Why is life so expensive?

Same! We currently live with our in laws with 3 kids as we had been renting but our landlord decided to sell up. Whilst renting we go into a lot of debt, not even on holidays or expensive dinners out purely putting food shops and bills on credit cards. My MIL said we could stay with her whilst we save to buy and settle our debts. We’ve been here two years and we are finally debt free, trying not to spend unnecessarily. We live on the south coast and we do need quite a sizeable deposit. He works full time and I work part time to avoid nursery costs. Our car blew up last week so have just had to pay out for a new car. Feels like one step forward three sets back. I know my children are fed, warm and loved but it kills me that everything now is very materialistic and I feel dreadful that I can’t buy them what their friends have as I know having our own home will be worth it in the end.

The thing that’s really getting me down at the moment is feeling like I can’t save. I try and put away £200 a month and even that is a struggle at the moment. I feel like I earn decent money but what’s left over after rent, extortionate council tax and bills is crap. I don’t get paid for another 2 weeks and I have £60 left in my bank account. So now I have to chose between taking out of savings or using my credit card - neither of which are ideal options! I just want to be in a position to buy a house but to get anything half decent around here I’d be looking at £250k plus so I’m a long way off :(

I find budgeting so hard. I'm normally really organised but budgeting for some reason just doesn't work. I don't know whether it's because I'm not doing it properly or because I'm too rigid with it. I think it maybe that I'm too strict and then I go off track because I've come on my period or something so I buy food/junk that wasn't accounted for.
also why is healthy food so expensive! Fruit and veg should not cost as much as it does!! It's actually ridiculous!

I've been feeling the same way recently, we bought our house 5 years ago, a tiny 2 bed in a nice area. Anything bigger was way out of our price range, but you know everyone says get on the ladder and its easier.
We have now outgrown it completely, one 3.5 year old and a whole load of stuff kids come with. We both now work from home and will be permanently, so desks ect. We haven't got a hope in hell of moving to a bigger house to grow our family, I'd love more children. We both have ok jobs and earn an average wage. But at the end of the month there is just nothing left! Everything goes on bills and food.
Its so frustrating. I know we are lucky to have the house we have and I feel bad when I complain, but we work hard and our money seems to go nowhere!! Males me wonder what is the point?

It’s my goal to move out next year (moved back home after relationship break down) but saving is so hard! I’m trying to learn to drive but I feel like it’s one or the other 😔 Next year I’m not going to buy anything impulsive (clothes, shopping online etc) and really stick to a budget each month. Private rents are expensive in my city and I think I’d barely have much left after rent/bills/food each month but saving for a deposit for a home would take me years!

Learning to drive is killing me £160 a month, and my childcare is £600. I’m lucky family can have her twice a week. And then you have bloody “Influencers” being gifted cars, luxury skin care, holidays.
It’s just me and my girl so after childcare, driving lessons and paying for my car as well as rent and food and bus fare I’m skint.

Does anyone have success with couponing? I see people online with huge hauls for like £3 but then I think, is it stuff I would even use!

I remember watching extreme couponing years back and looking at it. From what I gather its really an American thing and the UK just doesn't have good deals like they do

I really wanted to get into couponing but they’re hard to find, and the shows make it look so easy 😭

Feel like even when I budget there's always something unaccounted for
Why do household appliances all break at once?! No joke, so far this month these have broke:

*Hoover (motor burnt out)
*Kettle (wouldn't switch off when boiling)
*Washing machine leaking (hole in the rubber seal)

🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Toiletries, make up etc always continently run out at the same time too

Because, capitalism.

I know you’re joking, but Google “Planned Obsolescence”.

All the big companies are doing it (tech such as Microsoft or home appliances such as washing machines etc) but the biggest one caught with their hands in the pie was Apple. They were busted a couple of years ago deliberately sending out updates to run down the batteries of their older iphones as a push to get people to buy new ones.

Putting in a kill switch to their own products? Sounds pretty capitalistic (and wasteful) to me...
