I’ve you ever been sacked

Not me but lots of people will just state they had a career break and not put down that job at all.
If it was a long-term job or it related to fraud etc then that's a bit more tricky...
 
I have. It was when I was about 20 though so I went back to college then onto uni. I also had a child around that time so when I apply for jobs I explain the gap as caring for children. Not sure if I am wrong but your previous company can’t tell potential new employers you were sacked can they?

They can but most won't, they'll just give the bare minimum information, yes the person worked here between those dates.

I was asked to leave from a girls clothing boutique.
I was about 17 years old, at college just needed a Saturday job.
the boutique was the rage, designer clothes shoes jewellery etc for older teens. I was a ‘normal ‘ kid would never have had the money to shop there. Anyway I worked for a few week & it was ok, nothing special. The girls where fake/witchy/mean girl types. I’d ignored it for along time then one day I got asked to work upstairs. The cashier was asking me lots of witchy questions, what I thought of x, did I like x & I said I’m not that fussed but I’ve never been part of such a witchy workplace.

I then went downstairs & the manager passed me my cost & said ‘we’ll see you then’

the cashier had taken the phone of the hook & was trying to catch me out so the manager could hear. I cried all the way to the bus stop !

Got sacked from my first job. Was 16 at the time but it was mega shady, cash in hand sort of thing so I could get away with not putting it on my cv.

As stated above most companies won’t say why you were sacked unless it was something that would put others in harms way I believe (but then they’d find that out with the criminal record check). I mean there was one woman I worked with that got caught stealing money from customers and she ended up getting another retail job in a different shopping centre in my city so they clearly were none the wiser 😂

Honestly, getting let go at work is a tricky area but it definitely happens more than we think about.

Ultimately, the way you’ll go about the situation really does depend on what had taken place at the workplace though so it’s hard to really advise one specific way.

A very similar thing happened to my sister.
I think if this happened to my daughter I would go in and show them all up.
 
I had a horrible experience in an office job a few years back. Technically I wasn’t sacked as they were clever about it. I was on a 2 year fixed term contract, 18 months in. Fairly big office and a few managers decided they didn’t like me (genuinely think it was because I was very popular). I’d been told my fixed term contract was going to be made permanent by my manager (who did like me). Then a few months later that went to pot and they decided they would make my position permanent but that I had to apply for it and interview for it.

These managers who hated me made it clear on many occasions and tried to get me into triouble and told lies about me, and these were women in their late 50s. Anyway, besides being great at my job, I didn’t get the role. They did however offer me a position under one of the managers who hated me but I would be under review. I don’t know how much of it was legal at all (a lot of weird stuff went on). But I resigned that day and refused to work my notice. I wanted to leave them in the tit as we were so short staffed at that time.

I found out from my friend who still worked there that they were never going to give me the job (obvious really) and my manager was pleading with them to keep me. I’d literally done nothing wrong to these witches!!!!

I applied for another job in the same company but a different department and they refused to do a reference for me but I spoke with HR directly and was lucky that they still offered me the job with my other references I provided. When I started the new job, I popped over to my old office to pick up some stuff that I had left. Next day my new manager calls me in to a meeting. The managers from my other office had complained that I had visited, telling my manager I was banned from that office and that I spent a “considerable amount of time” in the office distracting my friend from working - I was literally in there for 5 minutes. So even when I’d left and moved on they were still trying to duck my career up.

Like Notworthy said most employers just provide the most basic information in references these days. I‘ve issued them for former staff at 4 different workplaces and every one has had a standard reference letter, which has been the blandest thing you’ll ever read.

As a result my current employer doesn’t bother requesting them for new starters anymore. We issue our own bland template for any reference requests we receive though 😁. It’s along these lines:

Dear Miss Nosey Parker,

Thank you for your recent reference request for Joan O’ Arc.

It is our policy to only provide basic information and therefore I can confirm Joan was employed between 30 January 1999 and 29th March 2021. Joan’s last role was an Area Manager.

Yours Sincerely,

I’d recommend putting the last employer down as a referee to see what happens. In the rare event they refuse to provide a reference or they return one but it causes problems, the next time you apply for a job don’t list them as a former employer and say you took a career break. You can offer to provide the details of a friend who is happy to provide a personal reference for the time if they need a reference to cover the period you took said career break.

Never been sacked, but have left on bad terms. Have just put the people that I got on well with as references and it’s never been a problem. I’ve had good jobs etc and have a good job now

I guess I’m just saying risk it: some will check your references and some won’t

My friend was sacked as she didn’t get on with another head of department. She just puts her contract ended. Previous employers are not allowed to give bad references or say anything that you could take action against them for. They have to be careful what they say.

I technically got fired from a job for refusing to undertake one of my assigned roles when the company did not provide me with functioning PPE (it was all broken and therefore useless) and thus leading a minirevolution where the entire team refused to do the role (rightfully so). We were a team of 18-21 year olds and I was so proud of them all for standing up to management because it was just not on.

