Type 1 collagen is found in the skin, blood vessels and bones etc, type 2 collagen is found in the cartilage and many other types of collagen are found in the body, but type 1 is the most common. Collagen and in fact all proteins are large molecules and cannot be absorbed by the body without being broken down into smaller parts called amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. This is why we have the digestive system to break down large molecules into small molecules, including proteins like collagen to amino acids. If they were not broken down then they would just pass straight through us.
Once the amino acids are absorbed into the body they then go to wherever they are needed most, that may be to build collagen in your skin or hair, but it may be to any other part of the body that your body needs amino acids.
