I feel like the democrats downfall, or one of, is all the celebrity endorsements. Nothing turns normal hard working folk off more than some billionaire celebrity telling you how to vote. I feel like in the uk we vote more for a party, in America they love a figure head, a president, and I don't think Kamala had the presence or conviction to pull it off. That being said, I'm, no Trump supporter but I can see the short fallings in the democrats, they desperately need a stronger leader that embodies their values.

I keep hearing that Kamala wasn't a good candidate - can everyone remember who she was running against? A convicted felon who removed boxes of confidential information from the White House, lied about having it and stored it in a bathroom, he buried his former wife on his golf course for a tax break, he speaks about women, disabled people, minorities in a horrendous manner, he's besties with Putin - how come he is considered a good candidate?

It does still astound me that in this day an age a country like America is considering going backwards on women's rights. A women's right to an abortion should never be taken away. Ok there needs to be reasonable and medically advised cut off points but that's not what is a stake here. If it were a man who carried a baby this would not even be up for discussion.

I'm sure most voters would love to see politicians focus on their policies than name calling. It's infantile and they do it in the US and UK. It turns people off.
I like the way Trump turned it around at the end and made a joke of it, that's the best way to deal with it.

The option to access this doesn’t mean that every woman on the planet will avail of it. It means the ones that need it can do so legally and safely. It was the most horrific thing I've ever been through. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. 3 years on and it still think about him from time to time but thankfully I went on to have a healthy pregnancy and my 18 month old son is sleeping beside me peacefully

I definitely agree that the Democrats made a mistake in letting abortion rights become THE defining issue of their campaign. It's an incredibly important issue but day to day, other things, like the eocnomy and inflation, will be more on people's minds. And yes, the media theme of 'Vote Kamala so your daughters will have the right to an aborion when they grow up' was....weird. When my daughter was young I worried more about her access to good jobs and also I suppose a bit about whether she would be held back in the workplace because of sexism, and whether she would be vulnerable to DV because I was a survivor. Loads of female-centric issues really, but I can't say that planning for her potential future abortions was ever on my mind really

As someone from a country that only recently legalised abortion I don’t think its weird to say vote so your daughter would have the option to choose. No one sensible is saying they want their children to be having abortions, they just want a difficult decision to not be made any more difficult because they have to cross state lines or worry about dying if something goes wrong and they can't access one.

Ah I agree I think not voting is so dumb. Especially for women. Our foremothers fought and gave their lives for our right to vote. Every time a woman steps into a voting booth, it's a power move as far as I'm concerned.

Do you understand what murder is? It's the killing of another human being without justification or valid excuse. So when a woman has ten vodkas at an office party, sleeps with the guy in accounts, gets pregnant, decides she can't be arsed to raise the baby and decides to have it terminated... Do you see where I'm going with this? You have no argument, so never patronise me.

A fetus is considered a parasite until viability. The bible teaches a baby is not alive until they have drawn 3 breaths.

Women fought for the right to think for themselves and vote for whoever they want. What gives you or anyone the right to be angry at a woman for exerting that right. or to decide they need to be sectioned because their reasons for voting for a candidate were different to yours.

He would only of lived for a few minutes as once the valve in the heart that shuts in babies after birth closed over he would of been gone and I couldn't of coped with that ending the pregnancy when all he had known was the warmth of my belly and peace was better for me and him

I think we are very polarized online due to our own echo chambers we create. I rarely talk politics in online spaces, as everyone I know is extremely far left and curates their life around that, it's like they never get out of their echo chamber. I assume the same of MAGA people. Nobody sees others as humans with nuanced views, thoughts, it's just 'the other side therefore EVIL' and the internet has not helped. I believe most people be it in the UK, USA, wherever, are probably moderate on most things but the online discourse has gotten the parties here in the US to go insane to get all the online Twitter cred and stuff.

I’m old, and therefore might be misremembering, but I’m pretty damn sure that before social media, we didn’t all think that people with different political views were “evil”. Obviously there were pockets of highly polarised positioning, like the Welsh miners thought Thatcher was evil and there was extreme sectarianism in N Ireland and parts of Scotland, but mostly, we really weren’t that violently polarised.

Curating our entire personalities around our political position definitely wasn’t so much of a thing either. Like, if I met someone knew, I’d want to know what they liked to do for a hobby, music and books they liked, etc. Ascertaining their political position really wasn’t…a thing.

Social media! It’s got a hell of a lot to answer for. People sometimes say that religion is what will destroy human empathy but I don’t think that at all. I think social media is destroying it.

Do other oldie tattlers agree or am I wearing rose tinted specs about the recent past? I really would like to know!

its baffling isn't it - I get that people are tribal, I can feel it already with me being far more lenient with the Labour government than I would ever be with the Tories but I do struggle with this mindset. Like I don't understand how immigrants can vote for policies that hurt other immigrants.

As an immigrant I think it comes back to the identity politics thing, like just cos I’m an immigrant doesn’t mean I’ll automatically side with other immigrants especially if I feel I’ve worked hard to attain citizenship and am worried about my wages or job opportunities being undercut. Like most people vote on the basis of what they think is best for them and their families not on the basis of what they think might be better for other people who they don’t even know. Or am I unusually weird ad selfish for voting on that basis?

Also specifically with Latinos they tend to be small c conservative on social issues and Catholic values are still culturally important to many of them I don’t think we can ignore that factor.

Being called Latinx drives a lot of them potty if social media is to be believed. I think Kamala eventually dropped that tho

Either way I don’t think any Trump voter today is gonna be sat there with their head in their hands like “Oh my god what’ve I done?? I’ve made Christina Applegate’s kid cry!”
