I think the payment is probs a bit smelly. But warreva go get it girl. And yeah, it’s coz it’s China there’s a pout on about it.
Plenty of athletes are getting paid for winning their medals as well at the Olympics and I wouldn’t be too surprised if for the smaller or developing nations there are other incentives for other competitions as well

The UK army has pathways/recruits for Winter Olympics as well for example - only learnt this when looking at how athletes get into luge/skeleton - which struck me as a bit odd

Shes half Chinese so it’s really not that different from other athletes choosing to skate for other countries they have connections to - and arguably her connection is much stronger than someone with a great grandparent from the country

This just screams of Americans not being used to being the second choice
this. it’s no different to mondo duplantis choosing to represent sweden because they could offer more funding and his preferred coaching; the americans just get really awful about eileen because obviously it’s china.

some of the stuff that gets written about her is horrible, especially the comments about her father. alysa liu’s dad had four (deliberately chosen to be half white) children with a surrogate selected for her athletic abilities and doesn’t get half the amount of line stepping that gu’s anonymous dad does 🤷🏼‍♀️

Watching the four-man bobsleigh

The speedo top left of the picture says they're hurtling along at an absolutely terrifying 130km/h + by the bottom of the track

Commentator: "hmmm, the speed is not good enough"

😱 😱 😱

I always find it really interesting when you look up Olympians and see that their parents also had very good competitive careers in the same sport and also maybe made it to the Olympics themselves. It’s clearly a bit of a legacy/chasing fame for some of them

definitely. you see that with malinin - as much as i’m not a huge fan i thought it was really sad that his dad didn’t comfort or even say anything reassuring to him on camera after the singles. and i read that his mum doesn’t phone or contact him when he’s competing because she’s “too nervous”. you do wonder how many of them are living their not quite achieved dreams through their kids.

I think Alysa Liu’s family story is DEEPLY ducked up. I think commercial surrogacy is ducked up full stop, but I can’t imagine what drives a Chinese couple (Liu’s father had a wife who helped raised them, right?) choose a white donor? Transracial adoption - rightly - is fraught with ethical issues and rarely happens today, so I don’t see why a Chinese couple not wanting to have full Chinese kids is OK either.

Buying baby after baby so you can mould them into top flight athletes is utterly dystopian.

I recently read that his parents would incentivise him to win by saying they'd buy whatever he wanted. His two cats, for example, are apparently for winning worlds

TBH I've done this with my children none of which are Olympians.

Ffs overtime in hockey, I don't like this as with the golden goal rule it always feels like this can be accidental (unless your faves win😅)

it has been an INCREDIBLE game but i somehow knew it would come down to overtime. canada should have the advantage 3 on 3 but we’ll see.

is there a more annoying chant in all of sport than USA! USA! i don’t think so 🤦🏼‍♀️

I woke-up with a headache. No Sid. Now my stomach is sick. Get ready for the orange tit stain to be boasting about this. Too many men on the ice and nothing? 😭

The only good thing is that at least it was Jack who scored not one of the Tkachuks

among little facts I know about current hockey I know I don't like them

and Hughes brothers have a story of a powerful hockey playing mother behind them and this alone is lovely

Omg they are giving them the mascots now and despite being sad about their loss I find it absolutely hilarious how these mascots look so little compared to the big hockey outfits 😅

These mascots are so cute btw, I loved them all olympics and athletes seem to love them too

I didn’t know Jack Hughes name a few weeks ago and I’m now a Jack hughes fan 😂
as you should be! 😉 lost four teeth, stick right to the face, hopped back out there and got the gold medal goal 👏🏻👏🏻

his interview on nbc where he was lisping through all the new gaps in his mouth was weirdly adorable but also get to a dentist asap jack!
