It’s about when Mcfly split from Island Records back in 2007/08 (sorry if it’s been shared already)
THEYRE Britains biggest pop band, theyre film stars in the United States and star in the daydreams of teenage girls across the country. But…

pretty clear that Mcfly have always been very, very motivated by money.
“Business language comes up a lot in conversation with Danny…”
“What we've done is got our money that we've made from McFly and invested it into Super Records, which is our label….”
“you've got to invest to make money."
it’s interesting because obviously music is their career and their job so obviously money is central to that, but it’s not often very creative people who truly love music, speak about it in business terms.
I was a big Mcfly fan when I was a teen, but as I got older they really gave me the ick. I remember watching a documentary which follow them in their early days, when they lived in a house together in Harrow. The boys were all making fun of Dougie’s crush on Frankie who back then, was best known for being in S Club Juniors (oh god the cringe).
fast forward a couple of years and Dougie is in a relationship and living with Frankie in a flat in Edmonton (?!) in north London. They break up after about 2 years together, but then quickly get back together. By the end of 2010, they’d split up for good. Dpugie then checked himself into a rehab? Mental health? Facility.
ALL the blame seem to be levelled at Frankie by the press. His mum was making public calls for Frankie to leave Dougie alone.
specifically, I remember Danny being pretty shitty about her in interviews and on Twitter. Not super explicit, but he’d make a pained face if her name was mentioned in an interview, or like shitty things on Twitter.
Even at the time I remember thinking, isn’t it a bit weird to be so invested in your mates love life? They were both early 20s, so old enough to take care of themselves but also young enough that… sometimes breakups happen.
since then, it’s pretty much come out that Dougie was drinking heavily, and that was why he’d gone to rehab in early 2011. NOT because of Frankie.
At the time, rumours were that basically Frankie wanted a bit more of a settled life and grown up relationship, which is exactly what she did - she next dated Wayne Bridges who she has since married and had kids with. Meanwhile, Dougie has jumped from relationship to relationship and seems to have very different priorities in life.
so I’ve always felt the dog piling on Frankie was shit, and Danny contributed to that.
The irony of course, is that the Mcfly lads bar Dougie, all pursued the same thing Frankie did. Stable relationships. And still couldn’t empathise with her decision to break up with Dougie who clearly wasn’t the type of person to offer that.
it’s like they decided she belonged to Dougie? And how dare she reject him on the basis of reasonable relationship desires they themselves had? Like they expected her to put up and shut up.
an attitude which seems pretty prevalent among them still, IMO.
