I think there’s a distinction worth making between criticizing extremism and “shutting people down.” Calling out genuinely intolerant or hateful behaviour isn’t itself intolerance, regardless of whether it comes from the left or the right.
But I also think it’s counterproductive to pretend that one side has a monopoly on extremism. There are legitimate concerns about ideological intolerance across the political spectrum, and we should be able to discuss them without automatically turning the conversation into “the real threat is them.” That kind of blanket framing is itself part of the polarization.
The travelling across London to the airport (City, I assume) in the middle of the night alone doesn’t add up. No tubes - so what? Nightbus? Which are slow and unpredictable. Taxis would work, but expensive - unless the university was covering his travel expenses.
But I think any employer would raise their eyebrows anyway at covering several return flights a week at peak time when a local hotel for a couple of nights would be cheaper and (more importantly) give you more time in the town to actually do your job.
I'm a rather vicious leftist myself, when it comes to a lot of things. But I'm generally very against backing liars, cons, and cheats. It does make voting into something on a minefield, I must admit. Politicians are skeezy ducks generally.
