Met Gala 2021

For me all in all a bit disappointing. Lots of people looked lovely but as already mentioned, just like a normal red carpet. Absolutely loved Lil Nas' looks which I think were bang on the theme and suitably out there. Kim and Kanye - could have predicted this with all the appearances over the last couple of weeks dressed like it. Theme wise I think Debbie Harry also nailed it, can't really say I've noticed anyone else who I thought did. As above I think Kendall looked incredible but it's a very safe choice. Gigi has potential with her dress but the awful hair and shoes spoilt it for me.

From my understanding the theme is the celebrate American designers (correct me if I’ve interpreted it wrong) which gives a massive scope but so many are just weird. And what’s with everyone showing their knickers in sheer outfits?

I thought it was "American independence"

I might be the only one here but I loved Kim's outfit! There were a lot of bold, bright and colorful looks on the carpet (which were great) but I loved that tongue-in-cheek and almost a "fk you" statement that she made with her outfit (especially given how much she's been ridiculed in the past for her Met Gala look).

Cannot believe the amount of dead Z listers who have managed to blag an invite 🤨 There once was a time when Anna Wintour wouldn't invite Kim K until she was with Kanye, but a bunch of Youtubers and Tiktokers were there!!

And as for the outfits - so off the mark
The best theme in recent years was 2018 - the Catholicism one. Rihanna and Chadwick Boseman's looks are still burned onto my brain 😍

I’m looking through them again on the @everyoutfitonsatc account on Insta and so many really beautiful people look really cheap and tit

- Gemma Chan
- Gigi
- Megan Fox
- Dan Levy

How on Earth can you have all the stylists, products, designers at your fingertips and still end up looking like you’re going to your 1999 Leaver’s Ball at the local sixth form college?

Looking on Google it says it’s meant to honour anything and everything America. For a theme it sounds kinda…boring? It’s too big a scope I think.
Massive scope, when you consider America is a mish mash of so many different identities and cultures. No wonder its hard to pick up on the theme from looking at the outfits (plus nobody is going to dare risk the cultural appropriation accusation by going for a Native American feel).

Strange if the theme is to honour American designers. I don't generally consider them showy or ostentatious enough to warrant a Met Gala theme. I know they're not all like this but when I think of US fashion I think sleek and collected, eg Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, etc.

The Catholic year was amazing, and the futuristic one too.

Addison Rae somehow got there after appearing in the worst film ever made, and looked like she was wearing clothes from Shein.

The guestlist needs some serious tightening up.

Whether it was still Covid restrictions limiting some A-listers or what 2022 can't have so much deadwood guests.

I wondered if she was making a stand for the women of Afghanistan, the stark difference between hers and her sister's outfits, then I realised its Kim, so it's probably not that deep.

The weird thing is, as someone with social anxiety, I do kind of like it. 😬. Gets you noticed, without actually being noticed, looks nice and warm and also Covid-secure.

I agree with so many of these comments - it's all a bit meh really isn't it, the theme is definitely too broad and yes American designers as a whole are I think a bit preppy and not particularly edgy hence the boring looks I guess. Also agree the Catholic theme was by far the best, it really gave them something to work with.

And lastly - the guest list. Shocking. Not exclusive at all, it's made the whole thing a bit cheaper I think.

I think the 2020 theme would have been more Gala like because I agree that American designers aren’t that extravagant.

“In honor of the Met’s 150th anniversary, “About Time” took a look back at a century-and-a-half’s worth of fashion.”
Yes it’s broad but it’s more open to amazing fashion moments. I would have definitely worn a Victorian inspired dress if I was going.
The 2022 theme is a follow on to this which means more boring looks. I don’t think many people follow the theme anymore which is a shame. And the guest list is really below par. Tiktokers? At the Met Gala? Anna, no!

I really loved Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic imagination, China Through the Looking Glass (which the First Monday in May is about, I think it’s on Netflix.), Charles James: Beyond Fashion and Punk: Chaos to Couture.

Also they did an American theme back in 2010 with American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity so it just seems a bit lazy to 2 more a decade later?

What themes would you like to see?

Would love an architectural theme. I can't resist a bit of structure and art-deco in fashion.

The Met Gala used to hold so much meaning for me, now it seems it’s all about getting your a cheeks out in a sheer dress, chain mail (yawn!) or anyone z list nabbing an invite. Wintour needs to get a grip of it again and fast. I wanted to see SJP in a gloriously cut Tom Ford suit with a gargantuan headdress a la lady Liberty, I wanted Blake Lively swooping in all her sequinned bedazzled red white and blue glory, Gaga bringing her kooky, proper moments. But it was all a bit meh, I liked Kendall’s nod to Audrey and I thought Emily Blunts nod to Hedy Lamarr was probably the best look of the night. I also loved Keke Palmer on the live feed, she looked stunning, and her infectious personality kept it going. A disappointing year and god knows we needed the fashion world to inject a bit of uplift and oomph to our lives right now. I don’t know what Kim K thinks she is anymore but she needs to dial down the Kanye and read the assignment brief more properly next time.

Just browsing through the photos again, what struck me was how bloody miserable most of them look. All rocking the surly stare, with a few welcome exceptions. Is smiling on the red carpet not the done thing anymore?!
