Hi everyone,

so long story short i HATE my teeth; this is due to (among other things) childhood neglect and my parents being unable to prioritse my dental health, then as i got older i developed a bad fear/anxiety of dentists, add to the mix a few years of substance misuse and addiction/ poor mental health and my teeth are in an awful state and i am so self conscious of them. I have had a few teeth removed, thankfully not the front ones but they are a horrible colour, stained to duck, and generally awful to look at.

I have decided enough is enough and im currently saving up to have it sorted. But i have no idea what would be best (ie) veneers, just general teeth whitening, or implants. To be completely honest i would love them to just take all the teeth i have left, out and put sparkly white ones in! (of course i would have to be put to sleep though!!).

I have looked at prices, at its so much more expensive to have dental work done here in the UK but ive seen Turkey is a very popular place and the reviews seem good; a bit too good to be true at times!!!

Has anyone else had extensive dental work done- such as implants? How was it, did it transform your life the way im thinking it will change my life? or am i living in a dream world if i think that if i get this done then it will change my life for the better?

Has anyone had dental work done abroad? If so, how was it? Would you recommend it?

Or if anyone has any stories to share about extensive dental work then please tell all!!!

Thank you in advance :)

I know someone who has had dental implants done in Turkey and they are amazing, had them done just off white and not too perfect so they look more natural.

Hi!

sorry to hear about your past troubles. I think your best option is to find a dentist who will do a full check up and give you a treatment plan. I don’t think getting implants abroad is your best option, if you have poor oral health and gum disease they will likely fail. Also if you go abroad and get them done cheap, a lot of dentists in the UK won’t touch them. I know you want a quick fix and for your teeth to look great but personally I don’t think this is your best option.

Try and get on an NHS waiting list in your local area. The dental contact has changed this year and is focussing on getting more patients registered, so have a look and see if you can get in somewhere. Failing that, see a private dentist for a check up.

focus on getting a healthy mouth first and then discuss options to make them look better aesthetically! You never know, a scale and polish, whitening and some composite fillings can really make a huge difference to your smile and you may not need extensive treatment!

You know i didnt even consider the idea that many uk dentists wont touch me if i went abroad.
Funnily enough my partner has said the same thing as you in terms of going to a dentist here and getting a decent scale/polish and possibly some whitening. He says my teeth are not half as bad as i think they are, and they just look like someone who has not been to the dentist for a while (which is true! But i am absolutely terrified and ashamed, and i think they would instantly judge me and i feel embarrassed tbh.
I am trying to set a good example to my children- a 9 year old and a 6 year old. As i said, i suffered quite significant neglect and abuse, and my parents never bothered taking me to the dentist. And although my children have a dentist, go to their regular appointments and check ups and they have lovely teeth (im probably a bit ott with them if anything, i think i over compensate due to how my parents treated my dental health). But my kids are aware that im scared of the dentist and i would absolutely hate for them to become anxious because of me. I hope that makes and im not waffling too much! I have just been looking and there are nothing unless people have been "referred", but i thought it was our own responsibility to try and get an nhs dentist. There is a bupa one here that is accepting people so i will look into that more :)

You could just go to a Hygenist to have a good clean and see if that makes you feel more confident about your teeth? With an NHS dentist you have to have a check up with the dentist first to be referred to the hygenist and it’s about £62. Obviously a private dentist will be more expensive but there are clinics where you can just have the teeth clean for around £50.

I would recommend to look up Slaine Smiles on insta. She is a dentist that has a highlight from her stories on dental tourism and even though I used to consider it it’s absolutely opened my eyes to the reality of it and put me right off. Would recommend a hygienist visit as others said and maybe order some Crest whitening strips online on eBay and do some at home whitening while you continue to save up for UK treatment. (If you get the Crest strips only use one or two a week with a few days in between, they seem to cause extreme sensitivity otherwise). Best of luck with your journey and I’m sure you are absolutely beautiful as ☺

My partner had all his teeth extracted and not has porcelain implants. It was done in the UK and cost £60,000+ - no jokes. I on the other hand would rather have dentures than implants.

My opinion would be to avoid a place like Turkey at all costs. If the tit hits the fan the dentists in the UK will charge to try and fix it. Plus you hear horror stories of these "dentists" in Turkey bleeping up and then not doing proper after care. It can become very expensive.

Now on the other hand one place I would actually have my teeth done abroad is in South Africa. They have some of the best dentists in the world and you will see a lot of South African dentists working in the UK. In fact the dentist who did my partners teeth was South African.

