I'll be honest; I love this story. We've all come across fantasists like him and hoped the day would come when their tangled web of lies comes crashing down.

It always has to be them being a homeless, autistic, sex worker, victim of abuse of all varieties on multiple occasions, sufferer of several heart attacks, tumours, strokes, multiple chronic illnesses, broken bones, neurological disorders, robbed of opportunities despite being uniquely and exceptionally gifted, subject to relentless and unparalleled abuse and/or applause, victims of implausible and unverifiable gunmen and threats and kidnapping and murder plots and able to elevenerife the most extraordinary claims with a ready list of personal qualities or protected characteristics that elevate them above criticism.

At this point it doesn't bother me so much that demented, pathological, narcissistic cluster-B, nest-feathering crackpots exist, it's how keen every dumb fucker on earth is to believe and celebrate them. Willfully bleeping stupid.

I really think these people forget about all the lies they've told, maybe even start to believe the lies themselves. Then they get so elevated that everyone underneath them just become plebs that nobody would listen to. I'm sure there were lots of 'plebs' who tried to out him before now but were ignored because they are nobodies.

Also, I imagine there are lots of other people like him in those circles. So nobody wants to call out the bull when their own closet is full of skeletons.

See, the school mate reminds of people I grew up with and still live near. Working on the idea he's genuine, which it feels like he is, he'd probably be happier if Arday wasn't lying and did achieve everything legitimately rather than laugh at the lies.

I’ve been wondering this too. I do have a fair helping of imposter syndrome, which is partly why I’m so fascinated by this whole thing. Even though I worked towards all my qualifications and career milestones totally legitimately I still feel like I’m winging it and that one day I’ll get called out as a fraud.

So if you are indeed a complete fraud and a total faker, how are you not a nervous wreck waiting for the Scooby Doo style unmasking every minute of every day?

I had seen those photos in Piccadilly circus before but I hadn't realised they were from the end of the marathons.

Just thinking about the timing, if that was 2010 . Hes said that by the time he was finishing university he'd only been reading for 3 years and had the same level as his daughter who was 3 then she would have been born when he was 18/19 so in 2003/4 so if he was to be believed then he would be working all hours and still off running all day with a small child at home. Also wouldn't his trip to install water pumps have been when his child was really really young

Some of the wilder claims made by Jason Arday, such as running 30 marathons in 35 days and separately raising more than £5.5 million for charity, were watered down by his publisher long before the scandal broke.
The publishing company Simon & Schuster removed biographical references about Arday’s alleged athletic feats and his fundraising accomplishments from his author’s page on its website, according to archived web pages.
Simon & Schuster has insisted it will go ahead with the publication of the former University of Cambridge professor’s memoir despite the ongoing furore. It is due to come out on August 27.

Between May 19 and July 25 last year, the claim that Arday had run “30 marathons in 35 days, 300 miles in three days and 600 miles in six days” was erased from his author’s page on the company’s website, as was a reference to the scholar raising “over £5.5 million pounds for 80 national charities over a 20-year period.”

Instead, this segment of Arday’s biography was changed to say he had “raised millions of pounds for charity”. The edits suggest the publisher may have been aware of inconsistencies in Arday’s life story before suspicions were publicly raised about the veracity of his achievements in recent weeks.

Several university academics have called for an independent inquiry into how Arday, a sociology of education professor, was appointed. He resigned from his position last week, saying “the personal cost” of media scrutiny had become “too great” and that he no longer wished to live “under a constant spotlight”.
The Sunday Times can reveal that several Cambridge academics appear to have since withdrawn their support for Arday, having signed a petition that accused the media of “trying to smear him with fake accusations of plagiarism”.
Sonita Alleyne, the first woman to lead Jesus College, where Arday worked, Sir Simon Philip Baron-Cohen, a professor of developmental psychopathology at Cambridge, and Ricardo Sabates Aysa, a professor of education and international development, have all had their names removed from a “solidarity letter” launched by the Good Law Project, which has provided the scholar with support, archived web pages show.

30 marathons in 35 days has at least been done once or twice. 300 miles in 3 days is probably just about possible if you were a professional ultrarunner and focused on it as a goal. 600 miles in 6 days isn't happening.

His confabulation just got worse and worse. I wonder if he genuinely believed he had actually achieved any of his claims? I worked with a girl who claimed to have been a catwalk model for Dior in Paris, but when it came to inviting her to join us in a girls holiday to Ibiza, she said she didn’t have a passport and had no idea how to get one. Quite how she managed to fly out to Paris several times a year was a mystery and she couldn’t explain it. She lied about a lot of stuff and I think she had low self esteem.

Yeah, I've worked with a couple of people like that over the years. Complete fantasists. The difference is that somehow some people actually get people to believe them instead of just nodding along and going "yeah, okay" in a trying-not-to-sound-too-sarcastic way.
