Thought I'd ask here as I don't know if there's a thread for it, but there's an eclipse next week, I had no idea!
Not sure where to talk about it?

They're always an anti climax IMO.

I do recall a total eclipse and all the birds stopping singing as darkness covered the trembling earth which was kind of "awe-ful" in the purest "old testament" sense. So that one was decent "end of days" stuff.

If a hell portal opened up and demons and a few space aliens appeared and had a massive punch up that would be cool though.

You have to keep a positive mindset in this life IMHO.

You can talk about it here! Where will you be on Wednesday, are you in the UK? It's going to be quite a spectacular sight, around 90% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon.
I'm going to Spain on Monday to see totality (hopefully), as I missed the 1999 eclipse due to the dreadful weather. I've been planning this trip for over 25 years! 😊

Totality is an uncanny feeling/experience.
Everything hushes.
It's kind of profound.
Then everything starts up again and you feel kind of relieved.
it's a primal/atavistic/caveman type feeling.
Hence real "awe".

I fancy seeing another one now.

I’ve been forced to agree to make an effort to see this by my friends who have a far more positive outlook on life than I do. Tbh the way the UK has been for the past 10 years it wouldn’t surprise me if it did open up a portal to hell. 😂

With the partial ones I've not been enamoured/arsed.
If I see this one it'll be down to nagging/peer group pressure "you have to see this you miserable b" TBF.

I hope I get to see something. Any time there is anything cool going on in the sky, it clouds over and I see f all.

Nothing will beat my memory of the total eclipse in 1999. I have rarely felt so awed by nature. The way it felt when it went dark and cold will stay with me forever, it was an amazing experience.

Oh I didn't know I'd started a thread! I asked in support last night! Thank you mods.
I really didn't know until a few days ago an eclipse was happening!
I remember the last the one, felt like we were all counting down the days to it, rushing out to buy special glasses etc!
I'm in Cornwall and apparently it's a good place to experience it, the last one was really eerie, the birds all vanished!

Hopefully, you'll have a better view this time, I was in Cornwall in 1999, I have a photo of us in my friend's garden, we're all wearing raincoats but it really looks like nighttime, it was so dark!

There's a really good website which shows the details of upcoming eclipses:

Hope everyone gets a good view on Wednesday! 🌞🌚

It's totality over Greenland, Iceland and Spain. For those in 90% it might just be like clouds coming over

I'm up north and hoping for a decent view although of course it won't be totality for us. I got my glasses a few weeks ago and am now being bombarded by posts on social media of people asking where they can get any as they've all sold out / won't be here in time!

Some of us will be slumming it without the fancy specs  by means of 'pinhole projectors'*, unless somehow the stack of negatives I used in 1999 suddenly emerge from a dark dusty corner.

* handy portable tube version of which now on standby for when the phone camera burns out...

It will probs go "slightly darker" for a couple of mins in my area according to detailed reports and analysis.
I'll take their word for it and not be arsed to look if I'm busy doing something else which I likely will be unfortunately.

Then (in my region at least) there'll probably be some "paganesque/primal" intensive firework "celebrations" on the suns return which will set more crops/tinder dry fields alight!
I'll be able to see/smell/breathe/experience that so all is not lost.
I hope everyone finds some meaning/worthwhile experience in what they're looking for or looking at though TBF.

Now I've fully commited to an action plan of "not being arsed to have a look" it will probably be superb.
Cosmic FOMO or somesuch.

You don't need fancy specs. I still have fabulous photos of the '99 eclipse that I took from the reflection in a black bucket of water. I'm hoping that we catch a glimpse from Andalucia 🌑

Good bit of thinking there! I might give that a go, in conjunction with a mirror.

I don't think I got any pics of the one in 99 (I would surely remember! or they ended up in a box when I moved and have not seen the light of day since), it was a bit of an occasion as a 9 (or was it 10) storey office building emptied into the car park as management surrendered and made it sort of officially permitted when they realised that everybody including the non smokers would be nipping out for a fag break at the exact same time

And we're off! 🤩 I decided against eclipse glasses in the end (I may regret that lol) - I like the idea of 'seeing' it the same way our ancestors have for millennia.

If you haven't checked it out already, I 100% recommend the website that @klarakluckbag mentioned upthread: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/

If you input your location it will give you precise times and positions, and an animation of what it will look like in your area. They also livestream the whole eclipse. There's a lot of site traffic at the moment, so it may be slow loading etc.

In the blue peter box (along with stuff last used to help neighbours who forgot their keys...) I found a black plastic pie tray (as in half a dozen probably mince) that you can just barely see the sun through which has now had the scissors applied and has a new lease of life as phone camera protectors.
Also dark enough to allow a brief look to check if I should be starting the obsessive pic-taking!

Sky news are interviewing Hurley from Lost right now  so spoiler alert they end up in Palma! That or it's his twin brother...
