How are you only using roughly 2.5kwh a day? I also live alone in a two bed flat and I use about 7.5kwh a day and there’s no way I could get that down.

I don’t have the heating on, turn everything off at the plug when not using, only turn my hot water tank on for one hour in the morning, and hardly cook meals, mostly have salads. Still 7.5kwh a day?
do you work from home? I am out most of the day for work, I cook myself one meal in the evening and hardly watch telly, will only have one light on in the room im in. I also charge my phone and laptop at work during my working day which also helps slightly

I’ve not posted on this thread before but found it very eye opening.
I’m a family of 3 in a 3 bed semi new build. Our bill went from 104 to 181 with eon. (Moved to a variable tariff as the cheapest fixed rate was 224, my financial advisor told us to do this)
we’ve tried to be more careful since the increase and in the run up, not leaving lights on, we’ve not had the heating on once since March. I’ve got a 1 year old so always said if it was cold I would put it on but even at night his bedroom is about 19/20 degrees which is fine. We do a lot of washing, and we do have a tumbledryer on quite a bit 🙈🙈 but I do hang it all outside when I can but we just don’t have the room to have loads of washing drying all over the house!
ANYWAY, I had another email from eon yesterday saying do a meter reading so I thought why not, I’ll submit it. Then tonight I’ve gone on my account and it says I can change tarriffs so I just clicked on it and got quoted for another variable tarriff but this time only for 165 a month, not sure if it’s cause we’ve not used much or whatever but I’ve gone with that instead. Might be worth looking at if you’re with eon 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I know it’s only 16 quid but it all adds up!!

Just thought I'd update.
So I paid my £269 they insisted that it was going up to. After it being £90 before.
I got my statement today.
I am now £144 in credit after the months usage deductions. 🙃

So it has actually gone up to around £125 a month from £90.
Not up over 150% like they wanted to charge me.

Went online to 'change my monthly amount'
It says "We estimate you should be paying £272 to keep on track"
Sorry? What?

Octopus tried to do this to me (it wasn't a huge jump like this though!) But I just changed my dd to the same price. I'm budgeting more but putting it into my bank account not into Octopus. I don't want them to have my money sitting in their accounts

This is octopus energy too!

Going to call them and ask them to put it back down! 😑

I stayed with the same supplier the previous owners used and Carried on using the smart meter. After 2 years, I switched suppliers and the device stopped working. I was told by the new supplier they could remotely take over the old device/display. Anyway, that never happened and tbh I wasn’t that bothered about having it anyway. Eon have contacted me to tell me that I’m due a smart meter. It sounds like it’s more than just giving me a new display. They need to get to my meters. I’m just wondering if I can be arsed with the hassle. My electric meter is under my stairs and the washing machine is in front of it. I have to stick my hand through a gap and put my camera on a timer to take a photo of the meter to send my readings 😂 Do they change the whole meters?!

They do, yeah, they put a whole new box thing in as far as I'm aware.
They did for ours anyway.

I'm hoping someone might be able to help.
Me and my housemate moved into a property last year and we know we've been overpaying as last year, we were in credit by £800 lol and I've billed us upto date today and we're currently in credit by £300 lol We currently pay £100 and I've added all our gas + electricity charges from when we moved in 19 months ago to today, and it works our usage for gas + electricity is on average £72 per month.

Now that things are increasing again in January, I don't know where to stick or switch over to a fixed tariff. I'm on all compare the energy deals etc but it's so hard to know whether you're going to over or under for what you'll be using.

I'm okay at Maths and use a lot of excel spreadsheets and percentage calculator.net website to work things out but it's so overwhelming! Why do they not teach you this in school?!!!! duck learning about PIE (3.14 is all i remember about that!)

Anyway- help please

What tariff are you on now?

Even if you switch to a fixed tarriff, you can still adjust it if you're using too much or too little.
Sorry, what do you mean? So even if I was a fixed tariff, I'm being quoted a monthly estimated of £82, it may be less than this? But will it be less than £72 I use on average:? I hope that makes sense!

If you're estimated £82, it will be £82 a month on the fixed tarriff. But if for instance, you are only using £70 worth and still ending up in credit, you can lower your monthly direct debit to only be paying £70 a month if you want to

Ohhhh so it's similar to what I'm doing now then. I'm using roughly £73 but i pay about £100 per month to be on the safe side and I've ended up in £300 in credit lol

This is so hard ot know whether swapping is the best lol i basically want to pay the cheapest rates- whether that's fixed or not lol

Yeah, the fixed part just means they won't increase your unit prices.
You can still change your monthly payments if you are paying not enough or too much.

I changed to a Fixed and they estimated me £240 a month. Paid that for 2 months and cut it right down to £140 a month because we were in credit after only 2 months 😂

Octupus Energy. Just the normal priced capped one.
All the fixed tarrif means is the standing charge + price per unit won't change - however the amount you pay is based on your usage.
Pros of a fixed is you know what it will be and for how long - however if the price per unit + standing charge decrease you don't benefit from it.
On the flipside if it increases, you don't get hit with the increase.

Energy is difficult to try and always pay the cheapest as the price cap changes twice a year. I know some places offer a fixed tariff with the ability to leave without exit fees if you wanted to switch so maybe one of those would suit you?

Yeah I'll definitely look into that. I've just realised my calculations on how much I'm "Using" is currently what I pay on average with the cost how much it is. So I'm now back to the drawing board and looking at how much I use, how much it's increased since i moved in and then taking it from there! :)

Thanks everyone! xo

Okay yes so there are quite a few tariffs out there for under the price cap/predicted price cap. I’d recommend fixing for 1 year no longer. Octopus have a 1 year fixed with no exit fees, so if it ends up being more than the price cap (e.g if the price cap goes down later in 2025) you can switch back. But equally E.on have I think a better deal. I’ve just fixed after being on the price cap tariff and it’s worked out cheaper.

I've decided to switch :) With Octupus, there's a £0 early exit fee so I'm happy with that! Thanks everyone for their help!
