I think some JW's extract their own blood and store it in case they need a transfusion - then it's ok because it's their own blood going back in - is that right?

Netflix are the best for cult docuseries. I recently watched Waco American Apocalypse and Keep Sweet Pray & Obey. Both excellent.
What always amazes me is that they speak to ex members or 'survivors' and you know they would rejoin in a heartbeat.
From my understanding it depends if they've dedicated themselves to the church or not.
They have a ceremony a bit like a confirmation or first communion as young adults. If they grow up JW and don't 'confirm' they can leave and not be shunned. If they confirm and then leave at a later date then they are shunned.
Tbh all my JW comes from a girl who had kids in the same class as one of mine. She was JW but the kids refused to participate and she was fine with it.
The Amish do a similar thing. I watched a documentary about growing up Amish and their kids are encouraged to leave the faith for at least a year before they come back and get married. They go wild, especially the boys. In the film they just all got drunk a lot and drove fast cars.
If they didn't want to come back that was fine. They weren't shunned and other Amish who had left helped them to get jobs and they still visited family. If they came back and then left at a later date then they are cut off and not allowed back to visit.

I have family that were JW, they used to out door knocking which my cousins hated. They used to have a present day once a year in place of birthdays and Christmas, which I now think shouldn't have even been allowed.

My pet theory is that conspiracy theories have replaced religion for those with the same mindset but who’ve never been indoctrinated. They want to feel like they “know” and that they’re better than everyone else because of it.
My friends mum was a JH, friend was vaguely involved when young (avoided assembly!) but wasn’t forced. Her mum left & went back again, her funeral was JW and it was honestly one of the loveliest I’ve been to. Absolutely packed and the person holding it really knew her & gave a lovely eulogy. Full of religious bs too, but lovely. I reckon it deffo depends on the local head honchos.
My grandma was one. I wasn’t aware it was so culty until after she died. I know there was disapproval in the family because the story goes that they preyed on her after my grandad died. She used to say some strange things like they could make fake blood from coconuts so we don’t need blood transfusions.
Oddly, other than the belief that blood was bad and belief in the judgement day stuff she didn’t seem to subscribe to much else. She would give us cards for birthdays and Christmas but her work around for it was that it wasn’t a Christmas or birthday card, it was just a notelet with a picture of a flower on it with money inside.

Two for being too young and one because they were having an affair and it wasn’t their partners baby.On her deathbed, my auntie begged her to get a blood transfusion and she accepted. She also asked a friend of the family who was Anglican to give her funeral service. I’m not sure if any JWs came to her funeral or not. I’m guessing that it depends on the area how ‘on it’ the JWs are. I heard something on a podcast about people who go to the hospital to bully the sick person into not accepting blood. There was never any talk of us being cut off for not being JWs ourselves. From our POV though the whole thing was more of an eye roll situation than a genuine concern. Sounds like we were very lucky.
I’ve known several people who were shunned, when I was in my 20s as were they. One was gay. One was on her way to alcoholism and offering favours for cash. I felt so bad for them, they were so alone.
If you can find them anywhere as they are quite old programmes "escaping the prophet " and "breaking polygamy" were good TV shows about getting people out of the Flds and another cult called the order

I’ve just watchedKeep Sweet Pray & Obey and Under the Banner of Heaven, and am on the lookout for any other LDS-themed stuff as I’m absolutely fascinated by the weirdness, so any tv/book recommendations are welcomed.

I had to check whether the Duggars were LDS - It's both amazing and not amazing that all these cults are essentially the same. Anyway, Shiny Happy People on Amazon is good. I was thinking this thread might pop up wrt the whole That 70s Show and Scientology .... mad to think about the money, power and influence they have.
It was the 70s Show/Scientology stuff that prompted me to search for a more general ‘cults’ thread on here. I’ve got a current fascination with cults anyway, but the Masterson stuff plus the fact that JKR’s latest Strike novel is about a cult have ramped my interest right up!
