Could I ask a question, I think it’s colic but I am not sure?

First time parents and we have a 5 day old baby. He’s very hungry and takes all his milk (Aptamil powder at home and when in hospital was the ready made bottles).

He has never once been sick after a bottle and does not cry but it’s incredibly hard to get him to burp and if we manage it’s only a tiny one. He squirms, lifts his legs up, clenches his fists, goes red, sounds like he is wheezing and does all this for ages. Sometimes stops and then starts again.

He also has hiccups several times a day.

We’ve been shown different ways to rub and pat his back by 2 midwives and a health visitor but it’s not helping.

I don’t know what to do? xx
Have they told you to lie him flat when burping and then bringing him back up and bend him over? Because that might help bring up the burp? He’s so little, so he can’t even have any infacol or gripe water 😭
Maybe try and burp after every ounce, and make sure no air is getting into the bottle when he’s drinking.
What bottles is he using? Are they ‘anti colic’ ones? X

We are using Mam anti colic bottles.

No they suggested sitting him on his bum on our knee and stretching his back whilst we rub and pat it and hold his neck with the other hand or put him on our shoulder and make sure his hands are draped over and his legs are hanging and pat and rub back.

We are going to try your suggestions with burping every ounce and the position, he is due a feed very soon. Also the air thing, I’ll make sure we pull bottle away when he finishes because he’s finishing them and still trying to get more out.

Thank you so much.
My boy was prem many years ago and the colic was awful. I discovered Infacol, gave him it before feeds and also fed him in the position you mention, sat straight up on his bum with his back straight and his head slightly back. Both combined was a game changer, especially having to feed him every 4 hours. He was also MUCH better when started on a tiny half spoonful of baby rice before his supper, the solids just seemed to kick the retained wind into touch completely, he'd either belch it straight up or trump it out. 🤣 Good luck lovely ❤

My first had colic from 6-12 weeks. It was only six weeks but it felt like forever and it was absolute hell. I’m sorry your baby has it too. I hope you are able to ride it out and I hope that it doesn’t last long for you. Stay strong xx

Honestly, it’s so hard when you’re getting to know each other. Out of all my 3 babies, none of them have been sicky and only one has had reflux
We had the mam ones with the last one who had the reflux 😭

Just been through this with my little one, I can really empathize with you. My 5 month old had colic/silent reflux. He used to cry every evening from about 6pm to 11pm, we found going for a walk or drive helped and music also sometimes distracted him. the hey bear sensory videos on YouTube were amazing at Calming him down he enjoyed listening to the music on them. The colic started to lessen around 9wks and was completely gone by 12wks. We knew he had silent reflux when he wasn’t able to nap at all without wakening after about 20 mins and he would make a face when the acid would come up his throat also frequent hiccups and spitting up clear liquid, sometimes he would also have a hoarse sound to his cry. He still has silent reflux but we manage it now and it really doesn’t bother him at all. We add carobel to his milk, keep him upright after feeds for at least 30 min, making sure he gets winded regular through feed as sometimes wind aggravated it for him. Infacol helped him with the wind too. Also switched from tommee tippee bottles to MAM, they’re fantastic. Every baby is different but if I had to do it all again I would remind myself that it’s not forever which definitely would have made it easier. Best of luck hope this helps somewhat xx

@Londonsays - sorry! I got all my things mixed up! Infacol they can have from birth, so I would definitely recommend! It’s gripe water they have to be older x

How did you get on. We are going through this now and it’s so hard

Symptoms for us are evening crying, some fussy feeds, curling knees up, squirming, grunting, hiccups and stuffy nose, distressed before burping, takes a day or so to poop but they are fine when they come out, starting to develops dry skin/cradle cap, often hates lying on back

We’ve tried: Infacol with every feed, probiotics in milk, massage, sling, skin to skin, upright time after every feed, white noise and other soothing music, driving, pram, mam bottle, hipp milk, cranial osteopath, size 2 teats

I’ve put off the doctors as health visitors and husband insist it will all pass (currently 7 weeks and it started week 3), but will be devastated if it turns out to be an allergy that I’ve ignored

I am so sorry to read this and I really hope it gets better soon.

So he is now 3 months old and still as greedy. He still has days where it’s impossible to wind him. We have now incorporated other ways to help him, climbing up and down stairs, lay him down on his back and do his legs in a cycling motion, lay him on his stomach on our knee and lots of rubbing and patting his back. We also stop the bottle several times and try and wind him (sometimes he goes mad and you can’t do this). He gets sick most days but it’s not a huge amount that I’m worried. He farts a lot so I know at least it’s coming out some way.

We tried the special Aptimil milk for reflux and he didn’t like it. And I didn’t use anything like gripe water as over time it just seemed to get better.

I’m sorry I can’t be much help xx

Hello lovely,
That sounds like CMPA.

my son has it! And is now on a special formula prescription from the doctor. How old is your little one?

My son is now 8 months but he started showing (what I thought was colic) signs aged just 2 weeks. He would be grizzly and crying all days sometimes. Hiccups constantly, sounds like he’s all snuffly and blocked up in his nose, his nappies were all mucus like, a spotty acne type rash on his chest and face, kicking his legs up, just so so unsettled.

The shit GP sent me away 4 times saying it was colic. In the end we paid £210 to see a private allergy childrens doctor who took one look at him and said allergy!

What milk is your little one on?

I KNOW how hard it is, but the symptoms you’ve described are identical to what I was going through. X

edit: also, please don’t waste your money on placebos like Infacol. If it is a milk allergy, those things won’t work at all and you’re just spending money for nothing. I know how it feels though, I spent £300 taking him to the chiropractor when he was newborn as the doctor said it helps colic.

PS: no offence to your husband but mum knows best! If you suspect allergy, then get it looked into. So many people told me it would pass by 12 weeks, but genuine allergies don’t just go away at 12 weeks. It was the most soul destroying time of my life. I felt robbed of the newborn bubble. I was diagnosed with PND because of this.

Thank you all so much for your messages. I have taken screenshots and I am going to do some research online now and speak to the health visitor as she happens to be coming to visit tomorrow morning to weigh him.

My youngest cried all day, everyday. At about 14 weeks, I took him to the health visitor and she weighed him and found he lost weight. It was then she said he had silent reflux, I changed his milk and he changed over night. He finished bottles straight away, it was easier to feed and he didn’t cry all day. He’s now 2, and he is a moany child, but he is nothing like he was.
I really feel for you. It’s awful. I have 2 older children who weren’t like this so I never knew how to deal with silent reflux. He was also NEVER sick after bottles.
I would speak to your health visitor straight away. Honestly, I should not have left it for so long x
thank you - which milk did you change to?

Thank you all so much for your words of advice, I didn’t get any notifications for this thread for some reason so I’ve only just read the replies. It’s so comforting to hear that it passed with your little ones, it’s hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel at the moment x
