Boybands Forever

I’ve watched all 3 of the Girlbands Forever episodes and without giving anything away, the no mention of Girls Aloud at all, not even in a conversation with one of the talking heads, in the voiceover, or in the video montages is a bit odd, especially as episode 3 talks more about Little Mix and how they found fame on a TV talent show so you’d think mentioning Girls Aloud, who did the same almost a decade earlier, would have been an easy link.

Girls Aloud had 20 consecutive Top 10 hits, more than any other girlband

Even B*Witched were briefly seen in the section talking about girlbands getting magazine covers

I was shocked about that and I was looking forward for them being part of it

i thought that was bizarre too - especially with them being SO successful and arguably one of the biggest heat magazine era girl groups (given the narrative they kept doing with the gossip mags). they even mentioned girl thing 🤣 there must have been some kind of do not discuss message from their camp otherwise it’s just weird.

i really wanted them to discuss the all saints breakup more too; watching it was really shocking to see what a rough ride both appleton sisters had from the press.

I wonder if either there is something bigger in the pipeline for Girls Aloud - there is lots to say, they were the first to get proper acclaim from tiresome musos, they were massive with students etc - or poor Sarah's passing is too recent to touch their story.

Does anyone think the Spice girls will do a tour for 2026?
I would LOVE that. I’ve got very nostalgic for the music of my early teens lately. I’d see boyzone if they did a proper tour.

I was far too indie cool (in my head) to be into pop music from the mid 90s onwards with the exception of the Spice Girls who I just love. And a lot of the 2000s stuff passed me by since I moved out of the UK so quite a lot of stuff was new for me. But god bless Kerry Karina. She’s obviously so ducked up but I really enjoyed listening to her

The anti-Spice Girls narrative and inaccuracies in the first episode was a bit much.

Chris Herbert claiming he wanted the girls to dress as themselves is simply untrue. Part of the reason they left him was because he wanted them to conform and dress the same, sing songs written by other people and gave them a shoddy contract. The group stalled on signing after their showcase was successful and they made contacts with people in the music industry.

They stole their demo tape and did a midnight flit. They also wrote the majority of their album and only then did Simon Fuller come on board. They were already a full package. Once Simon got involved, there was a competition between the record labels to sign them. London Records tried to woo them with a boat trip along the Thames but ultimately they signed with Virgin.

Funnily enough, a year later after the Spice Girls blew up, London Records signed All Saints. In their first press release with Music Week, Melanie Blatt said "we're more prettier than the Spice Girls and can sing better than them" - so it was clear from the beginning they were being marketed as the anti-Spice Girls.

The Spice Girls may have started off as a manufactured group but they certainly took things into their own hands and manage to flip the entire process on its head. Their story to success is quite remarkable so it was sad to see them being diminished to manufactured rubbish. It was ironic previous girl group members were being sneering of pop music and girl groups - something they must've been have been all too familiar with.

Was it Chris they ran away from in the middle of the night shoving all their stuff in a car?

Michelle Stephenson was another one that didn’t get a mention at all

They were so iconic. I'm extremely happy to have been a 12 year old girl in 1996 ✌🏽

Lots of girl groups were amazing and I think I love them more than boybands, but for impact? No one came close to the Spice Girls.

Kimberley Walsh was just on Good Morning Britain. She said they were approached to take part in the Girlbands documentary, but they were on such a high and in a good place off the back of the recent reunion tour that they didn’t want to go over the negative aspects as they weren’t in that negative place, hence why they turned it down

Still odd there wasn’t at least an honorary mention in the doc though

I’m just in the middle of the first part. She may be bitter but I remember absolutely loving Melanie Blatt’s hair and just general attitude 😍 She’s 50! Wish I looked like that now at 39😆. Atomic Kitten were a firm favourite too. Aaah layered, highlighted hair….still my go to look now 😆

I loved the combats and vest top combo that All Saints wore, it was a staple look for me.
I found it refreshing to see how fresh faced they looked, no fillers etc, candid photos without filters. Makes me sad in a way the way things have changed but I don’t know if that’s just me getting old!
