[Custard cream]

April was a great month for me! I don't think I've ever had this many 5 stars so close to one another! I do feel in a bit of a slump though now, nothing on my shelf is inspiring me but I don't want to buy more books just to get out of it.

I just started DallerGut Dream department store this morning. Bought it months and months ago simply because I loved the cover but only getting round to reading it now. Just seen your 2.5 star’s. Is it rubbish? Maybe I should put it off another while longer

Hi lovelies!! I haven’t been here for ages because honestly I haven’t picked a book up since January my wee one has been diagnosed with a life long condition and it just knocked the wind out of me and honestly I can’t really concentrate on books. I’ve listened to Harry Potter again and I started Fourth Wing on audible this week but actually reading words on a page
Anyway I had to come and share my joy at finding out that Remarkably Bright Creatures is being made into a film I don’t know if it’s already been discussed by I am DELIGHTED!! And Sally Fields is going to be in it!

Hopefully I’ll be back on full reading form soon

OH gosh, I’ve just realised it’s book club tomorrow. Our next ‘genre’ is planes, trains and automobiles. Anyone got any good ideas for books based around journeys? A lot of them read The Salt Path a couple of years ago and loved it.

I’m currently reading The Anomaly by Hervé Le Tellier. It’s an interesting concept with a doppelgänger theme but I’m finding it quite tricky to read.

I'm excited about RBC, I hope it's done well as I LOVED it. I'm sure we discussed it being made into a film and suggested casting, I will need to go and find those posts (I don't know who Sally Field is so don't think she was mentioned).

Life, Loss and Puffins by Catherine Ryan Hyde was quite good. Involves a long road trip to see the puffins but it's quite a good story! Only other one I can think of is Redemption by Jack Jordan which was a bit gun happy for me but well written and does involve a lot of road trips from what I can remember!

What about Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty? It’s more about the consequences of something that happens on a plane than an actual journey but might fit the criteria.

Not strictly speaking a plane - Enduring Love by Ian McEwan has a hot air balloon and definitely would lead to good discussions.

Very similar in vibe to The Salt Path is The Electricity of Every Living Thing by Katherine May. It's about a walk she did along the South West Coast Path and receiving an adult Autism diagnosis (though she uses the term Aspergers, as it was written before that was removed from the DSM). Likely people are familiar with her later book Wintering.

And the money I have saved, I know I asked for guesses the other week - not one of you was even close. I am embarrassed to say I have saved £4678.70p.

£60.39 on 99p books. - I would have bought these and they would have been bloatware on my Kindle aside from a few of them.

£2578.31 - on 369 new books hardback/paperbook that were not on WOB yet,l I buy from Indie book shops so pay rrp and not cheapyt Amazon prices. I would probably not even have read about 50% of these.

£1020 - on WOB.

£1,019 - on sprayed edges, special editions, clothbounds etc.

That is a staggering £4678.70p in almost 2.5 years. On average £38 a week . Almost £2k a year.

I realise I am in a privileged position to be able to spend so much on books but watching that amount add up in an account, I moved the amount I would have spent into a saving accout. Once it really started getting closer to £500 it became quite a fun challenge to see how far it could go.

No idea it would be so much. Here's to making better choices, both for me, from a consumerism pov and from an environmental one.

To read A Flicker in the Dark and get a side dose of amnesia....

I know I’m a terrible influence.. but you should break into that pot and get a couple of nice editions!

I’ve been thinking about the TBR chat from a few days ago and think I’m a bit of everyone’s perspective.. I love the idea of reading through all my books but wonder if that’s mostly so I have an excuse to buy more and thus would just repeat the cycle.. but do recognise and enjoy the privilege of being able to own all these books.. I think my ‘problem’ really is buying more books I’m desperate to read then when look at my TBR I remind myself of how many books I own that I really really want to read asap.

I read something on Reddit a couple of weeks ago that really resonated - ‘when I buy a book I feel like I’m buying the time to read it’.

Finally finished Death At The Sign of the Rook (Kate Atkinson). It was ok. Pace was a bit weird - felt really nicely paced initially then the last 100 pages were all action and I was left with whiplash.

Need to get started with We Solve Murders next I think.

Whilst I was away in the Cotswolds I managed to find the book that I was missing from the Mulberry Lane series by Rosie Clarke, the Mersey series by Pam Howes and The Spitalfieds series by Mary Collins. So, I am looking forward to hopefully reading these over the coming months that is if I manage to get round to reading them as currently I have lots of books that are on my tbr.

For context here is my Rosie Clarke shelf consisting of 5 books from the Harpers Emporium series, all 10 books from the Mulberry Lane series, one book Lizzie's Secret from the Workshop Girls series and 2 standalones which are A Mother's Shame and Nellie's Heartbreak.
