needed to hear this today!! We’ve started our Easter hol from today! Just couldn’t get the motivation today so snuggles and films on sofa it is!

Honestly my mum gave me sick days when I was little whenever I asked, did me no harm. This is a global issue, snuggle them hard we’ll be back to juggling school runs, work, appraisals and traffic jams in no time. Enjoy it amongst the global chaos x

Oh thank heavens. I came here contemplating writing an essay on the Covid support thread because today my anxieties have been through the roof. I'm not sleeping well and when I do I'm dreaming about food shortages and fucking home schooling.

I have worked in schools, spent years at a special needs residential school but teaching my own kids in my own home seems impossible right now.

Well meaning do-gooders keep adding me to FB groups so that I can check in daily to see all the smug pricks and their lesson ideas. Honestly, it's exhausting. I will set work for my kids and I will ensure that they don't regress during this time off but, fgs, how do they expect to maintain this daily grind for what could be months? So far my kids have mastered Minecraft and will shortly be graduating in YouTube Joke*

I will order some age appropriate workbooks this week. I've printed off worksheets and I'm trying not to beat myself up when the kids end up back on the iPad instead of reading a book. I wish people could just admit that this isn't easy and also consider the effect this will have on the children. Sorry for the rant. It's been simmering all week

I very nearly vented on the support thread last night. I couldn't find it though, even in the search bar. Instead I ended up being a bit scathing about someone's friend on the general Convid thread. Spent all morning feeling bad about it though.

I'm back to scathing and irritable tonight though. Maybe it's a new pattern.

I try to encourage mine to get dressed every day, just not in uniform lol. Home clothes are much more comfortable anyway. A lot of countries don’t even have a school uniform.

Mine have been wearing all of the new clothes that they should have been wearing in Spain during the Easter holidays The new swimming costumes are now gym leotards and everyday is summer dress day

Im taking it all very easy. My son completes his work independently then I check it over (hes 11) no schedules or anything like that. Ive had family members getting so stressed out about having to teach their children. No one is expecting parents to teach their children. The work set should be work that they have already worked on and can complete. I personally would ensure children are keeping up with reading everyday ask questions to check comprehension and basic maths skills.

The work I have set my students is mostly comprehension work.

Wow. I salute you. My email would have pinged so fast they wouldn't know what hit them We had a sweet email from my 2 youngest's school that made me quite emotional. Basically, no pressure and stay safe. My eldest logs into a hub and completes a certain amount a day. She's at Grammar and fairly sensible. It takes her an entire day to complete most of it as she pisses around messaging her mates or staring into space but I'm not going to force any of them. This is home, not school. They will learn every day just from the interaction we share. From baking cakes, playing games, watching tv. I refuse to turn my house in to a classroom. Plus, it's the Easter holidays now anyway

We couldn't be any more behind, even if we had voluntarily not even bothered.
I need to scream into something first, so I'm nice to the underpaid, otherwise lovely people.

My 11 year old's school have sent for the week just gone:
24 maths workbooks with 120 questions/problems each. (Left the pissing protractor at school. Lets go unnecessarily round Wilko shall we? That's a no.)
5 science tasks including making a boomerang, (it fell on the floor and the dog licked it. Uploaded it anyway post licking. Soz, no re-do)
4 geography tasks, 2 RE, a PE schedule. (Fuck off, we've got a trampoline and Just Dance)
A request to build a prototype of a product to make a developing country safer. I think that's still Geography? (Our country might be a start at the moment mate. )
4 Recipes to cook for home ec involving copious amounts of flour and pasta (WHERE? Have you walked round Tesco with your eyes painted on?)
6 English workbooks. Including analysing Shakespeare.
1 Drama project on Comedy. (I'm not feeling my inner Sarah Millican right now)
4 Art Projects.
Some DT shit that I can't understand (wtf, I am not giving this kid a saw. This is a child who was sent home from Y3 and Y4 three times for trapping their hand in the toilet door and requiring a check of just how mangled the tendons were. There will be NO SAW)
There are warnings attached about how they will be tested on return to school on all subjects and sanctioned if the correct efforts aren't made.
I have to work from home. I have to. It's not optional.
The child in question is dyscalculic and dyslexic.
I have sat on my self so as not to email something unbecoming because we all know the teachers have sweet FA to do with it, it's an academy so it's pressure from above.
These kids are 11 FFS and I am not a qualified teacher.

Gosh and that’s just for the week? Seems a lot, I’d honestly feel overwhelmed and slightly annoyed that they would be facing repercussions upon return for not completing it all.

