Just watching her new video and she's made another snide remark about her work at about the 9 minute mark. Dan came home from work got caught her watching YouTube videos and she jumps to her own defense... I'm sending a lot of insecurities about her career lately!

I find it interesting seeing her grapple with being this ‘feminist’ voice and suddenly loosing that along with her sex positivity channel, to being left stranded as a low earning freelancer in a traditional family setup.
I get the impression in a lot of her videos she has a gradual sense of discomfort and maybe even shame that she has ended up in a very traditional role of mother and wife (working part time, loss of her career, doing all the housework and bulk of the childcare) after having Rowan. And as she admits in the title of this video, he was the real reason she quit YouTube.

IMO her liberal feminist persona has always just been a cloak she put on because it suited the channel as opposed to actual feminist politics, hence how easily she has let it slide. I’ve watched a backlog of her videos recently and she keeps making awkward disclaimers like ‘’at the moment Dan and I have quite traditional roles’’ or ‘’it’s funny that our career trajectories have followed a normative and gendered pattern’’. Like.. yes Hannah.. this happened to you for the exact same reasons it happens to other women. It’s not by chance or coincidence and your obsession with sex toys and queer adjacent talking points didn’t save you from cultural structures women sufr under.

The term ‘’choice feminism’’ comes to mind - her liberal / superficial understanding of feminism is that women should be empowered to make whatever choices they want about career/lifestyle/kids etc. but the flip side of this is that she suddenly has this life she DIDN’T choose and is blaming herself ending up here.

sorry if this is heavy - just some thoughts prompted by seeing that video today - we can go back to talking about how weird her living room is lol

We've all given Dan a hard time on not pulling his weight with housework, but from the latest video, it sounds like he has taken on most of the financial burden of bills etc.

God, I can't even imagine how irritating he finds Hannah not having a real job and even downsizing what she was calling 'work'

That's such a thoughtful and interesting observation!

I think she had a lot of privileges she could have used to not end up in the direction you described. I 100% agree that as soon as children are involved, there is such a slim chance to keep an equal relationship and your career as a woman going. However, she is someone who loves to apply labels such as feminist (or expert lol) to herself without acting like a feminist, making feminist choices. This paired with the naivity of how stable youtube as a career would be led to her current situation. I think she could have had everything, if she had acted smarter and hadn't thought she wouldn't end up like other women. That made her maternity life overexplanation videos soooo annoying: I already wondered how this might even work regarding her still earning money but she reaaally thought she would be this feminist icon who brings maternity leave to youtube. While complaining about lack of government support. Guess what? That's a struggle for every single freelancer like her. She just didn't know, while pretending to be an expert on everything, as usual.

(And let's be real: Her sex talk was always so basic and vanilla that it worked really well together with patriarchic views on female creators, and especially her having one night stands and big bits).

I’m just always surprised how shes convinced she has to be a part-time creator. She literally chooses her own hours and can bring her child to work with her if necessary.

I remember a friend of mine saying she found it annoying in her video about Rowan where she was trying to stop herself saying that he had given her life purpose or something. My friend was like you can be a feminist and still say stuff like that..

Or if she's done with content creation (which she seems to be given how bland and recycled all her current videos are) she could go and get a different job - and I don't mean her "management" side business that clearly isn't taking off. Plenty of part time jobs out there, or full time jobs with paid mat leave if that's a big issue

I cannot imagine how rough it’ll be if they do have another baby in that tiny flat. Rowan’s bedroom isn’t big enough for a second bed, it’d have to be bunks if they haven’t moved by the time a new baby is out of the master bedroom.

Plus there isn’t even room to swing a cat in the kitchen / living room. I don’t know how they do it, but I don’t live in a city like London, so having small kids in a flat is hard to imagine as doable.

I thought she was complaining about losing her identity and not having a career purpose, not doing well on youtube, her flat being too small, not doing well financially, and her relationship doesn't look great from what she shares. Does she think another baby will fix all this? Like what's the mentality?

She's complaining about the period tracker app she uses showing her a yearly Wrapped. If you're trying to conceive and know you'll get upset... don't look at it then? How are they meant to know your reactions?

Another baby will make everything infinitely worse. I think she’s severely underestimating how big the jump from one child to two is, particularly in a small flat, with a checked-out spouse and no access to maternity leave.

Her income has declined significantly, so the pressure will be on Dan to be the sole financial provider. And I very much doubt she’ll be interested in dropping childcare to stay at home full time with two small kids - she likes her daytime cinema trips, restaurant lunches, massages and tennis lessons too much!

I chuckle at how at odds it all is with her feminist facade.
