Demands for people to "pay for labour" that people have voluntarily done. No one asked her to screengrab and share those slides, especialyl when she had no part in the ~drama~ it comes across as exploitative. This whole situation is a mess and I'm not picking sides, I think everoyne's as bad as each other. But it is highlighting how, just because you're a marginalised Black woman doesn't mean you're always right or never exploit other people!I really don’t understand why she’s making so much money off of reposting messages. Jeez, so now LBG has had to upload a story saying sorry for reposting private DMs between Munroe/ Gina with other black people. I mean, I use "say sorry" as a turn of phrase because she didn't actually apologise at all to either woman for grossly infringing on their privacy, all she said was "I'm just starting to understand now that I shouldn't have done that" and made some excuse about how she was trying trying to "report" on the story. Jesus bleeping christ, if I could do such a botched job of "reporting" and get paid £4,000+ in just over a week for my terrible handiwork I'd be laughing my way to the bank!

Why does she keep saying she doesn’t dislike Florence Given and avoiding what she’s doing by saying it’s okay because she isn’t adding comments to the screenshots? Honestly I thought she’d screenshot a few but she has taken it so far now and she can’t keep saying she “doesn’t dislike florence” - it’s ok to say you don’t like her lol you clearly don’t but the way she’s going about it is so problematic now. Loud Bossy Gross requested people "pay" her for the "labour" of screenshotting the insta messages that other people are sending her, and doing a couple IG lives. She's made 3 grand in a week. Same with Chidera, her book sales must be through the roof right now with so many people picking up a copy having only heard of her through the drama. And I'm sure Florence's sales are just fine as always lmao.
What always gets me is that the loudest voices on social media tend not to be the voices in the greatest need of financial reparations. Chidera sold 50,000 books, she is a middle class British young woman, and yet people are swarming to send her money. It's just such a shame when there are literally black families in this country who are relying on food banks, charities, and support from their church or friends as a result of intergenerational deprivation and racist policies like the hostile environment preventing them from earning a living or claiming benefits.
All these white do-gooders would be doing a lot more good by donating to a charity that either directly supports working-class black people and those without an immigration status, or one that does policy and advocacy work to try and remove these racist policies. A middle class woman earning £3k in a week from reposting messages and doing a couple of unscripted videos, and all the white activists patting themselves on the back for their performative activism, absolved of their white guilt for having ever liked Florence - well, to me it's a disgusting example of profiteering.
Sure, pay black people for their labour, emotional or otherwise - but there is no way you can convince me that £3,000 in a week is the value of LBG's "labour"

LBG said their aim was to have a discussion, but really the majority of DM's being shared are just repeating the same thing over and over in phases (Florence is overrated, Florence used to be a bully, the algorithim is to blame, people are responsible for their own algorithm, LBG isn't a bully, LBG is doing lots of emotional labour, people can't find Chidera's 2 year old book in shops in the same quantities as a recently released bestseller, etc etc).
Stephanie reposted one of Aja Barber's stories which were definitely aimed at the mess of LBG and Chidera putting pressure on Munroe to make a statement.
What started as something with valid points (irrelevant what the "whole truth" is, and that both books are mediocre) has turned into a total mess.

I’m so glad I found this thread, like someone else said, I looked on Twitter and was surprised at how little conversation there was about it. It’s been really interesting reading everyone’s different perspectives.
I do like Florence but I also totally get why other people don’t, and I have to admit I’ve found the worshipping of her to be quite grating. I don’t think that she copied Slumflower’s books though
As other people have pointed out, Slumflower herself has been in plenty of hot water about taking ideas from other marginalised groups and has said some frankly horrific things in the past. I feel like a lot of the people jumping into her DMs with support are white women who learned about the word ‘intersectional’ and the existence of white supremacy during the height of the BLM protests during the summer and are now desperately trying to prove how not racist they are by supporting CE without any objective or critical thought. I agree that CE is subjected to racism and held to a different standard that Florence is not - but I don’t feel like that means everyone has to automatically accept what she says as fact and declare that her work was plagiarised by FG. As many others pointed out...neither of these women came up with these ideas.
I think the way Diving Bell have handled this has been an utter shambles. The emails that slumflower shared last night were infuriating and I can completely see why she chose to give notice to end her contract. That guy seems like a total wick, the way he worded his email was so crappy.

Although I really dislike Florence and can see your point. I don't think it is a case of Florence stealing unique ideas - all ideas are built upon each other - but I'm imagining this as, for example, I planned my wedding, had a big thing and thought carefully about it then 6 months later a friend in the same friendship group who was at my wedding, had a wedding with maybe 70% of the same items/styles/ideas that I had had at mine. Obviously everything I would have chosen would have likely not been original and used at other weddings, but it would feel like your friend was trying to copy your day in some way wouldn't it? It would be really weird. Then imagine you found out it was the same friends and people who helped you organise your wedding, who had helped her with her's too????
I think race comes into it only because it is easier to do the above to marginalised people. And it hurts more when someone does this to you when they have things easier in life generally. Think high school bully stealing your best friend lol.
Again, I don't love either of them but I really dislike Florence. Her style of feminism is very performative and about her. I think the Slumflower too is not the best role model but I think she had every right to speak up about the way she felt, given the way Diving Bell were treating her - again absolutely appalling and it is the main reason I am SO disappointed by other influencers under them - if not wanting to take sides for Florence or Chidera I feel they should all be standing against Diving Bell.
yeah I totally get what you’re saying re: the race aspect making it easier to plagiarise or copy or whatever we wanna call it, from marginalised people. My issue is less so what CE herself is saying as such and more the kind of DMs she is getting from white women who I feel are trying to over compensate for white guilt and using this as an opportunity to prove they’re not racist, eg the example attached.
absolutely agree about diving bell, I think looking at the bigger picture of this situation, regardless of whether FG copied her or not, the actions of diving bell have been so crappy. And definitely agree with what you’re saying about other influencers on their books - I can understand them not wanting to publicly take sides in the copying claim (I’m sure they know lots that we don’t about both sides) but it is really disappointing that they haven’t said anything about the way Diving Bell has treated/spoken to Slumflower. I know I said it in my last post but that email she shared last night from that man was actually so horrible.
