Christmas 2020!

I still live at home and Christmas can always be tough in my house, my parents lost three children to a degenerative disease (the kids were very young when they passed away) so usually my mum will be a bit sad/cry for a bit upstairs because it feels like there's people missing. But they always do their best to have a normal (idk if that's a good word to use) day.

But I'm excited to give my mother her gift this year! This is the first year of me finished with my studies and having a decent paying job. My mother is the type that if she has any money, she'll spend it on something for the family/or myself and my teenage brother. So, I saved up for a while and bought her a 60 inch, 4k smart tv for her sitting room she's been saying for ages that she'd love to have something to watch netflix/tv-on-demand with... I can't wait to to see her face when she gets it

We usually have a big family Christmas, but I can’t see that happening this year, so I’m trying to book for 2 weeks all inclusive at a resort in the Maldives..
Unfortunately, i stopped playing the Lottery years ago, so realistically, it’s probably going to be 2 weeks self catering, in Jaywick-On-Sea, can’t wait

We normally go to my grandparents so that will depend on shielding but other than that not sure. My family have been floating a secret santa idea rather than everyone buying for everyone for a long time so maybe this will push people over the edge.

As a country however, I think we should take this opportunity to change the fact that shops are open on boxing day and retail workers are forced to go in and deal with the attitudes of people one day after christmas. The sales should start on the 27th and be done with it.

Totally agree, I’ve been on many “gossip” type forums and sites and you’re right, tattle is a very different atmosphere, it’s been a great help to many this year I think

Last year was the worst Christmas of my life, my mum died a few months before and we made this big effort and plans to try and make it as nice as possible but ended up sitting around feeling totally miserable. It was so horrible that I feel like it’s put me off Christmas forever now. We said after that we would go abroad this year but with Covid we’re not sure about that now. I normally get so excited about Christmas, I just heard a Christmas song on Instagram and I feel fed up now!
I will refrain from sprinkling anymore festive sparkle on this thread...sorry!

I’m going to prepare myself for a few hours in the shops next week to try and get a few things bought. I’ve not been to my local city for months (I used to go into work there twice a week!) and so I’m feeling excited about it.

I’m hoping if I go on my own I can have a good spree and get a few bits done.

The reality is I’ll probably be sweating like fuck in a mask, it’ll rain and so my Primark paper bagged goodies will be spilling out all over the high street and I’ll be cursing anyone not keeping 2m from me.

I’ve had such a good day! The rain stopped, I drove the usual journey that I’d make to the car park I use for work (not done since mid March as WFH now). I was in such a good mood, I obviously just needed a bit of normality back. Singing along to the radio.

Parked up, plenty of space. Straight to Primark, probably about 15 in the queue in front of me. Waited 2 mins, then straight in! It was busy but not chaotic, I managed to get loads of stuff. Queued for the till but that was okay. Two big bags ready to fall apart and get rained on... but that didn’t happen! The sun stayed out, my bags stayed intact despite me making a few more shop runs and adding to the bags.

New Look have 25% in store at the moment. Result. Went into Lush, bought four bubble bars for my 8yo for Christmas. Wouldn’t usually get that many but I’m stocking up seeing as though it’ll be another few months before I’m likely to be back there again.

Back to car, dropped bags off ready for round 2. A few more shops, no queuing, got some good deals. Drove home, via Aldi and had another carpool karaoke for one. Bought myself a festive sandwich from Aldi... may have even treated myself to the Prosecco advent calendar too.

Came home, admired my purchases. Took photos to show friends (anyone else do this?!) Managed to get it all upstairs and chuck a blanket over it before the school run

I’ve had such a good day in my own company! I sound like a complete saddo, but this is what I needed. I feel like I’m in such a happy mood for the first time in a few weeks, simply because I got up and got on with things. No messing around, get out and get stuff done

Anyone else contemplating a last min shop before lockdown #2, I urge you to do so! Hopefully it will also lift others people’s moods too

I don’t think anything will change this year for us. I save £150 every month for Christmas and I make my list of things to buy by the middle of November and then I have a takeaway, a bottle of wine and order absolutely everything in one night. Have another takeaway and bottle of wine when everything has arrived so I can wrap it all up. I never go to actual shops anyway other than to M&S to pick up my food order and I will go to Tesco as late as possible to do my food shop. We take it in turns between my mum & dads and my husbands each year and this year it his my in-laws turn so we shall see where the land lies in terms of visiting. ALL our family (a big-ish family) and friends all live within a mile of each other so there’s never any travelling. Christmas is my favourite time of year and the only time where I’m truly ‘relaxed’ and so I will be damned if that gets ruined too. We go all out on presents and food and as it’s our wedding anniversary in the 23rd of December that will be ‘celebration’ night also! I cannot wait.

