It’s an African American theme. Does that mean she is inviting African Americans or is it just going to be full of stereotypes?
Don’t know? Think it’s for everyone to get a taste of different cultures and music…For context this is the mayors tea dance, it’s music the OAP’s would’ve enjoyed during the Derry dance hall days…How many African/American OAP’s are there in Derry?

I’m sure the OAPs will love to have a dance to Kanye.

I’m assuming it’s a black only tea dance then? Why would Derry OAP’s want to celebrate Black History Month ?

She really doesn’t care about the people of Derry or the island of Ireland 🤦🏻‍♀️

I can understand her wanting to have a black history month event but why is it African American when there have been successful black people in both NI/ROI who aren’t African American. But then for someone as ambitious as her knows where the money is. Why not even share her own culture that she is proud of?

Maybe I’m just not getting it? But why would you even suggest that people dress up to celebrate a culture they’ve got no affiliation or understanding of? I’m sure they’d rather stick to Engelbert Humperdinck than risk offending someone ,like the queens lady in waiting 🤷🏼‍♀️

She’s a BLM activist that’s based around African/ American policies…What black history makers are there in Ireland? They erected a statue in Belfast to a black anti slave advocate that visited the city once.

Phil Lynott? I bet the OAPs might like a thin lizzy tribute act at the dance.

Yes but Phils not African/America, born in England to an Irish mother and raised in Dublin. It’s African culture she’s looking to promote…Thin Lizzy is very much 70/80 ‘s not dance hall days .

Yeah, that’s my point. He’s not African American but is actually Irish. Looks like this event is in October but she is still doing the one on 9/11 which I still think is a bit distasteful. Maybe he calendar is so full of free events that it was the only day.

Yeah ,there wouldn’t be cultural diversity because he’s part of our culture . It’s dance and dress she’s looking to include .

Is there a Polish themed tea dance? I'd argue that that would have much more relevance to Northern Ireland than an African American themed tea dance. Big Polish community.

Re the African American theme - the best connection I can think of is that the US Civil Rights movement influenced the one in NI. But I don't think that's what she has in mind.

It’s Afro- Caribbean lol, shows how diverse the council is when even they’re confused.

Haven’t seen the full article but it does seem bizarre. I wouldn’t say distasteful as such but I wasn’t aware of the big Arabic community in Derry.
Apparently there’s about 1000 +( more now with the influx of asylum seekers)they’re trying to get planning permission to turn the old channel 9 building into a huge mosque.

I didn’t know she was from the Caribbean either? This is the 2nd time they have changed the event. It was first put in for the 9/11 date, then changed to October now it’s a different culture completely.

Think how the poor pensioners will feel 😂 I think she does things her way , probably didn’t consult people about the changes? By the way she speaks you’d think she owned the council instead of working for it.

Hope they serve 81 year old Seamus and Gladys some jerk chicken if it is Caribbean themed! They won’t know what hit them.
It’s all just self promotion for her. When are the next council elections?
to be fair I haven’t looked at what the Belfast mayor is doing either. Probably grifting as well.

Think Mickeys knickers are still in a twist over the Irish language signs being vandalised.

There couldn’t be that many Muslims they didn’t raise much for the mosque
