Decluttering challenge

New to Tattle Life? Click "Order Thread by Most Liked Posts" button below to get an idea of what the site is about:
Operation Sort Out House took place this week. We moved our toddler into the guest bedroom and the baby into his bed. The toddler got his first big boy bed and the baby got promoted from the Snuzpod to the cotbed. Rejigging all the furniture allowed as to deep clean and declutter each room as we went. Listed the Snuzpod and some odds and ends on Facebook Marketplace and they all sold within hours of uploading. Uploaded a couple of bundles of baby clothes this afternoon. OH listed a bunch of blu rays onto ebay and he's sold a bunch already. We didn't quite finish all the jobs we wanted to but we managed to work through a big chunk, no mean feat when trying to work with a very clingy baby. Got our office and garage to sort and then it's just a case of keeping on top of selling on the baby clothes as and when he grows out of them.
Wow, you guys got a lot done! Congrats on the big boy bed and cotbed milestones. And impressive that you sold those items so quickly!

I was chuffed they sold but such a faff with so many chancers on Facebook. Like we priced everything fairly so people were getting a good deal but still got messages offering less than half the asking. Some people really take the pee.

I can’t believe I had to look a few pages back to find this thread, it’s been quiet!

Have been making amazing progress with not so much de cluttering but more optimising life? Have made use of those vacuum bags for stuff stored under the bed, idk why I never thought to try pillows/duvets in it but it shrunk them down to nothingness! I then put the shrivelled bags into a standard under storage bag to make it easier to drag in/out, but cut down the space used massively!

Have improved how our bedroom curtains are hung after it annoying me every time I looked at it. Am making a list of jobs like that to just get through, even one a week is great progress. Have sold a lot on Vinted this week too which always makes me excited! Also sorting the dreaded odd sock pile and repurposing any lost souls tonight in front of the tv.

I have been plugging away at sorting out all the crap that was dumped in the spare room. 😜

And with that I have gained more mental clarity, really strange shift in emotions & perspective.

I mean it want dirty it just was a tip with clothes overspill, work stuff, packaging you might need and things that had been ‘set out of the way’

Did a major clothes, shoes & bags sort a few weeks ago and left loads to charity shop. Have started a Vinted but I just needed them out of my way to keep momentum going. So donated instead of resell.

Then when I got some space, physically and mentally, I started listing stuff on Vinted.
Have made about £800 so far so delighted with that. And kind of regretting not selling the first 5 bin liners that went to charity.

Vac packing must be in the air 😜
I did all my spring summer stuff and have them neatly put away. In the bottom of the wardrobe.
I have put on a bit of weight this year.
One bag was things that were a little tight that I didn’t get wear of this season. So have that clearly labelled and come spring it will be the first opened and if it doesn’t fit it will all be going on Vinted!

It’s all encouraging me to take a little bit at a time and sort sort sort!

Joining you lovely lot as I am starting a new job in 3 weeks and desperately need to clear some clutter!

We have new furniture (coffee table, tv unit, desk) which has no drawers - only shelves - giving me a perfect excuse to empty everything and get rid!
Mr Mog has a seriously bad habit of being a hoarder so I am going to trial the 5 items a week with him, but for me if I've not used it in 6 months it's gone 😂

Have been deep cleaning the house this week. Got a pile of bits for charity, pile for Vinted and a pile for Marketplace. Sold all the baby clothes wee man had outgrown, happy they're gone but sad because memories 🫠 Got a bunch of books I need to log onto a spreadsheet to send to a local bookstore to see if they'll buy any. If that doesn't work Ziffitt or charity shop. Slowly getting there. Once this is all done just need to keep on top of it ready for when we move.

Glad to see this thread. I’ve been selling bits on Vinted and eBay and donating some. I’m going to go through all the clothes I didn’t wear over summer and probably charity shop them cos I just want them out. Going to chuck all my years old pants and socks too.

I decluttered two pairs of shoes today. Hadn't worn the sandals in about tn years. They looked lovely when I first bought them, but they would have needed the entire heel replaces and now I saw also that the fake leather lining started disintegrating. Plus no occassion to wear them.
Other pair was pumps I had bought about 8 years ago for a job interview and hated. They never were comfortable and also now saw that they were badly scratched in some places.
Both went to the bin. and they could have gone there four years ago when we moved house or any time before that. Not sure why I cling to clothes, I often feel bad about decluttering them - I'm often too lazy for vinted/would need to get a carton and I don't have a lot (I'd maybe be able to sell ~10 pieces there for ~2-5€). Plus I find clothes are such a minefield - at least here - you're not supposed to bin them because they could be useful, but donation containers complain they get too much and it's not of great quality, you could sell them but they're not in a condition anyone wants to pay for...
Also threw out a very very holey bed sheet, good riddance. That thing disintegrated by looking at it.

