Thought I'd change my profile picture to see how I'd look wearing a sombrero. Anyone think I should buy one?

I could get Jack to embroider it with "I'm a literal food expert" on the front.

The embroidery thing is cracking me up. I sew, knit, and make beaded jewellery. In fact, I make the vast majority of my clothes. Every time I put a picture up of something I've made, some well-meaning person will say, "Ooh lovely, will you make me one?" or something similar.

Normally I say "haha no, but here's a link to the pattern!" If they persist, I point out how ridiculously expensive my services would be. Occasionally I rant in private to a friend about how so many people think I should monetise my leisure time.

The other thing is...I'm pretty good, but I'm not a professional. I mean, I'm better at sewing than Jack is at embroidery! When I sew, I can fit my own body well, but I've never had to learn to adjust for someone who's tall or long-waisted or broad-shouldered etc. I'm also lazy at times, and I won't redo something that's a bit crooked or whatever because I'm the one who'll be wearing it. So I can't make things to a professional standard, but if I did lose my mind and decide to take commissions, I would nevertheless have to charge a very high amount due to the cost of raw materials and my time.

Every other crafter I know gets SO pissed off at being offered commissions, told to go pro, etc etc. It's one of the most common annoyances that we talk about - in fact, I was literally discussing this yesterday with a friend who does pottery as a hobby. It's something we all hate.

...so OF COURSE the one person who goes "yes my work is great and I should monetise it" is Jack fucking Monroe. Of course it is.

I think this is only the second time in 187 threads that someone has come on to defend Jack, right? The other being the infamous taxi driver...

If you go back to thread 1 there are several people applying the "my enemy's enemy is my friend" logic of "Jack led to Katie Hopkins' downfall so I like her" which is a bit shortsighted; Katie Hopkins led to her own downfall.

I actually love this Jack Defender because they are EXACTLY what I think of as the archetypal squiggle: a middle class person who wouldn't make Jack's recipes personally, but thinks they're a great helping hand for the armies of feckless dole pizza scoffers.

Good morning to all you lovely people.

Well, what can I say about Max? Rarely have I met someone so gullible in the face of all the facts and evidence gathered in one place.

How many people in receipt of foodbank parcels can afford to go on a camping holiday? Pitch fees cost money, as does the tent and equipment, let alone afford a caravan.

People camping or caravanning do not lose their ability to cook because they are on holiday. There are plenty of existing one pot recipes suitable for cooking in a caravan or tent that are simple and tasty.

As for the completely unnecessary comment about poor people eating pizza and frozen chips, you are no better than Katie Hopkins who you rightly despise. You denigrate those in poverty with a right wing sneer about eating convenience foods, while no doubt personally enjoying pizza and chips yourself on occasion.

Finally, I can assure you that I followed Jack's recipes to the letter, and the ones I tried are horrible. The tomato soup in particular makes me heave at the thought of it, it was truly disgusting. 🤢🤮

I'd not say that. A lot of people new to camping can't cook so a good book like hers is a great starting point for eating well when camping or in a caravan for that matter.

Her book Cooking on a Bootstrap is a good start for people on a tight budget and lets be honest there enough people struggling with money these days and it shows there's more to life than frozen pizza and chips.
I never thought I’d get a chance to say this here but... maybe you could go to the “Rave About” section and start a Jack Monroe thread there?

I don't drive a taxi, I'm a hydraulics specialist on off shore platforms which means that although I'm a very good cook I can also afford to dine out (covid allowing) in rather good eateries. I just thought her books were good for people on a budget and with limited cooking skills. I do encourage people to learn to cook with fresh ingredients and move on from take aways and other junk food, preparing a good meal is a great experience.

I'm not a fan of hers but can't find a logical reason the dislike her either.

Kippers and poached eggs for breakfast and I'm making challah bread :)
If you can’t find a logical reason to dislike them it’s perhaps unwise to pop up on their one hundred and eighty seventh thread to defend them without looking into why we do.

Enjoy your breakfast. The pizza and the chips are in the oven for me and my brood.

That’s fair enough - can I ask if you’ve ever tried any of her recipes? And enjoyed them? Do you follow her on Twitter? That’s good for you if you’re a good cook and can afford fine dining, but so many people who buy her books are led to believe they’re buying a book filled with workable recipes.

Please feel free to read the Wiki section for her and you can see why there are this number of threads about her. I don’t think any regular posters on the thread dislike her just for the sake of disliking her. There’s plenty of budget cooks / cooks that promote budget cooking and recipes that are healthy, filling and don’t break the bank ... and they don’t mislead about being of limited means while living a privileged life, they don’t use every ailment known to excuse poor manners in social media, and they can actually cook.

Hello and welcome to thread 187. Please excuse my mincing of your oath for the thread title, @SweetTransvestite but it is considered TOO RUDE for Tattle (and thank you for nominating the words @ChocolateMuffin). Your prize is a six-pack of #gifted Yakult.

In the previous thread:
-Jack continued to leave us breadcrumbs about where she is and what she's doing and we still don't care
-she disappeared from social media again only to reappear less than twelve hours later with renewed vigour
-she (allegedly) did some embroidery on a denim shirt so brace yourselves for Embroidery Jack who is already taking commissions that I'm sure will definitely come to fruition and not wither and die on @kachoochoo's to-do list vine

Please use the words ‘thread title’ (two separate words) when making a bid for one as it makes it easier to search. Also, try to hold off to the latter part of the thread if possible (after post #500). And remember - no swears are allowed.

There is a thread in the off topic forum called Food and Drink where off topic chat is encouraged if / when Jack is quiet.

New to Jack? Have a look at the wiki.

The recipes work if you follow them. I only looked at them after my brother got the Tin Can book to find new recipe ideas for the Scout Troop he leads and many of the new ideas have gone down well and a real bonus is it was her who led to the demise of Katie Hopkins.

Might knock up a corned beef stew tomorrow, not eaten that in a long time.
Might you drive a taxi, perchance?
In all seriousness, good for you if you’re a genuine fan and think her cookbook belongs in the Michelin Hall of Fame, but you’ll find yourself in the minority in this thread, I’m afraid.
If you really are a fan, there is the Rave About section as suggested by the esteemed Sidey B.

I don't follow her on Twitter, only looked at her recipes which will work I think but certainly are a starting point for people with no cooking skills and certainly no worse than some of the food Jamie Oliver promotes (I ate at two of his outlets and the food was poor).

I'd not say she lives a privileged life though, she's no multi millionaire and I'd suggest her manner 'poor manners in social media' are of a higher standard than many who post on this thread.

If nothing else my original post gave her a few hours off from Tattle, shifted direct focus away LOL ;)

I'll leave you lot in peace now so keep safe and try and enjoy life :)
There is no try, there is only do.

Bye-bye. Thanks for educating us with your higher knowledge. It’s been emotional.

Wait, did I just read that Max has only looked at her recipes, not even tried them......

Hahaha, that's hilarious to think you know better than people here that actually have tried them.

'let me overrule your experience with my opinion based on something I read'. Classic.

I have had such a shit day. This morning I dismissed an employee, legally, and have since been dogged by 1 star Google reviews from him and his friends. Completely fake reviews and all defamatory. I’ve worked my backside off for 15yrs and the accusations could cost me my entire business. I’m so done.

Then I log in here and see Grifty McGrifterFace has added a tip jar to her Twitter. What the actual fuck?! I’m so angry that this is allowed to be honest. It seems so dangerous for those who are vulnerable and easily manipulated into giving away their winter fuel allowance, for example.
