thank you for replyingI'm literally two days into taking marine collagen capsules. I scoured review sites and every damn site has an entirely different 'best' product. Probably getting paid for who they rank the best.
Seems like liquid is meant to be best, but I just find capsules easier. Either way, it's very expensive. I got mine from Hey Nutrition and it was £71 for 3 months supply (that was with an £8 new customer discount. I thought I was getting 6 months but its two caps per day)
I found a different brand called Super Self (recommended in HELLO) it's about £20 cheaper than the above. Ingredients about the same except it doesn't have sea kelp. Four caps per day but its a much higher strength, so I'm just going to take two to make it last 6 months. I may take one month of Hey Nutrition but then take advantage of their money back guarantee.
Like I say, I believe liquid is best then powder, but I think I would personally find that inconvenient.
Yeah I only got those ones as they where half priceI'm not sure, isn't 1000g the recommended daily amount?
Edit - Ah, yes. Just read 3,000mg is recommended but 1,000-1,500mg is considered OK. Proves the review site I read wasn't all that up to par as they said nothing less than 500mg daily was worth it.
To be honest, I don't think I could increase it as it's too expensive unfortunately![]()
Seen a powder version called Hunter Gatherer. Appears high quality. £26 for a month supply and it gives you 10,000mg per serving. I think I would cut it down to a 2.5g serving at 2,500mg and make it last 3 months. Might give that a go when I'm done with the capsules. I could probably neck that back in a drink.Yeah I only got those ones as they where half price![]()
HeyHey! Just to let you know there is generally no point in taking collagen supplements, they are expensive and bring no benefits other than the placebo effect. People will happily make up all sorts of amazing claims about collagen supplements, but all they care about is getting your money.
Collagens are a form of protein, in fact one of the most common forms of protein in the human body. Type 1 collagen is found in the skin, blood vessels and bones etc, type 2 collagen is found in the cartilage and many other types of collagen are found in the body, but type 1 is the most common. Collagen and in fact all proteins are large molecules and cannot be absorbed by the body without being broken down into smaller parts called amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. This is why we have the digestive system to break down large molecules into small molecules, including proteins like collagen to amino acids. If they were not broken down then they would just pass straight through us.
Once the amino acids are absorbed into the body they then go to wherever they are needed most, that may be to build collagen in your skin or hair, but it may be to any other part of the body that your body needs amino acids. It doesn't matter where that protein has come from, meat, nuts, collagen supplements or protein supplement etc. , all of it must be broken down into amino acids to be absorbed. Your body cannot differentiate that the amino acids it has absorbed have come from a collagen pill or from meat, all your body knows is that these amino acids are to be used to build proteins, and it will send them to wherever your body needs to create more protein. So as long as you eat enough protein, which most of us in the western world do, you really don't need collagen supplements. Unless you are a body builder or have an unbalanced vegan diet, you eat enough protein.
I hope that makes sense. Please let me know if it doesn't! I hate to see people waste their hard earned money, there are many other things you can spend your money on that will make a difference to your skin, hair and nails. Collagen supplements are not it!
TL;DR
collagen = protein
protein = made of amino acids
Body cannot absorb protein as it is too large, must be broken down into individual amino acids
Your body doesn't know where the amino acids it absorbs are from and cannot direct them anywhere.
Amino acids absorbed from collagen supplements or meat or eggs etc are all treated exactly the same by your body, and are used where they are needed.
Collagen supplements do not directly benefit any particular area of your body, don't waste your hard earned money

Thank you for replying, I’ll look into retinolHey I’m no expert, but read an article about oral collagen as I was thinking of buying an oral drink. The expert said that you are better using a topical lotion that has retinal in it to reduce signs of and future ageing. Studies should that it’s impossible for enough of the collagen to get from your digestive to your face and penetrate through the layers of skin to make any difference. Hop this helps, as these things are not cheap. X
I heard effects can take up to 12 weeks by those who rate it. I take on board what @royray said, though. I've never been into supplements but was taking on anecdotal comments regarding good ones. Might just take a couple of bottles and do the money back offer.Heythis is great
the reviews are so conflicting
people have been writing how they feel amazing and see a difference in the first few days of taking collagen so I thought I would give it a go but to be honest iv been taking them a week now and I’m still waiting for this effect to happen

Thank you very much, I'd been considering buying collagen powder but thanks to your well written and informative post I won't. Would you mind if I asked you please - you say, there are many other things you can spend your money on that will make a difference to your skin, hair and nails - you've gotta tell us what these are, my skin, hair and nails have always been terrible! Ta for that, Neb! How are they for the hair in particular, please? Mine is really rit...Skin hair and nails tablets from boots are fantastic!! They are always on 3 for 2 and I tell all my clients to use them because they honestly really do work. At £6 per tub it works out at £4 per month (if you buy on 3 for 2 offer) so worth trying for yourself at that price. Hth
Great, I suffer from hair loss when I'm stressed and that's how I found these. Didnt expect much but was genuinely blown away by how good they are. If you do try them come back and give a review on this post let me know how you get on with them.Ta for that, Neb! How are they for the hair in particular, please? Mine is really rit...
