Loving the lists!! Haven’t read many on them either - I think this is all showing me that despite having read loads I clearly need to read more 😂

I’ll do mine later once I’ve reviewed my word document 🙈🙈

I've read barely any, both on the "official" list and on the lists on here. Lots to add to my ever growing TBR, but it's all subjective isn't it? I tried East of Eden which everyone on here seems to love, but I wasn't bothered by it. I have discovered far more good books on Tattle than on these pretentious lists for my tastes. :)

I’m also very contrary and if people go on and on about how good a book is I won’t read it 😂😂 (it’s why I’ve never seen titanic 😂)

I’ve just joined the library and got BorrowBox now as well. I downloaded this and really enjoying it so far.

ETA: trying to curb my spending on books !!

Also borrowed physical books: Miss Bensons Beetle by Rachel Joyce which was really wonderful, and Graham Nortons Home Stretch in hardback which is an engaging read so far.

1) All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque
2) Keep the Aspidistra Flying - George Orwell
3) The Shepherd's Crown - Terry Pratchett
4) Sistersong - Lucy Holland
5) The Stone Book Quartet - Alan Garner
6) The Summer Book - Tove Jansson
7) Mother Night - Kurt Vonnegut
8) The Word for World is Forest - Ursula K Le Guin
9) The Lion of Al-Rassan - Guy Gavriel Kay

Awww your no 10. Makes me want to read the whole of Swallows and Amazons all over again. I absolutely loved all their adventures as a kid.

My top ten:

1. A Little Life - Hanya Yanagihara
2. The Passage - Justin Cronin

after those the rest are in no particular order:

Anne of Green Gables - Lucy Maud Montgomery
A Kind of Intimacy - Jenn Ashworth
The Hand That First Held Mine - Maggie O'Farrell
The Stranger Beside Me - Anne Rule
How To Be a Woman - Caitlin Moran
The One - John Marrs
This Is Going To Hurt - Adam McKay
A Matter of Death and Life - Irvin Yalom

I desperately wanted to include Poor by Katriona O'Sullivan in there too but it deserves an honourable mention because its such an amazing book.

I checked my 5 star/favourites lists but I'm afraid none of then are recommendation worthy. It is mostly full of books I know to be bang average but I just enjoyed them very much 😅 Or very well known books in general.

The book curse is broken, I spent almost all Sunday reading. Richard Osman is getting a fruit basket from me for keeping my attention this long when my brain felt like a chihuahua on c after spending weeks scrolling on my phone. Can't wait to finish it this evening and start the next one.

That's absolutely fine! It's lists of people's favourite books, well known or not, "classics" or not.

If you'd like to make a list please do ☺

1. There is no judgement here! We wanna know everyone’s favourites. None of this is about what’s “objectively” the best. I don’t think we will be seeing too much Ulysses here. (I still think it’s utter pretentiousness)

2. I wanted to say how your “chihuahua on c” comment made me snort my tea I laughed so much but somehow my phone google searched it instead of just copying and I got this:

My list is basically books that evoke a strong emotion in me regardless of whether they're technically well written or influential or whatever.

I think your 10 favourite books are definitely recommendation worthy. If you enjoyed them, then other people will too? I just thought of the first 10 books that ive either reread a lot because i loved them so much or plan to. I actually have thought of loads more too! Do your list and be proud of it!

I’m realising a lot of my top ten are books I read years ago and still think fondly of, but I haven’t read recently and am now concerned that if I revisit them I won’t love them anymore!

I loved Less by Andrew Sean Greer when it first came out, and then tried to reread it last year and couldn’t get through it and it put me in such a reading slump.

I know this fear! I absolutely loved Cold Comfort Farm when I first read it, and listened to it last month, and it just didn't hit the same

I can never reread One Day or All the Light We Cannot See, because I know I can't recapture the magic.

I’m planning to reread East of Eden before the Netflix version comes out, but have a very real fear that it won’t live up to my memory of it! The stupid thing is I’ve already read it more than once but you just never know!

In terms of favourite/best books I think that longevity is one of the factors that makes them favourites. Especially among those of us who don’t always remember the books we read (🙋🏼‍♀️) the fact that something sticks with us over time automatically elevates it and makes it a contender for a top 10 list. (Still working on mine btw! I’ve filled 8 slots so far!)

Same, my 5 star books are ones i enjoy remember, and want to re-read but i know some of them are not the best books overall.

That being said i don't think i actually have a list of 10 5 star books 😬 unless i count like all harry potter books etc as individual ones 🤣

If it makes you feel more like contributing - my list is definitely going to feature YA fantasy and something from the ‘chic lit’ (hate that term) genre alongside the more ‘serious’ e.g. handmaids tale

I read Less, and when I'd finished it, I couldn't actually decide whether I'd liked it or not.

There’s been a sequel which I was very excited to read, it’s what prompted me to reread Less, and now I’ve just abandoned the entire endeavour. I think Less won a big award too. Oh google tells me it’s the Pulitzer!

Yeah, I saw there was a sequel, but frankly I just couldn't be bothered to get it. Didn't love the first. Saw no point reading the sequel.

I think I just very rarely enjoy the big award winning books, booker/Pulitzer etc.
