Advice on getting new puppy

We just let her out in the garden every half hour to an hour then she eventually learnt to ask if she needed to go.

She’s been a pretty easy puppy to be honest. We walked her off the lead from when she was first allowed out and she recalls like a dream now. Walking on the lead need some work as she tries to jump up everyone as she thinks everyone wants to be her friend... especially children!

Our vet said that borders are pretty much bomb proof and are great pets to have around family x
Oh that's great I'm so pleased for you! I love borders so it's great to hear a positive story 😊 did you get up to let her out at night too?

They are great 👍🏼

No she was fine at night, no accidents, my other half gets up early for work so she got let out as soon as he woke up

Be prepared for lots of accidents, barking at absolutely nothing and some sleepless nights :) once they are out of that stage it's wonderful! We actually have 2 puppies (5 days apart in age) it was incredibly hard at first but I wouldn't change it for the world. Just be stern with what you do / don't want them to do and they will be fine. Lots of toys to keep them stimulated x

I’ve met some charming border terriers. I’ve also met some not very charming ones. They can be very wilful as is typical of terriers. Pick your breeder carefully and ask for a puppy that hasn’t been vaccinated before you get them so you can decide when to give vaccinations. Too many people are vaccinating puppies before they leave the litter, due to vet pressure, and this never used to happen. One shot after age 10 weeks of DHP is sufficient. This is what the manufactures insert accompanying the vaccine says this.

Do not give a Lepto shot. Go the FB page Novibac Lepto4 Our Experiences for reasons not to.

A good FB Group to join is Canine Health Concern - Natural Healthcare. Also, 5he Raw and Holistic Cat and Dog Support Group.

An acquaintance I used to dog walk with had a wonderful border terrier female. I asked how she found her and she said she had to penetrate the inner sanctum of border breeders in order to get her.
😁

I've decided to halt looking for a puppy as I've been distracted by other breeds (cockapoo and cavapoo). I'm going to wait until I know exactly what I want .

I have a cockapoo....he’s amazing but he wasn’t my first choice of breed, so glad I waited and researched more x

I agree with PPs training and socialisation are key. We had some time off work in the first couple of weeks. Puppy classes were good as are exploring new places and meeting lots of new people and other dogs. Taking out on main roads on a lead and playing videos of fireworks, trains etc are all good practice in the early months

Owned dogs my whole life, currently have 6 (two different breeds) and am now a dog walker.

If you’re looking at getting a dog next year, I would say go to Crufts in March and look around discover dogs. With one of our breeds (Swedish vallhunds) we have so many people say they want one, but then admit they’ve never met one in person. 9 times out of 10 people will then change their mind and choose a different breed.

Socialisation is key. We had to have one of our puppies back at a year old because she was a nipper and the owner didn’t put any work in. We have now made up for it, although at 6 still can’t fully trust her and have to be very ‘on top’ of her behaviour.

I got my first ever dog in May, a little black pug :) He's adorbs!

He has slept all the way through from the first night we got him. His first ever toilet at home was on his bed haha. Pugs are notorious for being hard to toilet train, so we made sure to take him out every half hour at first (I took two weeks off and then my partner did). Sounds cliche but eventually it just clicked for him! He hasn't mastered actually asking to go outside yet though, but accidents are very minimal now (he's 8 and a half months old).

I would say invest in chew toys. They will rip cuddly toys apart in days, but a good chew toy will last ages. Kongs will be your best mate.

We had an open-top crate for our puppy. We had been shutting him in there in the day whilst we was at work and whilst he was sleeping. Then after a couple months we let him roam the living room in the day. Now, his crate is no more! He likes sleeping on the sofa at night (even though we bought him an expensive bed...)

He is super naughty at times but the cuteness makes up for it. You'll need to have lots of patience but even more love. Have fun!! :)

Thank you all so much. I'm in a bit of a dark place at the moment so have put all of this on hold. Still love the advice though as hopefully it will come in useful one day xx

Sorry to hear that, although you’re doing the sensible thing by waiting until you are ready to put 100% into your puppy. They really are like having a baby and I can remember being so tired when I first got my boy

Yes its exactly the sleepless nights that will tip me over the edge. I know my dark place will pass as they always do but I cant imagine having to deal with a puppy whilst in one x

I would say you absolutely need to be at home with them as much as possible for your own mental well being as well as theirs. Once they are through the puppy stage it will be much easier x

Yes I work from home so will be home 24/7 apart from school runs. That's one of the reasons I'd like a dog as it gets a it lonely on my own x
