Imogen, as I am unable to contact you in any other way, I am putting this statement here for you. You all know me at Laura, Imogen’s old best friend.
I want to start by saying that I have watched Imogen’s recent videos and can completely empathise with suffering from poor mental health. Although our friendship ended 9 years ago when we where 18, I truly wish you all the best and hope that you get the help that you need. But the reason I can empathise with how Imogen feels, is because her actions have caused me to feel this was for over 2 years, and after staying silent for so long, I feel now is the right time to come forward.
For those who may not know, between March 2018 and July 2018 Imogen made 6 videos in a series called failed friendships that are about me, these have, in total, nearly 1 million views between them. Imogen and I were very close friends from the age of 16-18, and we had a lot of fun together, but we also made mistakes, Imogen included. I am not the awful person she has made me out to be, at the same time I am not coming on here to call myself an angel. But I must tell you the truth - many of the story times that Imogen has released, about how I was an awful friend to her, are over exaggerated and at times completely fabricated. This can be proven by multiple timelines not matching up between her own videos.
Imogen used the name 'Laura' to hide my identity, but it didn’t last long. Since the first video about me was released in March 2018, I have received hate and death threats from Imogen’s fans on a weekly – if not daily – basis. I consistently have people telling me I am vile and I should die. I have had multiple members of my family contacted. I have had people find my address and threaten me that way. I have had my place of work contacted by Imogen’s fans trying to get me fired. All of this is from a channel that preaches positivity and bringing people up.
Imogen does not deserve hate, but by putting herself in the public eye, like anyone she will receive some negativity, but at least she’s making a living. For me, I never asked to be in the spotlight, yet this story time saga has affected me and everyone around me, I am receiving hate regularly and have felt too afraid to speak out, especially without a platform to do so.
You may think I am lying. But what reason do I have to lie? My name has already been tarnished and the damage to my mental well being is done. But for those who want to know the truth, you just have to pay enough attention to Imogen’s story times to know that her version of events do not match up. As a key example, Imogen gives two different dates as to when her and I fell out, one aged 15 and one aged 16, both backed up by elaborate stories to make them sound believable, however the fact is neither of them are correct.
Imogen’s videos themselves are the evidence. In the videos called ‘night to remember’ and ‘the end’ she recalls a night out where I supposedly set her up to get beaten up in a club, and recalls we couldn’t report it to the bouncers as we were underage. She calls this the event that ended our friendship, but this event is simply fabricated. Imogen and I met when we were 16 and were friends until we were 18, I was with her on her 18th birthday. The reason we fell out it because I no longer wanted to be friends with someone who was pursuing a grown man with a child. Drama follows Imogen and I didn’t want a dramatic life.
This next part of this statement is incredibly hard to talk about, but my story would be incomplete without telling it.
In the video titled ‘the end’, I was devastated to find out that Imogen had revealed to her hundreds and thousands of followers that I had had an abortion when I was younger. For years I kept this a closely guarded secret, with only a handful of trusted friends I could console with, even my family did not know. This event remains the most traumatic experience of my life. I can never express to you the feeling of having the most traumatic experience of your life broadcast to the world, to your family, through someone else’s voice. Someone else who has now financially profited from this experience. When the video was first uploaded I would lie awake at night reliving my experience in my head, haunting me, and for this reason I have now become addicted to sleeping pills.
I want to end this statement by asking any of her fans who are reading this to really reflect on what we can learn from this situation. Imogen does not deserve hate, but I do think myself and everyone else she has berated through her story times deserve an apology. We all make mistakes when we are younger, but your fabrication of stories about me, and your fans reaction, have destroyed my life for the last two years.
Why have I come forward now? I don’t want your fans – who are often young girls - to think its normal to talk about intimate parts of other people’s lives on the internet for hundreds of thousands of strangers to judge you, leaving yourself too scared and unable to speak up.
You preach that mental health matters - but seem to forget about mine in this situation.
