in the replies on threads there were booksellers who had customers with £400 and £500+ balances! Here I was being proud of myself if I managed to wait till there was £20 before spending
(I am not so keen about the breaking of Emilia’s privacy by sharing her balance with other customers! )

I am lucky if I keep £10. You just prompted me to check my balance and it updated to give me £10.

Being a bit of a book obsessive and closet control freak , I've found myself being a bit wary of things like Kindle. Although I can see their use when travelling.
So when I saw this pop up in my You Tube feed I thought I had to watch.
He talks about everything I was wary of, so in case this is important I'm posting it.
I'd far rather own the books I love rather than run the risk of someone snatching them away or altering/censoring them. Plus there's nothing like the smell of a good book.

I totally get that these are things people should be aware of, and Amazon are being sneaky by not making these changes known more widely, but as a big Kindle user there’s actually nothing in here that massively concerns me.

It’s never occurred to me to download books onto anything other than my Kindle (or the Kindle app which is sometimes use if I find myself out without my actual Kindle). For me the convenience of an ebook has a lot to do with the device itself - the ease of being able to carry round some many books at once, how easy it is to hold compared to physical books, the backlight for reading at night etc. so no desire to donwload things to other devices.

For the most part I’m also not overly bothered about the possibility that a book I’ve bought might no longer be available to me at some point in the future. I know different people read for different reasons, but for me it’s mainly a pass time/hobby. There aren’t many books that I revisit once I’ve finished them, and those that I do are classics or long standing favourites that I would be very happy to buy, or already own, physical copies of. Most of my Kindle reads are pretty disposable. If I’d bought them as physical copies I’d probably need to offload most of them anyway as I wouldn’t have the space to keep everything so for me buying physical doesn’t necessarily mean keeping things for ever either.

For me the convenience and ease of using a Kindle still wins…although if added up all the 99p’s I’ve spent over the years my bank balance might disagree!

Oh how cool! I love ephemera like that in second hand books.

I found a used tissue in a library book, with something objectionable on it. Problem was the book felt so contaminated I couldn't read it after that!

I think she's going to have several, she has 2 dragons afterall I can't wait for Onyx Storm. My favourite part of these books though is Tairn's grumpyness when he speaks down the bond, and now Andarna's sassyness in Iron Flame.

I like this thread because we're all polite and accept differing preferences. Whereas I went down a rabbit hole on 'threads' the other day, on the bookthreads topics and people seem really scathing about certain books and their readers. So many people laying into Rebecca Yarros, Sarah J Maas, and their readers just, because they are popular. And what's upsetting to see is how some book reviewers are being really quite pompous about their dislike for Fourth Wing saying it's absolute trash. Fine, that's a valid opinion but it really does seem like pile-on's happen on 'threads' and it feels a bit insulting. I like the Fourth Wing because of the escapism and the story. Alright, it's not Shakespeare, but its fun, and some reviewers seem hell bent on belittling people who like the series. At the end of the day we all like what books we like, and whilst I might not like certain books I don't go around belittling those that do.

Thank goodness for this kind thread. I've been following it for about a year and I've read so many good books thanks to the recommendations and discussions here.

I like that SJM and fourth wing are getting women back into reading fantasy!

So many people say their favourite books as children were something fantasy/magic related but then as adults we just read thrillers or romance etc.

So what they won't win any literary awards? If people enjoy them that's all that matters.

Uhm, wow. What a book. I almost don't know what to say about it. I loved Small Things Like These, but this is a much more magical book, written with such power in so few words. I highlighted several passages in this book and I see so many other Kindle readers have done the same...

"Everything changes into something else,
turns into some version of what it was before."

"I am in a spot where I can neither be what I always am, nor turn into what I could be."

So achingly beautiful, it packs a punch in so few pages.

I think this one is around 90 pages long. Just took me 45 minutes to read. I challenge anyone to find me a better novella than this one. 5*.

I dipped out of these threads a year or so ago when I lost my reading mojo and couldn't get it back for love nor money, but I'm back, baby! Eased into reading again via The Most Fun We Ever Had, which came up super cheap on Kobo and seemed to be highly rated online. It was readable but a bit like the literary equivalent of Love Island - entertaining enough, oddly compulsive, but ultimately not rooted in reality and laboured certain points painfully hard. Fine to break the seal but I won't be hunting down any more Claire Lombardo books, let's put it that way.

Moved straight from that onto Homecoming by Kate Morton, which was phenomenal and the perfect reminder excellent writing exists in the world.

I finished The Women by Kristin Hannah. I really enjoyed it. Her books always make me tear up which is unusual for me. I gave it 5 stars...first of the year for me. I needed to clean the house as I am having friends over for lunch Sunday and I am busy tomorrow and Saturday. Instead as soon I was got home from work I lay in bed finishing the book so now I will be cleaning until midnight

I am planning on reading The Favourites by Layne Fargo next. It only came out in January and reviews say it is part Wuthering Heights and part Daisy Jones and the Six which sounds right up my street.

I just finished Paris Hilton’s memoir. She has acted like a complete arse in the past and said & done some questionable things but I had no idea about her ADHD, the time in the troubled teen institutions (including the abuse she endured there( and her fertility problems. It was an interesting listen.

Interestingly I had my first ever DNF in the middle of a discussion on here! I’m usually a never DNF gal and will skim just to finish if I have to but I took a break from Dune to read Onyx Storm and when I went back to it I was still only 40% in, felt like I wasn’t making a dent and just thought, nah cba with this haha

I appear to have slept through some sort of Tattle crisis last night! Whatever happened I’m glad everyone’s still here!

Keeping it on topic, I finished Homecoming by Kate Morton last night. For the most part I really enjoyed it but I guessed the twist with a good chunk of the book left so it did feel like it dragged a bit in places waiting for the characters to catch up! It’s nearly 600 pages so probably could have been cut back a bit. Worth a read though if you like a family history/multiple timelines story.

Reading is about the only hobby I do these days so I’m thrilled to find some new book friends to chat with

Currently reading The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman and she’s a bit of a slog to be honest.
I have 4 in the series on my Kobo and they have come highly recommended from various Facebook groups but I don’t think I’d be rushing to tell anyone to read them …

Next on my list is The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni. Apparently the ending makes you want to throw the book across the room so I’m excited for that

World of Books might've been something I recommended! I am a big fan. I also really like Thrift Books, but they're only US-based so things take longer and you pay for shipping etc. It's my go to place for out of print historical romances (the sort with Fabio on the cover ).

Plus If you have a 'making' hobby (knitting, sewing, quilting, embroidery, woodworking etc) WoB is a great place to look for affordable books on the subject.

I recently ordered from Thrift Books for the first time. I guess I thought they were UK-based, even though I’m in the US, as one of the books I got had a train ticket from London to Oxford stuck in it. I don’t know why, but it brought me joy to find it!
