Why is an Epidural sometimes not successful?

I had to have an emergency c-section & the anaesthetist couldn’t get this in the right place so I had to have general anaesthesia. Is this a common thing? It’s been playing on my mind recently.

Could it be due to your contractions, if they were too close together or you weren't able to keep still? The spinal block also takes a few minutes to take effect so in an emergency situation it might have been faster and safer to knock you out? I had an elective c section so wasn't in labour when I had mine. Contact your hospital and ask for a debrief/ copy of your notes to help understand the process if you think it may help. My friend had a really bad birth trauma and this helped her a lot.

Hi @Hmmmjustreading it can be quite common as when you’re doing an epidural or a spinal block you’re going by feel only, you can’t actually see the right place you’re going and it’s such a delicate area they wouldn’t want to try too much times and they wouldn’t want to waste time trying again if it was an emergency also. A GA section can be quite traumatic so I hope you’re feeling okay xx

possibly I just remember them trying to do it a few times and the contractions getting more intense. It’s all a blur really, I think I should contact the hospital. It’s so odd How it just plays on your mind...

yes it is a traumatic situation as they want to do it all so fast for obvious reasons, I just don’t underStand it, so it’s Making me feel a lot of things. Otherwise I’m okay and super happy with my baby. Thank you.

Contact your birth afterthoughts team and ask why the epidural wasn’t successful and to go through your notes with you about the entire birth. It’s a very delicate area and difficult to find the right space, especially in an emergency situation where you are already in labour. Sometimes people actually are kind of immune (the wrong word) to epidurals so they don’t take anyway. Spinal blocks didn’t work for me personally as I’m larger so my back space was bigger and therefore needed an epidural…there are a whole host of reasons. I’m sorry you had a traumatic birth experience, birth trauma is a very real thing and it’s best to contact your hospital asap so you can begin processing it as it can hang over you for a long time, speaking from experience. Congratulations on your baby xx

it’s good to know this, it’s already helping me to feel better. I’m definitely going to contact the hospital. Thank you 🙂

There's quite a few reasons why they can't find the right space. Simple things like just the normal shape of your spine/posture. This is quite a common one.
Weight is another big factor in not being able to find the right spot too.

Contact your birth reflections team and you may get some answers.
