Finished reading Doctor Zhivago.

I’ve been in Windermere for a couple of days and just picked up a great charity shop book haul..
The Vanishing Half - Brit Bennett
The Cuckoo’s Calling - you all know..
Killer’s of the Flower Moon - David Grann
Precipice - Robert Harris (of Conclave)

I thought I'd post this here, as I think you're less likely to lynch me out of grumpiness.
It's not about books, but will probably end up on my bookcase, and I'll be going back to the shop to get more.
It's an ornament that I bought to brighten up my home a bit, cost £1.99, but it's having a miraculous effect on people.
Everyone who looks at it starts smiling like a Cheshire cat - big squashy grins.
Even the till operator, as it was actually facing her on the conveyor belt, grinning away at her.
I've done her job and it's a bit soul destroying. She stopped and burst out in a big grin, then looked at me - I was thinking what's up? She even looked me right in the face again and said goodbye when I got the till receipt like we were best buddies.
It's carried on ever since with people bursting out grinning at me the minute it smiles in their face........and all this for £1.99!

Oh The Place You'll Go is a particular favourite, my children have lived in four countries and my eldest has attended 9 schools then the youngest two 7 schools each. Each of them have a hardback copy and at the end of the school year we had their teacher(s) and Lǎoshī write in the book about them.

Such beautiful memories. My eldest has 29 entries, inside the cover, on story pages and so on. My children are older now but still like to look back and remember, that class, that school and so on.

Anyway..... back to this which is brilliantly true ~

Just started Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors and I'm struggling to get past the names Bonnie Blue and Lucky Blue. I just envision such totally different people than the ones being described based on those names

I can't stand Sally Rooney.

1. She doesn't use quotation marks. It's gimmicky and adds nothing to the narrative. It's also pretty ironic how a writer doesn't value language or respect her own craft.
2. She's lazy. She likes to throw words around like "marxism," but she doesn't ever actually give us anything beyond the surface.
3. She's not a good writer. She uses passive-voice too often, imo.
4. She's a hypocrite. I don't want to hear about elitism, marxism, etc. from an author whose books are marketed to hell in mainstream media by a big name publisher. She is very much a part of the capitalistic machine.
5. She's annoying in interviews.

Here's me for March

5 stars for Broken Country and Dont Let Him In. It was a pretty nice reading month for me, no real duds

My worst read was The Murder Game by Tom Hindle it was ok but I only gave it 3 stars because it was way too similar to his Death in the Arctic.

Now on to April. My first read will be Ester Is Now Following You for the book club thread.

Ooh nearly forgot to mention the Elements of Marie Curie which I also gave 3 stars. Nothing wrong with the book and it was seriously interesting, I hadnt realised there were so many women in science at the start of the 20th century. But it was way too technical, pages and pages of technical scientific stuff which I found quite boggy to get through.

Are any of you in bookclubs? How honest are you if the book isn’t good. Maybe I’m too honest and should let things go and say ‘yeah, nice, good’ Got the feeling in my last meeting that my negative reviews aren’t appreciated

i’ve never been in an in-person one but thread regulars will know that my thoughts on where the crawdads sing got me politely asked to leave a facebook one likewise my thoughts on pretending by holly bourne - i thought the POINT was to write essays on your feelings!

i don’t feel that there’s any point in having a group discussion if ONLY positive reviews are allowed

I can’t do book clubs because I’m one of those who can’t remember a bloody thing when I’ve finished the book I really wish I could. I tried to blog book reviews and other than this is really good/crap it didn’t go far

The last library one I went to had two people who pretty much didn’t get anyone else get a word in. One of them dragged a bunch of dried herbs in to see if the smell reminded us of the previous book (which she had slated). She made such a mess with dried bits everywhere. I decided to leave after that last straw
