Florence Given

For the sake of accuracy, Chidera hasn't actually been "dropped" by her management. She dropped THEM back in October, giving them 3 months' notice to dissolve their contract with each other, as per its terms. After Chidera blasted Florence on her story the management company emailed her to ask whether she agrees to bringing the termination forward by one month (it was due to end in January). Unless she's told them she agrees then she's technically still represented by them - if they wanted to drop her any sooner they'd have to argue that she breached the contract and she could challenge that in court if she wanted to. I think the management's email to Chidera is understandable since she publicly dragged one of their top-selling authors on social media with no warning or attempt at resolving things behind the scenes.

Personally I think both books are dissimilar enough that Chidera doesn't have much of a foot to stand on - which is probably why she's taken this fight to the court of public opinion rather than, y'know, actual court - i.e. suing Florence over intellectual property.

I'm indifferent to both of the authors. They both regurgitate other people's ideas into insta-friendly, non-challenging, prepackaged feminism that basically tells young women things they've been longing to hear. I thought it was kinda widely accepted that they're both hacks having fairly harmless fun on the internet, but people are acting like they're both leading academics caught plagiarizing lmao.

Basically this whole drama is trite and pointless but that won't stop me grabbing my popcorn 😂
i heard she dropped
them
in oct with the agreement they continue to manage until
jan and now with all this they’ve terminated with immediate effect 🥴

They haven't terminated, though. They've asked her if she's willing to agree to terminate early. It's contingent on her agreeing to it - she actually has agency in this situation, but she's pretending she's been dropped bc that suits her narrative better.

See the screenshot. They asked her twice to provide her agreement to the change of termination date. Legally speaking, they can't change the date without her agreement unless they can prove she breached the contract - and they haven't shown signs of going down that route at all yet.

I disagree. She ended the contract and has said there was a different reason for that which she hasn't yet shared. They didn't really give her a choice did they, from the email they put words in her mouth about leaving and purposefully made her feel very uncomfortable. They took no accountably and don't appear to have done anything to make sure Florence was held accountable, in fact seems like they've jumped on her bandwagon and helped her craft a *cough* well crafted but *cough* absolute bullsh*t PR statement to post on her Instagram.

Also anyone just so angry by the fact that everyone else under the agency has said nothing??? People like bodiposipanda, Gina Martin, Munroe Bergdorf... People I have looked up to a supported for YEARS. They have said nothing when they usually say so much about everything. Especially when they usually talk so much about race etc and this whole thing clearly has racist connotations.

I actually feel so hurt.

Loudbossygross has said everything that needs to be said about Florence.
yes! Been following her too.

Chidera has been a very problematic person in herself the last couple of years especially when it comes to her views on black men in particular, I’d followed her on Twitter for a long time and she was very publicly saying she doesn’t care about male suicide meanwhile being paid to front campaigns to stop knife crime. Also, she’s copied her work from other black women and ignored them when called out on it. She has in the past twisted things to suit her own narrative, but in this case she has every right to speak up and call Florence out on her bull. The fact that Florence was warned months and months before about copying her and still carried on is shady as hell.

But why would she feel like she could stay when they're making her feel so uncomfortable? Come on, it is not that black and white, not for anyone and especially not for black women.

Ngl to only see Chidera's comments as 'you copied me' rather than 'white influencers, including Florence Given, profit off of the work of black women because of people's inherent racism' is intentionally ignorant imo.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of Chidera, but I think she's got some good points. And if Floss's money was where her mouth was, she'd drop diving bell for the horrendous way that they handled this. But I don't see that happening.

yes that is absolutely true! It’s a wider problem than just Florence and white women in general should be centering the voices of black women in feminism. So as much as I find some parts of chidera problematic, that does not mean her points arent absolutely valid and deserved to be heard.

The last screenshot Chidera has posted of Florences texts is outrageous tbh. She’s flipping the conversation and gaslighting Chidera by telling her she’s erasing her experiences. This is so typical! She tells people to learn how to apologise and doing the opposite herself, typical bully.

Yes! You would expect them to say something, but then? Behind the scenes, who knows if they want to get involved/are waiting for things to clear.

I guess they might not want to feel like they HAVE to pick 'a side'?

Yes but when it hasn't involved their agent or Florence they have all been people who have been so quick to criticise others publicly. Just makes you feel they care more about their contract with their agency than doing the right thing.

I feel like more white influencers should be calling Florence out on her bull. I think Chidera has fallen out with people in the last year or so, definitely Stephanie Yeboah from what I remember. But it’s still surprising to see a lack of people sticking up for her.

I've just seen Chidera's newest insta stories of her texts with Florence and yikes. Also, I'm so surprised that she didn't even design her own book. She really is just an influencer with a book deal.

Been following Floss for a while and im baffled by some of the comments here!

'The Floss Effect' is SO clearly tongue in cheek? She's posted loads of stories that make it clear that neither nor her audience think that she invented breaking up with partners, cutting your hair and coming out as bi ffs  some of the messages she gets are from people genuinely thanking her for what she wrote helping them come to those desicions, and she reposts those because she's proud of helping people, not because she thinks she invented these things... she's posted loads of stories where she's giggling along with people in messages its really obviously not a serious thing...

Same with 'dump him' again... its a lighthearted shorthand thing. She's in no way pressuring or shaming you to break up with a partner even if you dont want to! She doesnt need to put a disclaimer about how obviously she isnt referring to 20 year marriages where your husband might have got grumpy about doing the dishes once... because its bloody obvious thats not what she's saying!

Nah it is pretty clear how self centered she is if nothing by the way she has been talking to Chidera

Exactly! Also she’s not proud of anyone lmao, she’s more proud of the fact they helped her line her pockets. She doesn’t give a tit unless it’s about herself.

Why's she writing on her graphics 'a term coined by Florence Given'? You can't argue that's not being completely self centred and demanding credit for stuff? Most people who are genuinely desperate for things to progress and movements to take hold just push things out there without wanting a pat on the back for it. And I would argue that any phrases like that have already been used by someone, somewhere. But just cause she's got a huge platform she thinks she can declare that she invented it all

I noticed in some of the message- to counteract the fact people are saying she is inexperienced and has gaps she will respond saying she has trauma but she doesn’t want to share publicly because she is still recovering. Which is fair enough- we don’t need to know her trauma. But... if you’re still recovering from trauma then you are still learning and most likely definitely not at a place where you should be advising others. And it really shows in the shorthand messaging- telling the masses to “dump him” is fun for a percentage of that group and resonates. It’s probably how she feels inside because she hasn’t processed everything she needs to. There is a percentage in that group, myself included, who find that quite distressing. Women who have been in coercive or abusive relationships most likely wish every day they’d just dumped him. But it takes years of therapy to realise that the person you were with tried their very hardest to remove that as a choice.

THIS!!! I won’t go into my own experience but I shall say that it took me over a year to get out of a manipulative, violent and controlling relationship. No amount of ‘dump him’ slogans would’ve made me leave him. It takes TIME and COURAGE for people to conduct a plan to escape that person. Of course, I am just speaking about my own experience but no woman I know who has been in the same situation has ever just got up and left because some girl on Instagram was telling them to do so.
