He questioned his claims on a news interview
This is ridiculous, but also who would put "gorgeous " before talented? In a description of an academic?
It's sad.
But it doesn't matter if JA was "gorgeous", what mattered was his behaviour. And as has been said many times on this thread, he lied, possibly manipulated, took opportunities from other people and gave false hope to those who found comfort in his "stories".
It's not racist to call out David Burke for the murder and abuse of Celeste. Nor should he be let off for his crimes because he's "gorgeous".
It's not racist for Axel whatshisface to be in prison for his crimes.
And before someone jumps on me, I know what JA has done isn't anywhere near as awful but my point is, it's not racist to question questionable behaviour and to expect someone to be accountable for their actions. You can't just excuse behaviour because of someones race (or disability, or any other protected characteristic..).
This person is writing like JA was murdered. Like he had no choice in his death. But he did. And this is what he chose to do. Nobody forced him.
If this is a genuine professor and OBE, it's easy to see how he got away with it for so long.
Couldn’t agree more with your take on this. What has happened is tragic and very sad for his family, particularly his children. Not one of the people commenting or reporting on him would have wanted this dreadful outcome. But he wasn’t murdered and chose to end his life.
My opinion is that it was a final act of control, he was clearly narcissistic and could not admit defeat. Dying by s***ide is his way of blaming other people for his death, in a “you made me do this” sort of way.
I’m really annoyed to see racism being banded about when public figures are discussing his death. He didn’t die because of racism. He died because of the lies he told and the way he handled the situation. Those lies got him all the way to a position as a professor at Cambridge, who were keen to promote his appointment as the “youngest black professor ever”. That’s what made this newsworthy, compared to other people who have fraudulently secured elevated professional/academic positions. But it is also a label he gladly accepted, happy to use race as an issue when it benefitted him and the fame/notoriety that came with it. Don’t forget he was publishing a book.
So if, in that position as the “youngest black professor ever”, it later transpires that the credentials and qualifications and various other claims that got you there turned out to be a load of crap, then you have to expect widespread criticism for the lies you told that led to you accepting that news-worthy appointment. That, in my view, is where the race issue comes in. It’s not simply because he was black, which is how some people are trying to spin this (and I’m sure JA would if he were here today talking about someone else in the same position). Some people have told stories of him using race discrimination to his advantage by claiming that to challenge him was to be racist. It cannot be a get out of jail free card to allow you to lie and cheat your way to such a position with no accountability.
I am surprised the uni that awarded his doctorate did not act on the blatant plagiarism in his PHD. They should have. Cambridge should have done more to not only scrutinise his achievements and ability to fulfil the role, but also to support him when it all came crashing down, after they were so keen to have him as their black professor poster boy.
I don’t think he was bullied to death. I think he realised his career was over, there was no coming back from it and he couldn’t see a way out.
I think it’s entirely insane that anyone who questioned his web of fantasy is now being told off by an establishment that spent too long patting itself on the back for having a black man in such a prominent academic role and not questioning the trench-sized holes in his story.

Cambridge lot will be hoping this all takes a “Race” element, and thus throwing the public off their sorry tails!
OH LOOK RUPERT, the little people are blaming the media for being racists! Let’s all keep quiet and hope the story goes away and we don’t have to explain how tit we were in all this.. letting a wholly under qualified liar into the academia l..

Twitter is alight with everyone calling everyone a racists haha utterly bypassing that JA was a liar and fantasist .. he died through shame ..
We must not avoid asking questions for fear someone will harm themselves!!

There was a similar reaction last year when the (white, middle class) Salt Path author and her husband were found to have grossly exaggerated their story (including his terminal illness diagnosis) and omitted some very dodgy business dealings.
Jason Arday must not become a warning against questioning dishonesty (though I fear the same people who bleated ‘be kind’ in the wake of Caroline Flack are already warming up their vocal chords…)

Right on cue his years of lies are being swept under the carpet and Cambridge will lie and say they supported him mental health wise because he's now not here to confirm or deny.
The public and press being blamed yet again and he's being hailed as some talented martyr when he was not!

In fact much of this entire story isn't about his race, ethnicity or parents' country of origin. He lied. Again and again and again. There were no halls hallowed enough where he didn't.
Sorry to bring my own background into disrepute again but my stepfather was still my main abuser and I will have questions about how much control and availability he had to abuse a child for the rest of my days.

It's like 1984. One day we are told to love this and that and the next day hate it and then the next day bow before it etc. The public, us, get the blame for everything the establishment does wrong. Critical thinking? Punishment for you! Calling out lies? Punishment for you.
I am sick of the race card being used as a top trumps card to deflect fraud and lies.
MLK once said he looked forward to a day when people would be judged not by the color of their skin, but the content of their character.
If only we could get there. See past race/religion/gender identity/sexuality/all of it, to whether a person fits the criteria that people should actually be judged upon - are they kind, honest people of integrity? Because that's all that matters.
It's a shame this man's lies brought him to this place. It's a shame all this is going to be muddied by bad faith arguments all over the news media and the internet. And I thank you all very much for tattle, and the actual discussion it allows. Because it's a rare thing these days.
All these people who indulged him and let him get into a position based on his pathological lying and fantasy just because they wanted to appear virtuous are now trying to absolve themselves of any blame for his death at all. Despicable. I'm not surprised the good law project making yet another poor decision.
Caroline Flack’s mum always refers to her as a young girl as well and she was 40. I’m almost 40 and wouldn’t refer to myself as young! I’m not old by any means, but my workmates in their late teens and early twenties look on me as their office mum
They would also see through my bull if I started telling fantastic stories about my incredible life and tell me to sober up or sod off. I wonder if people in Jason’s social circle were too in awe of him to tell him to stop being daft? Or did they believe him?