Most schools I think have been brilliant. They’ve set a reasonable amount of ‘work’ but also said no pressure because this situation is so unusual. Even the kids who are still attending school aren’t doing usual schooling. Years seems to be mixed in some schools from what I gather and they’re not doing ‘proper’ work. Every child’s education has been put on hold at the moment they’re all in the same boat so there’s no need for such pressure from schools parents or anyone.

Yep!! Sick of seeing it. We have some worksheets and signed up to an online maths thing but I'm just going with what my daugther wants to do. She's only 5 so no stress, as long as sheds not just sat watching crap on YouTube all day I'm happy.

Yep have one of those in Facebook. Been ‘friends’ since infant school but drifted apart over the years.
her dc are much younger than mine and she’s usually a sahm so she has much more time than me who is still working two jobs so leaving the house daily and leaving my 14 and 18 at home to get on with school and college work while I go to work to mind children of key workers despite that not even being my job. (I work in school finance and exams) plus saturdays at a supermarket where we are busier than ever.

Anyone peeved at all the home schooling chronic flexers out there at the moment. The ones who’ve completed google classroom by 9am, written a journal by mid morning, baked a cake by noon, designed a poster for their window to motivate their community by mid afternoon and so on. My sons being looked after by you tube and Disney+ whilst myself and husband are working at 150%, gotta keep the essential services going (we work in sex health and social housing) although let me tell you people are not happy that we can’t provide full services.... probably the same people who are flexing all over social media about the home Ed they’re doing with their kids...... also they’ve probably got spare rooms full of pasta and bog roll too #justsaying sorry I’m on a rant now. by the way I e got time to write this today because I’m technically on annual leave today, however leave during COVID means checking your emails 4 times an hour

Today I’ve seen people putting their kids in their uniform for ‘home school’. On the one hand I might help some kids focus and fair enough, on the other hand it’s a load of nonsense.

Just creates more washing in my eyes. We do get dressed before starting work but wouldn't dream of putting a school uniform on her

Love it! (Not the loss of your holiday of course, we lost ours too!). I let mine wear what they want lol. Why not they’re not going anywhere. Summer dresses when it’s windy and rainy out? Why not! If they wanted to wear uniform they could if they wanted but I doubt they will

I have two at high school and one Yr 4. Today the older two (girl and boy) got on and done what they needed to do but youngest done a bit in the morning then helped me in the garden. It's like a competition for some parents!!! Would love to see the behind the scenes of the lovely pictures and videos. I can help my kids get through this but Iam no teacher and won't pretend to be better than my kids teacher's with university degrees, years of training and experience.

I am glad for the work that has been set by the school as it stops the prospect of a whole day where I have to come up with things to stop my kids sitting on each others heads, asking me what they can eat or just running through the house making high pitched screeching noises But here are some good tips I have learnt this week.

There is a video on YouTube for everything (I suppose I already knew that)
Times tables - YouTube, counting in French - YouTube, What's a noun - You Tube

Newsround - TV but educational
National Geographic channel on Disney+ - See above

Making treasure hunts for each other in the house = writing/reading/art
Playing shop keeper = maths
Emailing their friends = Writing

Video chat on FB messanger lets them wear filters and play little games with their friends and keeps them amused for long periods of time.

Lunch break can be longer than an hour !

I ordered maths link cubes. They arrived yesterday. I promised myself we'd have a maths day when they arrived. It's now 11am and I haven't seen my eldest yet and the other 2 are plugged in to Minecraft. Again. I live in a constant limbo. If I contemplate the possibility that this could be our reality for the next 3 months I stress about not being able to get my kids to learn anything at all. I'm expecting an email from the school on Friday to provide more guidance, until then, we will continue to do token amounts of 'work' and I will find something that might encourage my 5 year old to actually pick up a reading book. Either way, I know that the staged photo families swearing blind that they are sticking to a strict routine will eventually burn out and face rebellion. I'm happy to take the middle ground for now. I value my sanity too much for this

My friend every night at 6pm will upload about 30 pictures to FB with the caption "today at *** school" and list of everything they have done! It drives me mad!

I have a 7 and 5 year old, if they go back to school at the same level they were at when the schools closed, I'll be happy! If they go back and move up levels then ill be over the moon! We do school work from 9 till 11.30ish, have lunch that they help make then we chill in the afternoons. I'm very fortunate that I'm off work with them so can dedicate the time to them
