When did you first feel really old?

I’m 20 and felt it recently because I’m starting college and will be surrounded by people just turned 16, I have a nearly 2 year old, moved out 4 years ago, I drive etc, run 2 businesses

My eldest nephew became a dad last year, making me a great aunt at 31! That was weird, I've been a great aunt from a niece through marriage for 4 years but my direct nephew just felt strange!

Felt old when they stopped ID’ing me for alcohol at the checkout. Think this was my late 20’s, but the realisation that I thought I didn’t look any different to when I was younger, and to suddenly realising I obviously do look different and wondering what had changed.

I also always wonder when I’m actually old, what will my generation look like in general. For example, most old ladies who are 80/90 have short hair/ permed hair. Most have similar style old fashioned clothes . But when I’m old, will I still be dressing the same as I do now? Jeans, trainers etc. Or will I suddenly be wearing something different. Or will jeans and trainers be the new ‘old fashioned’. And will I suddenly want short hair?!

I’m 30 and have definitely had a mini-crisis about it! I quite frequently skip an entire decade in remembering things, like thinking 2005 is more like five years ago than FIFTEEN!

I vividly remember arranging an assessment centre for apprentice roles a few years ago and the first time we hired someone with a DOB of 2000 I had to take a little minute 🤯

I do this too! To me anything after about 2004 I think of as being “recent” 😂 My mum says she is the same but thinks of the 80s being only a couple of years ago. It’s scary how fast time goes!

I'm three zero on Sunday (I can't even type it, nevermind say it out loud) and I'd say I started feeling old after 25

I don't have kids but I did settle down when I was 18 with my partner after having a wild time 16-18.

We were watching an old football game the other night from 2010 and I was trying to work out if I was at the game and I was like nah I wasn't there I was only 10, no love you were 20 😂

I’m in my late twenties, but felt very old when the music videos I grew up with were shown on MTV Classic last year  I also felt very old at work when I found out some of my colleagues were in their teens.

Basically there are so many babies on this thread, try being over fifty, then you'll realise that 30etc is nothing.

To be honest it doesn't bother me, but I do worry about my wife dying before me. As I don't have many close relatives and any kids, it is a concern.

After I turned 30 I just felt really old, I’m now 35 and try not to think about it too much. Getting old scares me. I think it’s because death scares me and we’re always one day closer.
At the same time though, as I get older I kind of like the person I’m becoming. I used to be quite an angry person, very insecure and extremely self conscious to the point I couldn’t even go out in public without feeling anxious. As I’ve gotten older I’ve calmed right down and for the most part I’m genuinely happy.
I agree with someone above who said they think of 2005 as like 5 years ago. It scares me when I realise how long ago those days actually were 😂

The thing is, getting older is not guaranteed. Life is a journey, I think the o.p meant older as being at a different stage of adulthood

Just now, whilst reading this thread.

I'm 53!
Agreed, I was alright then I read this. I’m 43 😀 controversially I think it’s a generational thing as I find millennials have a much more traditional view of the world than generation x.

I don’t feel old yet as I’m 26 but I used to think 35 was the age classed as “old”.. since getting older the number has got higher 😂 it went to 40 then 45 then 50. I’d say “old” is when you can’t have kids (for females) and you’re going through the menopause. For men I’d say it’s when they get too tired or weak to be able to work (so basically just a bit younger than retirement age).
I find it interesting that for you women are 'older' at a younger age than men, when women live, on average, 6-8 years longer!

Seeing pop stars who would have been my contemporaries, looking their age in their 50s or 60s. Also my mum is in a care home with dementia and she was only 23 when she had me. Decades fly by.

I’m the youngest at work so I still feel young at 27 but at the same time they like to remind me what they were doing at my age. Pretty much all married with kids and their own homes. I’m single and living with parents 🤷🏼‍♀️

I guess it’s because men don’t have an “expiry date” on having children and also men retire at an older age but it’s just what I feel and what I think of when it comes to old age.

Late 30s and don't feel "old"- it is surprising to me how many people feel old so young. You couldn't pay me to go back to my 20s, I much prefer the 30s, so maybe that helps

Tell me your secrets! I’m starting to feel so old in my late 30’s 😫 I’ve become like a little old lady who reminisces about the good old days’ of the 80’s and 90’s. Oddly growing up and even in my 20’s I really believed I would never age, I just didn’t believe it would happen, I reasoned that I looked in the mirror every day and nothing changed and as long as I looked in a mirror every day I would never get wrinkles. It made total sense to me. I was wrong!
