What makes someone posh?

For me, when I hear the word posh I think of families with old money, very well spoken (made in Chelsea accents) private schools, big houses with lots of land, horses, luxurious holidays all the time, wealthy but the sort of wealth where the person don’t have to post designer brands on Instagram or brag and name drop, I feel you can just see when someone has money. It sounds weird but in the past when I’ve been in London me and whoever I’m with have said.. they’ve got money, she’s got money etc

When their house looks like a charity shop filled with old wood furniture, expensive rugs, traditional lamps, drapes, mirrors, etc. Sunken/built in shelves that go all the way around the room filled with books. Lots of tat and trinkets everywhere that probably have personal meaning. Likely to be extremely dusty because they don't have a cleaner/maid despite popular belief that posh people have staff. House is covered in pet hair. A dog or cat sleeping somewhere. No TV in the living room, or if they have a TV it's modest sized not these 50 inch cinema things.

Whenever I see a property like this on a holiday site, like Air B & B I instantly feel put off as it just gives me dirty vibes. I don't know why, I just always expect everything to be covered in an inch of dust and have a bit of a musty smell

I think it's relative really. I know people who own horses but I'd never in a million years call them posh. It's really hard to actually say what I think is posh as everytime I think of something I think "oh no, so and so does that and they're not posh" etc

A lot of scruffy people have horses up our way , particularly in certain villages. They pull little carts or ride them bare back, whereas the posh people have fancy bridle for their horses.

Anyone else noticed that horses are a female hobby, rather than a male one?

I know a lot of horsey people and they are as far from posh as you can get. One lives in a council flat in a very rough area lol. It’s a bit of a myth that owning horses equals posh in my experience. For example the gypsey and traveller community are very horsey and I don’t think anyone would call them posh!

I've known plenty of women horse enthusiasts. The only male one I have known was from the Traveller community, where I think it appears to be more of a male hobby.

I know about a dozen of Oxbridge grads, all very smart and hard working, but none of them are posh.

It’s how you carry yourself. You could have all the money in the world and make a LV bag look like £10 off a market

Now, this is the thing about how the goalposts have shifted over the years for poshness. Back in my younger days anyone was thought to be posh if they had a colour TV, I kid you not. Then people were thought to be posh if they went to Spain for their jollies, or even owned a car!

Nowadays I think the word posh has been replaced by snob, or prude. And my definition would be someone who is stuck up and looks down on folk. . There's nothing else to it really any more.

I think it's different here in Ireland compared to what has been said about England. From what I've seen here, you would deem someone to be posh, based mostly on their accent and then on where they live.
