Wow. I pay £18 per hour in Newcastle. Instructor has had his company for 40 years so keeps his prices low.

I passed in a manual and now drive an automatic and honestly I’ve never looked back. The automatic is so much easier, and way less stressful. I would say unless you really need to drive a manual then don’t bother, I imagine soon that most cars will be automatic as we move to electric cars, so manuals will very much be in the minority.

I failed my first test on Thursday, and all silly as it sounds I am just so sad 😂 I put everything into my driving, went out driving every night and watched mock tests on YouTube, revised all my show me tell me questions ect. I feel completely disheartened and can’t even get the courage to go back in my car if I’m honest. I have booked another test but with the delays it’s not until the end of April 2023 and there’s no way I can see myself staying motivated until then, especially if I fail for a second time.

Does anyone have any advice? My examiner was horrid, i went the wrong way once as he was speaking to me and he sighed loudly and said I need to listen to him and not daydream?! He then went on to make chatter movements with his hand. After this I was completely threw off and he was so intimidating throughout the whole thing. I failed on letting a woman cross the road and apparently my car rolled back slightly when doing my parallel park (which I corrected in about 2 seconds) as I was correcting myself he raised his voice to say my car was rolling back and obviously went down as a serious fault. I give up 🙃

Sorry to hear this!
I have read other stories of examiner behaviour being off-putting and causing failure, which is just awful

I have failed 2 attempts and it is a horrible feeling. I cried both times (once in front of my instructor which was a bit embarrassing, but I got the feeling he'd seen this reaction before!)

I reckon you'll have it in the bag next time, try and stay motivated because if you stop now you will find it harder to start again
Learn from your mistakes, ultimately they will make you a better driver

I feel like I could have written this myself! I failed my first practical test at the end of October and I was so upset I had tears in my eyes on the way back to the test centre on my test as I knew I had failed and I started full on crying as soon as he said I had failed 🥲 I got home and said to my partner I didn’t want to do it anymore as I couldn’t be bothered spending any more money and time but a month later I feel a lot better about it. I even looked at selling my car 😂 I think you just have to take it as a learning experience and you know what to expect for next time now. I re booked for April too but I found a cancellation and have one for next week so they do come up - I recommend ‘testi’. Also I do think you have to be lucky with the examiner some are definitely more harsh than others!

It’s awful isn’t it! I have also spent a ridiculous amount of money on it as I was practicing every night and driving home from work ect so the petrol costs hit me hard 😂 trust me the Thursday night I was on we buy any car 🤣🤣 but thank you this has made me feel better, it really is so disheartening especially looking back wishing you could do it again.

I will have a look at testi, do you just check it as much as you can and hope a date comes up or does it give you a notification?

This is so similar to my experience

- 4 attempts (passed on 4th go)
- sooo much money spent on lessons
- sooo much time spent in lessons
- sooo much effort / stress
- awful awful examiners sighing and not communicating directions/instructions correctly (I honestly don’t know how they get away with this it’s awful 😡)
- tears after every fail
- wanting to give up
- countless months trying to find a new test

what I will say is don’t give up!!! You will get it eventually

by the end I was on every cancellation app available- I found testi the best but you need to check it constantly

Yes the time and money I spent on lessons was hard to stomach as well 😞
No-one tells you how much mental anguish failing a driving test can cause 😅

Congrats on passing though 💗 I really don’t know how they get away with it either, I was so confident and feeling quite positive (had about 6 drops of rescue remedy maybe that’s to blame 😂) but as an already anxious person I was really hoping for someone nice, or atleast just sit there and don’t speak unless you are telling me where to go.

Honestly try not to think about the number of lessons/ time it takes to pass, and just keep focussing on passing. I must have spent thousands on lessons (honestly I can't even think about it, I had a years worth as a teenager and 3 tests, I then did a few months of auto lessons in my 30s which were a total waste of time and money, and then another 4 months of lessons in my 40s and 3 more tests, the last of which I passed) and it's all worth it now because I can drive.

And frankly if I can pass, anyone can! The cost is only a waste if you don't persevere.

I'd definitely advocate starting as soon as you can, I was 44 when I finally passed and my only regret is I didn't do it sooner, my life was bloody hard over the years not driving and having to drag 2 kids round everywhere on public transport. The convenience of driving/having a car shouldn't be underestimated!

It gives you notifications I think it’s about £10 but you have it until you pass your test 😊 Glad it’s made you feel a bit better, fingers crossed a cancellation pops up for you soon!

It's true what they say—you don't learn to drive until after you've gotten your licence and are out on your own. Although that day is terrible, things get better after that.

Passing the test, which constitutes this section, only requires simple awareness and muscle memory. Everyone experiences it, however for some people it takes a little longer. In either case, you can manage it. Just keep in mind not to lose it the first time you (inevitably) stall the vehicle at a stoplight, and always check your mirrors before you begin to move.