I know someone who had dental implants in Turkey and are pleased with them . However, they have a holiday home there and spend about half the year there. I'm sure it took several appointments to get the whole process done

I had two implants 13 years ago ( due to a sporting accident) they were done here in the UK. My advice would be to have it done here although I appreciate its more expensive. The main reason being is that things don’t always go to plan, you need lots of additional checks to see how healing is going, it’s possible you may get an infection and also you need to keep on top of your dental hygiene. Dentists in the uk are reluctant to work on patients that have had work done in another country, procedures and practices are different as are the materials used in the actual implant. They need looking after once they are in, it’s not a fit and flee type of dentistry. I would pay for a private consultation in the uk and see what options you have available.

I’d pay more and have them done in the uk. I’ve seen too many Turkey teeth horror stories on TikTok of people crying in agony and unable to find a uk dentist that would help them.

Also a good dentist will be understanding of your fear. A women was crying and shaking waiting to see my dentist but she was over the moon when she came out and said how reassured he made her feel.

Hi I worked as a dental nurse for many years. Over the years we had too many patients with horrific outcomes after getting teeth done in turkey. And just because they don't fail immediately doesn't mean they won't.

I would not recommend getting your teeth done anywhere abroad. A lot of dentists won't touch your teeth if it goes wrong.

Please look at composite bonding instead of veneers. Veneers need to be replaced every 10 years. They can fall off too and when they do you will have that little nubbin of exposed tooth to walk around with until your new veneer is made, however long that may take the lab. Yes, they can look good but ask yourself have you ever seen a dentist with veneers ? You won't find one who has. There is a reason for that. Composite bonding will give you the exact same look when done with a good dentist and it will be 1/3 of the price. It also doesn't involve filing down a healthy tooth. If you have any other questions feel free to ask

Echoing the others here about getting it done in the uk. It will finacially cost more but i think it would be worth it for the piece of mind. And if you weigh up how much flights, accomidation etc it will soon add up. Also there are dentists that specialise in nervous patients so may be worth having a Google for that?

Good luck x

We are always our own biggest critics and perhaps your issues are not half as bad as you think. There are dentists that specialize in nervous patients, you should do some research in areas close to you. You could be sedated slightly to make the visit more manageable. I also think alot of these dental fads cost long term. They are expensive to start with but down the line they are expensive to fix. If you can keep your own teeth its usually always a better approach.
I had a dental implant myself and even though I was an ideal candidate I was one of 5% of people where the implant failed. I cant imagine having to deal with that had I have traveled abroad. I was lucky in that I was referred to someone who was willing to treat the original and hope for the best but other dentists wanted to take out and start again.

I’ve just seen a woman crying on TikTok over the pain from her turkey teeth, her entire face was black and blue. Builder knocked and I lost the video so I can’t see the full story.

Awww my boys 😍
Tomorrow at the game i will call Jurgen over and ask him where he got his teeth done at. Him and Roberto Firmino have the most perfect teeth. Klopps teeth havent always been this amazing though, when he first came to us in 2015 his teeth just looked like a normal 50 year old man's and now he has that hollywood smile.

Anyway thank you everyone for replying. I have got an appointment at the private practice where my partner and our kids go. My partner says the dentist is an expert in dealing with nervous patients and will be amazing with me. So i am going on Tuesday for a consultation/first time check up or whatever they do on a first visit. I have met the dentist before when i have took my kids and he is very good with them so lets hope he is as good with a 35 year old scaredy cat!

The thing about my teeth, ive had a few teeth out but they are at the back, when i smile i have no gaps; my partner thinks im just over reacting and my teeth are not as bad as what i think they are, and he said even a scale/polish and maybe a whitening treatment would make all the difference. I am just scared and anxious, and i think i will be judged. :)

You won’t be judged, that’s their job. You have nothing to lose, have the consultation and see what they recommend. Dentistry has come on in leaps and bounds over the last 10 years even, there will be many more ways of keep you comfortable. Also if you decide to go ahead you can have the work
Done in stages. If you have gaps towards the back you can have a bridge to fill them which is more cost effective than implants and save your implants
for the front of you need them. Your dentist will suggest and guide you what to do. Keep us posted how you get on.

I had composite bonding and whitening on my front 4 teeth as they were discoloured from a knock when I was younger and it changed my life!

You definitely won’t be judged, you sound like a lovely patient and a dentist would be happy to have you as an ongoing patient 😀 believe me, some are horrors!

good luck!

personally, I wouldn’t bother with an implant at the very back unless you lose a lot of molars and have trouble chewing.
