After such a lengthy trial and the sifting of long and detailed evidence (in Court, not in the sensation media or among the strange fans, obvs), I can't imagine what new evidence would be used by these managers to 'prove' there were no murders. Babies died in unprecedented numbers and those deaths were not explicable by any normal factors. That's fact. Lucy Letby was convicted of their murders. Despite what the controversialists like to tell themselves, Letby had an excellent defence barrister.

But, the dreadful and willful incompetence of certain managers has been a hugely important factor in this case and I can't see how any of the actions taken at any stage can be justified, even if these people did not believe murders were taking place.

If you were responsible, especially at a senior level, for the safe treatment of newborns needing medical support, and the death rate of those newborns soared during a short time-period what would you do? Immediately call for help and take all the actions needed until you got to the bottom if it. Regardless of why it might be happening.

If you were told by senior medical staff, in unprecedented communications, that they believed another member of staff might be responsible for the deaths, what would you do? Immediately remove her and call for help and investigation. She might be grossly incompetent and covering up, she might be Typhoid Mary, she might be a psychopath, doesn't matter. You remove her, as your powers and the law allow you to, hand over to the police, tell her mad parents to go home. If it turns out she's not part of it and she makes a claim for compo for stress, so what, you pay compo. You did the right and only thing.

Compare that with what the managers actually did.

Letby is a psychopath so her feelings and responses are completely abnormal. But these people were employed at a senior level to manage, oversee and safeguard. There should be a reckoning.

Oh well, looks like the 26 internationally renowned experts will have another 12 or so cases to look at very soon! I wonder if they realised what they were committing too.

I also wonder what the narrative will be once a second hospital involved. Especially if they are from before she ever even met Dr B and Dr J!

I wish there were no harmed babies at all but because I believe she did this then I’m glad there are possibly more charges coming especially with all the pro-Letby articles the past 6-8 months. I’m very sorry that even more families will be impacted by this though, and seeing this circus played out 😔

Well to play devils advocate, presumably there were dozens of newborn babies that she looked after that were absolutely fine.
That’s like saying “but there are plenty of women Peter Sutcliffe came across/interacted with that weren’t harmed” or “Harold Shipman cared for some patients that were absolutely fine” might be devils advocate but when looking at any serial killer, they select their victims carefully and not everyone they come across become a victim…this is how they get away with it for so long!

I haven’t followed this case as closely as others- can someone fill me in on the background on these three being arrested? What does it mean for Lucy Letby?
Means nothing for Letby. Her managers were warned about her - the managers did not remove her from patient contact - she murdered more babies before she was finally removed. The investigation is looking into whether the managers' inaction was criminal.

For me, anyone that says she’s a scapegoat, my first question would always be “have you read the enquiry documents” because that in itself proves she wasn’t a scapegoat…in fact, the majority of higher management fought to keep her on the unit, they broke rules for her, they involved her parents, the occupational health support wasn’t normal practice (she got way more than she should have and was appropriate) and they actually followed the wrong internal policy for the consultants raising concerns. They should have been covered under the whistleblower guidance but they weren’t. There is absolutely nothing within the evidence of either trial or the enquiry that allows for a “scapegoat” theory to make sense…that is before you start then adding in all her weird and wonderful behaviour.

New Mumsnet poll 40 percent guilty. 60 innocent or needs retrial.🫠
What people don't realise is there is no reason to have a retrial. If there was new evidence or there was a problem with the original evidence then a new trial might be needed. You can't keep retrying the same evidence until she's found innocent. The implausible, don't quite fit, new theories won't stand up in court so are irrelevant.

Great to see the news about CPS considering new charges spreading across the different sites. And that they include possible offences at Liverpool Women's. Hopefully the fact that being made a scapegoat at two separate hospitals is highly unlikely might stop some of the supporters who have an inkling of brain left 🤞🏻

It doesn’t mean anything to Letby. It was quite clear in the Thirlwall Inquiry that senior management didn’t protect these babies from Letby (they did not remove Letby from the unit as soon as there was any allegation of harm - which would protect both patients and the employee even if the allegation is unfounded). Cheshire Police have been investigating if the negligence was severe enough to be criminal. It seems from today it’s at least severe enough for these managers to be arrested and questioned over it. Hopefully charges will follow eventually.

But surely the case against Letby should be re-examined now. Several experts have said there’s no evidence of foul play and now the bosses have been arrested for covering up the doctors’ negligence. Saved you all a trip to the comments sections of the red tops xx

It can't be a surprise to Lucy Letby or Mark Mcdonald that the police are considering further charges. A team of detectives have been working on this for years!