To be slightly vague about it, we were required to wear waders for some tasks. Except they bought cheap ones that were only made to last two hours per week usage, not 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. Plus we had 3 pairs to share between 20 of us which is just gross in itself. Anyway, they broke mega easily and leaked which left you with soaking wet feet. Having wet feet for an entire shift is not pleasant. Having wet feet for an entire shift when I have diabetes and need to take care of my feet as I risk having them amputated if any sort of infections start is unacceptable. They knew this and still fired me.

Anyway, I appealed it because the contract I signed said that they would provide the PPE and they had reports from me asking for the items to be replaced continuously because they had been broken, i won, then handed in my notice immediately afterwards because duck working for a company like that. It was all very quietly swept under the rug but glad I took the fall for that because I had good grounds and know a lot about my rights.

In all honesty, I should have sued them for unfair dismissal. It was a breach of contract and put me at serious risk of harm. Wish I did, i’d probably have had a pretty big payout given the company size. I don’t ask that manager for references because god knows what they’d write, they hated me, but I did ask a previous Team Leader for one as we had a good relationship and are still friends to this day.

I think I've been sacked in a nice way lol . They told me they were 'letting me go as they didn't see me progressing ' . To be fair , the job wasn't for me and I was trying to leave anyway, and I was only 19 and lived at home. They said they would provide a good reference and didn't want to end on bad terms . I claimed jobseeker's for a short while after.

I've been made redundant, too and that company no longer exists.

Both these jobs have a brief line on my cv

That’s not on. The amount of times I hear stuff like this I don’t know how companies get away with it

I hope your rise in the company is stratospheric and you end up in a position where you can either sack these vile people or make their working lives extremely uncomfortable ! 💖💖

I've moved to a rival company now where I'm treated SO much better!!! Thank you ❤ They were absolute vultures and after it all happened, if they ever walked past me in the street or in town, they wouldn't even give me eye contact - cowards!!!

Not fired as such but I walked out of a job over bullying by the boss. He was awful. When I think back to how he treated people. Anyway at my next interview when I was asked about the gap in my CV. I explained I had been working, but the company refused to give me a reference. I said it was a toxic environment and the boss was a bully and I had walked out. I said if that behavior was common practice then I wasnt suitable for the new role. I was hired later that day. Months later I was told by one of the MD's that my stance and pride is sticking up for myself had basically got me my new job.
I never see the point in hiding the truth, the world is really a small place when it comes to business

I don't really know if you'd call it sacked as such, maybe more just didn't pass probation? They basically said "we don't think you're the right fit for the job, you'll be leaving now" at my probation review meeting. It was my first ever job (excluding a Saturday job I'd had working for my Aunt) and I was devastated. I felt such a failure. I remember 17 year old me just sitting there in the office sobbing my heart out, I kept apologising to the HR lady. I hadn't even really done anything wrong but I felt like I had to apologise for "not being the right fit", it's so silly that I felt that way now I look back on it as I didn't even really enjoy the job :ROFLMAO: I felt like a criminal though! They wouldn't let me back into the office to gather my belongings, my manager went and got all my bits and escorted me off the premises!

It wasn't all bad though as I left there at 3pm on the Friday and by the following Tuesday I was in training for a new job!

I got let go from a job after only two weeks for having a panic attack and it was humiliating. Of course they didn't say it was because I had a panic attack, they said I hadn't passed my probation as it wasn't a 'cultural fit'. I knew, they knew... it was because of my anxiety. One of their assistants admitted this after she left the company. It was my first non-contractor role after finishing college, it was first full-time gig and being let go destroyed me and my mental health.

My line of work in quite tricky to get into without prior experience and I went to about 12 different interviews over the period of 8 months. Some of these interviews were gruelling, and would involve a test/presentation stage and in some of them, I made it to the very last hurdle only to be told 'no' after 6 weeks of interviewing panels etc. Finally, I found a company that took a chance on me and I've never looked back. I've been with them for nearly 2 years now and I'm currently the head of my department. The best part is, I do not get any bad treatment due to my mental health conditions. My boss and our management team have researched anxiety and panic attacks and know exactly what to do when I have one or don't feel well. I've taken sick leave when I needed it due to depression, with my boss' full support.

If anyone finds themselves in a similar position to me, please don't lose hope and keep fighting. It's a lot easier said than done (there were days where I couldn't face getting out of bed to go collect my social welfare payments), but just keep at it.

Side note: The company that fired me is now mostly dissolved due to poor management. It was a relatively small firm, but most of the staff members left due to bullying and better opportunities elsewhere. They still have a virtual address, but no work.

I’ve not been sacked but worked for two companies in a row where I left on bad terms and didn’t think they’d give me a good reference (context: I was poached by the second company and the first outsourced my job to them so I did the exact same job for twice the money) but also the line managers I had didn’t understand anything about what my job was or the skill needed. Instead of putting my line manager I put two people that were respectable colleagues that could actually talk about the skills I had and no one has ever questioned whether or not they were my managers or their status within the company.
