I’ve followed CH since the “Beauty Mouth” days and had a personal consultation with her 6 years ago. Back when I saw her she was really warm and easy to talk to. She didn’t take fools gladly but was nowhere near as aggressive as she comes across now. She also sorted my skin out.
She and her site have definitely changed. Everything is financially driven now. I don’t trust her reviews anymore and her instagram posts are now adverts. It’s a shame but it seems to have happened with most of that Gleam cohort (Ruth, Lily, Anna, etc).

I think it's questionable that she's on This Morning promoting products / brands that she has or has had a commercial relationship with but doesn't have to provide any disclosure to inform viewers. The lines are getting very blurred between her being a commercially minded blogger / instagrammer / author and "expert". How can the tv appearances be free from bias when so much of what she says, shows and promotes is dictated by her relationship (££) with the brand. See also Sali Hughes - journalist or marketer?

@SqualorVictoria I certainly agree with what you’re saying. The PR agencies that are involved - CH’s, Space NK’s and the brands included in the box will have signed off who the freebies were sent to and I definitely think there’s a case ‘you’re in my gang’ so regardless of reach they would get the sample / gift. Should have been a bit clearer, my point was a more general one about the reason why there seems to be a blanket approach to sending gifts to influencers - it’s to ensure coverage and engagement. Also there’s sometimes an approach to seeding products that makes the product more desirable if it’s sold out.

The budgets are significant but I doubt they are much different (as a percentage of revenue) than they were when it was all above the line old school advertising as influencer marketing has historically been a bit cheaper (although I am certain that’s no the case anymore).

For a prime spot in Selfridges beauty hall at Christmas they charge 10’s of thousands to be front of store so the money being spent is still huge in other areas too.

Not sticking up for the influencers at all, I’m just trying to look at other aspects.

You're spot on but it sickens me that influencers get to sit on the gravy train and get free stuff while the pleb on the street subsidises it. The whole influencer culture is capitalism gone crazy

She certainly knows some things, but she cannot and does not know everything. There’s always room for alternative opinions and learning, and any top professional knows when to take good counsel and listen to advice from others who do not necessarily share your views.

I totally agree, she knows some things. But working a counter is not the same as being a doctor. If I have skin problems I would listen to a dermatologist not her. I think for basic tips/tricks there’s nothing wrong with her per se, but she is by no means an expert. All, and I mean ALL, her opinions are money based. She touts products that she has been paid to push (ads, affiliate links etc). How the hell can you trust someone like that? I personally don’t.
People think (and esp herself) that she is the be all, end all of skincare. Fuck no. She’s a loud mouthed, obnoxious rude bitch.

I think CH, with her globally qualified knowledge of every skincare brand out there, has performed a vital scientific experiment.

By acknowledging her botox and fillers, she has shown us all that skincare doesn't work. It just doesn't do what it promises. It smells nice, it feels nice to apply. But that is all.

So the woman has performed a vital public service, and good on her for having a conscience which whispers to her in that no bullshit way: Caz, love, how can you recommend creams costing hundreds to women knowing they are wasting their money when even you have abandoned the notion that good skincare is all that's needed....
