SPOILER - LONG
Ok for those who are wondering about court sitting times, and why they’re so short, I thought it might be helpful if I gave a run down of what a day in court looks like doing criminal litigation (not a KC, not the high court, so would be different but they will have far less cases of far longer durations so will have plenty to do outside of court hours):
5.30am - up, breakfast etc
6.30am - leave for court (could be anywhere within a 2 hour travel radius)
8am - get to court, continue to prep cases, liaise with other side/probation/third parties/line managers to amend charges/pleas, chase missing evidence etc
10am - court starts, will have a couple of trials or up to 20 hearings depending on the court
1pm - lunch, type up hearing records, next steps, refer to third party agencies, prep for last minute cases transferred into that court
2pm - back to court
4.30pm - court overran slightly, continue typing up hearing records
6pm - leave to go home
7.30pm - get home, dinner
8.30pm - start prepping the 20 cases for the next day
11.30pm - bed
Wake up and do it again
Like I said, KC’s workload will be different but they’ll have thousands of pages of evidence etc to be reviewing, conferences with police/client/CPS, skeleton arguments to draft. Judge will be working on directions/sentencing notes etc for other matters
Even extending court 9-5 makes the work you have to do outside of court completely unfeasible
