I just find them more appealing than the Hexi-Cardigan that everyone seems to do. I have seen a lot of Hexi cardis in odd colours or that look very bulky and it puts me off as I don't feel it fits with my style. I have seen some lovely ones as well, but it makes me worry that I would invest lots of time and it would not come out right. I also have no faith in my ability to make 2 identical hexigans

Years ago at school we got to knit a square to go into a big blanket (apparently it was for charity? But feels like a time intensive means to the end lol) and LOVED it. I’ve just bought one of those knitting kits to attempt a scarf, not sure if it’s too much for a beginner but will report back here!

I think Sirdar's Hoodstock pattern is easier and less bulky than the hexi-cardigan, but it does need to be sewn together. It's a rectangle for the back, smaller rectangles for the left/right fronts/sleeves and a square for the hood.
It's easy to adapt, I made it longer than the pattern and added wooden toggles, fastened with chain loops. I did make the hood, but made it larger.
The hood is made separately and sewn on, so you could make it without the hood, if you didn't want it. The pattern is crochet shells, rather than granny stripes, but still easy and has a similar look to granny stripes.
Stylecraft have some crochet cardigan/jumper patterns, which are also fairly easy to follow.
I'm getting so down about this.. I keep seeing ppl on YT - sustainable vloggers, or booktubers who decide to teach themself knitting and crochet and then the next minute in no time al all they're banging out hats and jumpers and doing stuff with no pattern like making scrunchies in different stitches with stripes and patterns and here am i not even getting to the stitch stage or being able to do a granny square or straight one colour scarf

Im guessing they don’t show you all their practice pieces and the times they went wrong?
I swear you absolutely CAN do it. I am the clumsiest most cack handed person ever, and if I can learn to crochet then anyone can.
Don’t think about hats and blankets and jumpers. Just start with the most basic stuff - the foundation chain, single crochet and then double crochet. Take your time and practice - after a while you will honestly get it.
This woman is meant to be good. Give it a try.
But they have all day, every day to practice...Im guessing from other threads that you work so have less time.
They won't show you that they get frustrated and upset. You see what they want you to.
Start small and keep going!
Thanks folks.. I have aced the chain.. i just sit here crocheting chains several feet long !!!!!! and then unravelling and starting again its v therapeutic, I dont think I will ever be able to do stuff like jumpers etc. I don;t think there's enough time in my life to be able to get that down at this rate lOL
my v low ambition is just to be able to do squares that can become throws/blankets. scarves etc.. we did a brief basic intro at work and one of the girls got it so fast by the end of the session she had something that looked like it could have been a knitted bookmark! That was cute.. I'd do those.
it's moving onto stitches i cant seem to get. I am not very good at learning from videos//books etc.. I think I am a person who has to be shown in person...

Nope..sadly not. Our library which is only round the corner did a one off the other week but it clashed with a job interview chat. We did have a crafting group in my old office but it was weird. My friend was in it and kept posting pics on the intranet of all the ppl and projects at the group ut the several times I went I was the only one who turned up so just sat there reading my kindle and doing my massive chains LOL
There was a trend awhile ago to make a star shape blanket called ' The Six Day Star'. AFAIK the original version was using chunky yarn and for a toddler, but there is a large DK version. I have seen video after video of people doing a ' can I make the 6 day star in 6 days' challenge.
They almost always manage it, but it is clear that they had hours and hours of free time and don't seem to be doing paid work/household work/childcare on top of what they are doing. At this point I am only interested in seeing another of these videos if they can show me how they made it in 6 days whilst working full time and looking after 3 kids under the age of 5.
So anyway don't worry about the bloggers, they probably have infinite time to spend on crafts because of youtube income.
Also, I am kinda glad that I don't go as fast as some people do. If I was knocking out a blanket/sweater every week, I could not afford to keep buying yarn required to keep up that pace.

No way have they learnt as quickly as they'd have people believe. As @Miss Begotten said, they're not showing their errors
I think I might have picked up crochet more quickly, if I'd realised there are different types of hooks - I spent way too long messing around with an inline hook. Years later, I still CANNOT get along with inline hooks.
I get you, i do some pottery classes and try to replicate what i see in videos, most of it ends up squashed and reclaimed so ive stopped watching and gone back to basics, give yourself a break and have a look at some of the cake fail or knit fail articles on pinterest it lightens the load !

Do you think you could try and explain what you’re having the issue with and then maybe we can talk you through it? ( I firmly believe that if you have mastered the chain then you can crochet ).
Is it where to put the hook into the foundation chain, how to hold the hook, the tension?
