I don’t mind it at all. ‘Matildas’ was too cutesy for my liking, but ‘Lionesses’ conveys ferocity and power and is a direct reference to the England badge. If women’s football is going to be afforded more media coverage, referring only to ‘the England team’ has the potential to be confusing, and I find ‘Lionesses’ less ‘minimalising’ then a differentiation that relies on ‘England Ladies’ or somesuch (which has patronising echoes of ‘lady doctor’)

I’m guessing it’s a riff on ‘Waltzing Matilda’.
Could have been worse, I suppose - they’re lucky they’re not ‘the Dingoes’ or ‘the Koalas’
Edit: ooof, it was even worse: “they were known as the "Female Socceroos" before 1995”, and they disliked ‘Matildas’ so much it took them 5 years to accept it.
