I don't own the book but I've seen a few of her poems, they're not awful but not super thought provoking. All style, no substance type writing.

I didn't say all, but to dismiss pronunciation differences as "wrong" without knowing specifics is naive at best, elitist at worst (no offense!), especially considering there isn't just one "Australian English" and one "British English" either. If something is said in one way by a lot of (native) speakers, generally that means it is a (regional) variety of some sort (such as a dialect, sociolect, etc.), which is what I was getting at when I said I've heard it said like that a bunch. And while that may differ from the correct pronunciation in the standardized varieties of English, it is the correct pronunciation in that variety. To dismiss something like that outright is always a bit of a pretentious move, especially in contexts that don't call for a certain standardized pronunciation like that (meaning: she's not a news reporter on the BBC, she's on her own youtube channel and different contexts allow for different registers).

So no, it's not "100%" "die" (even though that's how I'd say it too) because there is no one single "accepted form". I'm not British but I would've assumed Brits would be especially atuned to this kind of thing, given how vastly different British regional accents are and how strong the bias and discrimination based on one's accent still seems to be there? Maybe not, idk. Sorry, I'm not trying to ruin the fun here (I love the snark!) or come for you specifically but if you're gonna snark, snark about something snark-worthy imo. Not about someone just... saying words slightly differently.

If someone I was speaking to said macabre that way I'd say: "do you mean macabre?" She has a degree in English lit (right?) So there is no excuse.

I'm from the UK and I know which words from other English speakers are pronounced differently, and absolutely accept them, as they do with us. She said a lot of words incorrectly. Not due to where she is from, unfortunately.

I was just thinking the same thing, she definitely tries a little too hard to seem intelectual and ends up limiting herself. But to be fair, I think there are other youtubers who are even more repetitive with their book recommendations, I mean Carley Thorne mentions the same books in literally every video she posts.

I quite like Carley, I think she has a good balance of sharing the same books and different books. If a book tuber is recommending tons of different books every video I find it disingenuous, especially as a critical reader myself.

I definitely have tried to give her the benefit of the doubt with a lot of pronunciations. But British English isn’t different enough from Australian English that ALL these words she butchers can be chalked up to accent. And no offense but just because you heard it one way doesn’t mean they said it correctly

Regardless of “dee” or “die” -aspora, even if “dee” might not be outright “wrong,” the accepted form is 100% “die.” But more importantly the emphasis needs to be on the second syllable. diASpora, not DEEuhspora. So, yes, her pronunciation is wrong.

I guess this thread isn’t too active but I had to say something - the whole thing about Dakota not sharing her significant other is soooo cringe to me, like showing photos of their clothes hanging up next to eachother is just begging people to ask who he is. If you really want him to be kept private, you wouldn’t show pictures of his clothes or even mention that you were seeing someone?! God, everything she does is complete pretentious cringe that we all did back in 2013/14 tumblr days. I can’t believe anyone actually takes her seriously

Catholic schools are pretty common in Australia, lots of non-catholics attend them as they are heavily subsidised by the government. They are considered the "cheap" private school option, generally much more affordable than the fancy protestant private schools, but with a better standard than many public schools.

That´s interesting, I did not know that! In my country private schools are usually catholic, apart from the few private international schools.

It wouldn't surprise me if Dakota wasn't raised catholic at all, but was sent to a catholic school and is just exaggerating for the aesthetic.

I can very well see that being the case.
