't meant to suggest that, as that wasn't the case. She's a long term coil user, the gel issue was separate.

Thanks for sharing - going to go and take a look myself 😀
It arrived on Wednesday and it does have a slightly funky taste, earthy is how I would describe it. I’m stirring it into coconut milk and it’s just about bearable. Will report back on whether it makes a difference

Absolute rubbish that 47 is too young for perimenopause. Some women go through the actual menopause in their 30's FFS. (Yes, it's rare but it does happen). Honestly, I would change GP's because this one is talking out of their a.

Ah, I see that you saw the nurse, that's good. But change GP's if you can.

im on The spray at the moment but I don’t think it’s strong enough dose for me so I’m gearing up to. Make an appointment to ask about patches (gel won’t absorb properly for me)

I love the ease of the spray! So I’m disappointed that it doesn’t have the ability to go up to a highr dose like other hrt products.

for anyone wondering

it’s so simple. One to three spays on the forearms it’s dry in less than 3 mins then you get on with your day! It has to be left a minimum of two before you touch anything or cover it but ye really simple and easy Comes in a small container so great to put in luggage or handbag etc. the box has a numbered grid to tick of the sprays so you can keep track of what’s left in the container.

while I’m in can we have a discussion or can get your opinions on the different patches please as that looks like my next avenue of treatment but I know people have vast changes of opinions about the different versions and I’m quite clueless about them.

thanks.

I had to come off the patches as they did not stay on. I couldn't have a bath as they would fall off and once when I was swimming. When you say the gel doesn't absorb properly can you explain more please?

hi.

i have this issue with a lot of things like creams, gels even moisturiser and sun creams etc, the gp thinks it’s related to my circulation and medical conditions. They kind of just stay sitting on the skin rather than mostly melting in if that makes sense?

basically I’ll put it on and even an hour later it will still be tacky and wet so I can’t put clothes over the area because it will come off the skin onto the clothes. While I think I was absorbing some of it obviously i was still having symptoms so not sure how much I was absorbing so rather than add another pump which would also not absorb (especially as that would have to be inner arm because legs were used) I changed to the spray

but it was so much faff sitting without trousers on for an hour or more every night even in winter for it still to come off on clothes anyway! it was uncomfortable because my trousers were sticky all the time and my thighs were sticky and uncomfortable so after months using it I decided with the support of the gp to change to the spray. At that point there was a shortage in the patches so she and I put them as an option to the side for then.

hi Coor.

that why I changed to the spray because I was on two pumps on my legs and then because I was still symptomatic we were looking at a third pump on my very own bingo wing 😂

the thought of sitting with my legs AND my arm exposed for ages and ages and still not getting it absorbed was too much to handle so that’s why decided to move to the spray (as the patches were difficult to find at that point)

the spray I feel hasn’t been effective recently as night sweats etc are terrible again so I’m looking at moving to the patch maybe if available now but il have a conversation during my appointment when I make it.

its a shame as I really rated the ease of use of the spray!

also my last post should have said trousers OFF for a hour not on!

Have you thought about trying the Mirena @ginkypig ? This seems to be helpful for the progesterone side .. not sure about the oestrogen side if you are struggling with absorption 🤔.

The Lowdown website has some info on HRT treatments - I am not sure if your aware of it but incase your not but there is a menopause section which is helpful.

I’ve only started on the Evorol patches and change it Thursdays and Mondays. Went away to Portugal Thursday, popped a new patch on, in and out of the sea, pool, numerous showers and it’s still on! Two weeks in and sleep is definitely better, might be a bit more tired generally…but so far so fine?

@Crumpet41

thanks for that. I’ll have a look.

at the moment I’m wanting to focus on the oestrogen as I am young (was diagnosed in my mid 30’s) and it’s important for bone and cardio health due to having my hormones flattened so much earlier than what is expected.

iv got the utrogestan for my progesterone and seem to tolerate it ok but will obviously look at that in case that changes in accordance to whatever oestrogen I’m taking.

that’s why I’m asking people’s opinions on the differing patches because it looks like they may be the only option due to my circumstances meaning oral tablets are out because of the migraines gel is out for the reasons in my last few posts and spray is no longer being effective but due to my age its important that I get an oestrogen that I can use and will absorb. My symptom control is a bonus but the symptoms are an indicator wether the hrt is actually working if that makes sense

For 2 years now my hair has become greasy less than 24 hours of washing it. I started HRT a year ago and it hasn't made no difference to my hair. I hate it as my hair is lank and fine as it is and its thinning. I've tried Elvive hydra pure without success. I've looked around and shampoos advised are expensive. I can't afford them as I do not work. Is there anyone who can recommend anything that doesn't cost the earth? I hate hormones as they really mess up us women. My mum sailed through her menopause and I was hoping the same but no such luck.

Try Dove Men Care shampoo with Charcoal & Clay. I used to buy the Elvive one with clay and it was amazing then they discontinued it 😣 The dove men’s is closest I have found xx