Myself and partner love Christmas favourite time of year for us. Our little girl will turn 2 on Xmas Eve.

But I feel this year Christmas isn’t going to be a nice one for a lot of families, a lot of people will be missing around Christmas table, redundancies are high. Majority of Influencers will be posting over the top Christmas present buying making some people feel inferior.

This year it’s made me appreciate my family so much more.

Guys - today is a big day!

I heard my first Christmas song of the season! Granted it was part of a meme on Instagram but I thoroughly enjoyed those 30 seconds! Lol

I can’t wait for Christmas this year. I am always a fan but I think especially so this year - obviously just having something to look forward after the shit show of 2020 but also I haven’t seen my family since last Christmas and I am pinning all my hopes on seeing them at Christmas this year. I moved away 11 years ago and if I don’t get home it will be my first time ever not celebrating with them (no pressure lol).

I have got maybe half of my gifts so far - usually start buying in the January sales for he next year. I save a year in advance so at the moment I am saving for Xmas 2021 and then just use the pot throughout the year. I love just picking bits up here and there throughout the year and it means once December rolls round I can just enjoy the festivities!

We normally put our tree up the last weekend of November - it’s my birthday 1st December and I HAVE to have the tree up for my birthday. I spend a whole day decorating the house and make it a big event with Christmas music, movies, Christmas scented candles and treats. Do you have any decorating traditions? We also like to buy 1 decoration any time we travel so then when we decorate we can reminisce on past holidays (Nothing new to add this year though)

I'm looking forward to no staff christmas party yes I'm unsociable I work 50+ hours a week some of them there make my life hell so why would I want to spend £50 plus drinking money on a meal or go out to pubs i don't like just because its Christmas.

This is my first Christmas without my children. (Ex left us a few years ago) Every time I think about it I cry. I’m spending it alone.
If anyone else is in a similar position or has had an Christmas without theirs please get in touch. I’m struggling to get by and could use all the coping mechanisms on offer.
I know lots of people have much worse stuff going on so please don’t think I am ungrateful with life. I’m just constantly sad.

I am going to treat myself to a Christmas stocking this year. I already know what will go in it: lottery scratch cards, walnuts, chocolate coins, Haribos, an apple, hand lotion, a mini fruitcake, a pair of earrings and perfume. I even have a fireplace with mantle to hang it on.

So glad I found this thread, just read through it and now I feel so Christmassy! I’m going to start Christmas shopping next pay day I think. I’ve been spending way too much recently on myself so from next month I’m doing no spending on myself (other than food etc) and just getting presents.

Really stuck for ideas for my boyfriend - might look at booking a night away in one of those cabins with a hot tub but they all seem so expensive

On Christmas Eve morning I travel back home then in the evening my mum and I visit family to drop off presents and usually end up drinking (even though we always vow we won’t) and having to phone my Dad to come and pick us up because we can’t drive then we go home, order a Chinese or a pizza and sit and watch christmas films in our marching pyjamas. My brother and I are in our 20s and still have matching pjs every year. He has moved out with his girlfriend now but they’ve decided to both go back to their own family for Christmas morning and see each other later. My mum also still insists we go to bed early so she can put out our presents.. apparently it’s not the same if we watch her do it

Christmas morning we spend just the four of us opening presents and then have Christmas dinner at about 2. We then go round to my aunties where there is about 20 of us and have a lovely day playing games and eating more food. My brothers girlfriend comes to join too. Hoping this can still happen this year my cousin has children who are 4 and 1 so seeing them is the highlight of my day as the older one is old enough to understand “Santa” and she gets so excited.

Boxing Day is full of food and staying in pjs on the sofa all day

So glad I found this thread !! I Christmas !!

This year we have decided that we are all going to have to celebrate in our own houses which is a bit sad as everyone has come to mine for Christmas day for the last 14 years but with us all working in jobs that are with the public or in care my mum dont feel it's worth the risk ,so it's going to be strange this year.

My favourite day is Christmas eve though , when it gets to about 3pm and everything is done and you can just relax!

We always go for a walk Christmas eve which although the kids are 15 and 16 they still enjoy !

I've started getting a few presents ,I'm waiting for my Christmas vouchers to arrive then I can start properly .

Looking forward to the dark nights, christmas lights ,hot chocolate!

This is a lovely thread!

I’ve lived outside the UK for the past 8 years but my OH and I have decided to move home, hopefully at the beginning of December. Our flights are booked, we’re just keeping fingers crossed they don’t get cancelled.

we live in the Southern Hemisphere currently and we so miss cold christmases. We’ve already written a list of all the things we want to do this Christmas, including having brand new Christmas pyjamas, tins of roses and quality street, watching Wallace and Gromit, new slippers and bed socks, baking my Christmas cake and going for lots of cold wintry walks.

I hope Christmas is happy and peaceful this year. God knows everyone needs it.
