I don’t mind it at all. ‘Matildas’ was too cutesy for my liking, but ‘Lionesses’ conveys ferocity and power and is a direct reference to the England badge. If women’s football is going to be afforded more media coverage, referring only to ‘the England team’ has the potential to be confusing, and I find ‘Lionesses’ less ‘minimalising’ then a differentiation that relies on ‘England Ladies’ or somesuch (which has patronising echoes of ‘lady doctor’)I honestly hate that everyone calls them 'lionesses' all the time.
The men's team are never referred to as 'lions' when news reports, papers, pundits, etc are talking about them.
It just seems, I don't know, cutesy or something and irritates the duck out of me.
