Fine in small doses. Won't be watching that channel he started with the rate my takeaway fella, I find him unwatchable.

The way he describes food is so tedious, “The hash brown is very crispy on the outside” Groundbreaking!

He’s like your annoying neighbor that wants to talk endlessly about cutting his grass twice a week becuase it rained. 🥱

Sorry. He’s a complete idiot.

Stumbled across this thread by coincidence but feel almost vindicated reading what you've all put!

I subscribed to him years ago and rarely watch now, but I did put on the recent 'abuse' video wondering what it was about. I was instantly skeptical of his stories. I have no reason to be skeptical of him and before this, was completely ambivalent to him as a YouTuber (if anything slightly positive).

But people don't just run up to strangers, even YouTubing ones, in public and begin antagonising them - particularly men (and he's not small). At a basic psychological level there is no 'win', and there's the risk of physical aggression in return. He isn't a controversial figure, he isn't known for being extravagantly rich or able to grant wishes Mr. Beast style - and he simply isn't well known enough that his face is instantly recognisable. I just don't believe these examples happened.

And seeing the comment that @SwiftieNewRomantics posted - he clearly has the tendency to over-exaggerate. 'Where is your evidence' is not something I would describe as 'the type of things he has to read and put up with' - it's a reasonable question.

What a pest this man is, swanning into a business that’s been open for a long time like he’s saving the day. How did they get so far in their lives before Gary rocked up with £500?

What did bringing this bootlicker on and returning so soon to do a victory lap over a paltry sum do exactly besides feeding his ego? Random YouTube man says Gary is busy saving small businesses? Why do they all speak without any thought?

It does seem like anyone can knock about with a camera, describe food as beautiful [insert texture, flavour, smell or appearance] and you’re off to the races.

Please, please, please stop the “walking away” joke, it’s fucking dead. Also, we see you snatching all of random YouTubers food, passed off as banter or marking territory? Gary does seem to deal with the big green monster quite a lot. And I’m not talking about Greeno.

For someone who claims to have been in the industry for many years, I find his vocabulary to describe the food extremely limited and repetitive. But then again they are all the same, and not actual foodies.

He said the channel is going to end next year sooner if the abuse gets worse.
I don’t think that would be such a bad thing, these reviews (not just Gary’s) are becoming tedious. They’re all copying one another, going to the same places, formulaic … When every food influencer is queuing outside the same Claridge’s bakery or the same chippy in Margate, it stops being food criticism and becomes something closer to a social media trend dressed up as journalism.

If this all went down in Waitrose (I haven’t watched), why didn’t he speak to management there and they would have it all on their cameras to get the police involved? That’s exactly what I would do if it happened to me.

Bet he’s having a right giggle with his foodie mates over what he’s cooked up. To use his elderly mum with dementia in all of this is tragic and disgusting.

A narcissist. It’s a well known narc tactic to recruit what is called flying monkeys to pile on someone who has bruised the narc’s ego.
More and more, I find myself genuinely believing that 99% of those who start YouTube channels are narcissists. Aside from the very, very few who genuinely possess a skill/talent that is 'teachable' or keep their identity hidden... I think it takes a certain personality to think 'I am worth watching'.

For accounts like Gary's - where the food or travel reviewing isn't actually any kind of chef-level skill - I think it is genuine narcissism that drives them to think 'I am not an expert in this area but people will want to watch me anyway'.

Oh no having to answer a question, how awful.
Didn’t he tell that man in the chippy not to reply to comments! Seems he needs to take his own advice. The more well known you become well .. the more attention you will get. it’s like when people are desperate to be famous and then get fame, and complain about being papped. You have to take the rough with the smooth. all this(highlighting it) Im going to put you online and am pinning this online, so I can send my flying monkeys after you vibe.. (bit Jackish)..

Remember the look on the Chef’s face in Harvester.. when Gary requested a special word to “commend” him on a job well done 👏 Then plastered the guys face on it, with an “I approached the chef” angle.

I concur 100%. So many YouTube vloggers are exactly as you describe. The interesting thing about narcs is they have an outside the home persona that doesn’t match the in the home/family one. With technology they’ve now been able to up level their outside persona to the world and not just their local community; and are being financially rewarded for said faux personas.

If you’ve not checked in with him the big headedness has accelerated. There are several behaviours that range from amateurish annoyances all the way to full blown delusion on his part. Gary seems to have decided that he is to the manor born, and when I first saw him he was boring but relatable in a sense, now every time he approaches something that is anyway commercial it’s so condescending, considering he can’t even summon anything original to say ever (such as praising a pie shop for making their own pies or the near omnipresent comments on how well he’s crossing the road.)

Alternatively if the subject of the video has a high price point or sounds vaguely foodie it’s instantly much better because of it. Recent hits are him and Harrison someone or other, who you’d believe was the second coming of christ as Gary jus his pants over his middling subcount, eating a £300+ pile of sh*te in what seems to be a ‘stunning’ bricabrack shop, well the key bit of content and culinary genius on display was dipping chips in mash.

Stunning. They then rope in Gary’s pet northerner to try and add some contrast to Gary to make him look like he’s some posho, where as he gives me more the vibes of man who would eat cold beans from the can in his pants if no one was watching.

The man cannot pronounce words to save his life, at Nandos we’re treated to HOOmous and pita, thank god the chain isn’t micheLAN star rated either. He seems to know nothing, which even a single watch through of kitchen nightmares would prep you to do a more convincing impression of someone experienced with food. (That’s not to mention the Ramsey-esq twang he likes to say basic nonsense in from time to time)

Last one for this visit to the trough that is YouTube food content, Gary stop talking down to the staff at resturants. They’re not amazing or kind for bringing you food, you’re telling on yourself that you think you’re above them. You’re not a force for good, treat them like people. And he’s nice as long as they don’t talk better than him (not a hard bar to clear) then the green eyed monster comes out. Inauthentic slop pretending to be high brow.