I would love to have more "invisible" storage - we don't have a cellar or anything like that and some items simply don't fit well into a cupboard like spare pillows. I have them in an under-bed thing, but I really don't like it, because I'd love to have nothing there. always need to drag it out and up to vacuum and it gets so dusty there.

I have one of those annoying cupboards that used to hold the cylinder in the 2nd bedroom. It actually goes over the stairs and you have to climb up into it.
When a new combi boiler was fitted downstairs, I got rid of the cylinder in the cupboard and bought a couple of sets of black plastic shelves from Argos and put them in the cupboard and then i used plastic boxes with lids, those IKEA £4 zipped bags with carry handles - things like that and I stacked the shelves and put the Christmas trees in there.
It's worked so well that I've decided to put all the Christmas stuff (including jigsaws) in that cupboard as well as all the other sundry household stuff not used all year.
So I'd probably put your pillows in the IKEA £4 zipped bags. I put all my cold weather throws, clothes and accessories in them in the bottom of my wardrobe. The carry handles make it easy to grab them.
I've got another odd area at the top of my fitted wardrobe which is a tall, deep shelf which I'm going to designate the Halloween and possibly Easter/Spring cupboard and pack things away in boxes and bags.
Then hopefully I won't have to rip out the whole house for example, to find where I've squirrelled away the Halloween stuff! 😖

I have one of those zip bag thingies that goes under the bed (don't think it's ikea, but I'm not sure, and it needs replacing as it ripped as well)! I just don't like having it there in the first place 😂 In an ideal world I'd not have anything under the bed so that the robovac can waltz in without me needing to grab it first... Wish we had space for more shelves, but we really don't.

That's why I liked the Argos black plastic ones. I could build to the height of the cupboard. Wish they did them in more widths/heights. They are so light but strong.
I can see from the reviews that others are using them for inside cupboards and finding them strong and sturdy and they can be used everywhere.
The bag looks to have dropped in price:
These are the kind of plastic boxes I mean:

My house looks like a bomb's exploded. I had to find something at short notice for someone who came to help with an outside job. I ended up throwing everything out of the big under stairs cupboard on to the lounge floor.😫 I heard myself yelling "I've organised my house and I still can't find anything!"
I'd just started a second sweep of the house recently as I realised I'd missed things like top cupboards. I've been finding tea lights, solar lights, candles - all things I've refused to buy as I knew I had them somewhere!
I've got things waiting for a container as I shuffle things around, as again I probably already hold a container for them which probably has things shoved in that I don't know where else to put.
So I have "stuff" waiting....
Does anyone else understand and have the same problem, or am I slowly going bananas! 🤷‍♀️

I can relate to this, I have a huge cupboard downstairs which is full of all the sort of stuff people would keep in a shed/ garage (I don't have a garage and hate sheds as they're spider havens 😂)- garden tools, jet washer, fence stain, garden sofa cushions, decorating stuff and all general DIY materials. It's neatly stacked to an extent but if I need to get something out that's right at the back I have to empty the whole cupboard and and up with a similar exploded bomb look.

I’m officially moving in around 7-8 months.

Since I moved to my current place, I tried to keep things to a minimum as I knew I would be leaving. (My tea collection however has grown exponentially though).

I cleaned out a small cupboard in the living room and had someone come this week to collect two bags of books, I no longer needed. It felt better than throwing them away and he was grateful for them.

I don’t have a car and I will be leaving things behind for my landlord that can be easily replaced and used by someone else that aren’t worth the effort of being dragged along in my suitcase on a train like the Tesco kettle, a drying rack. £1.50 supermarket plates .

Perhap you could add interim holding containers until you find the real ones?
I've been eyeing up jars going in the recycling. I really don't want to buy more of things I've probably got. 😒

I've got those wonderful Argos black plastic shelves and lidded boxes I've mentioned before, so it's not as bad as it could be. Maybe I need to buy another and put one each side. something to muse on. 🤔

Finally threw out my Real Techniques brushes. They were the old style ones with rubberised handles and they'd gone all sticky. Nothing I tried helped with the stickiness so I chucked them out. Have made myself a capsule makeup bag to test out my products and figure out what I do and don't like. Have included project pan items too. Hopefully slowly reduce my collection size 😊

Have measured up for the shelving I didn't think would fit in the under stairs cupboard, as mentioned above, and they do easily!
So off to Argos to pick some up.
Might even be able to finally get the vacuum cleaners in there, and maybe even my tool box! 🎉🎊🥂🥳

I have a Nars eyeshadow palette that got sticky and gross like this. I had to scrub it with acetone in order to melt that matte coating off. Took a fair bit of elbow grease but the box is normal plastic again. I hate this coating on all products and avoid it now, even if I like the products.
