What Do You Believe In?

I love all these different ideas and theories about what happens when we die.
It's so endlessly fascinating to see the different beliefs people have.

I didn't vote in the poll, as none of the options fit my view that beyond lies forgiveness.

At which point you can define that how you wish, in whatever religious or philosophical tradition, and whether you chose to accept being forgiven.

What religion do you subscribe to and is it your choice or just how you were brought up?
Are you spiritual?

Personally, I think we are born, we live, we die and that's it.


No judgement. Each to their own. Nobody needs to argue about their religion here; just sharing beliefs.

I agree, I think if I was pushed I’d say that I believe there’s nothing after death, but I wish I didn’t feel that way, I think it would be easier.

Take comfort in knowing that none of this really matters because we're just a tiny blue planet floating in space.

However at my step dad's wake, there was a priest who gave a blessing over the open coffin and I could see that it was giving people some kind of peace if u can call it that

For me it's unnecessary to feel the need to believe, I respect those who do as that is what they need

I went to a medium before lockdown there was a group of us, I never knew this woman, she called on two people then called on me, she said I have your brother here, mentioned his name, its an unusual name from the 50's, said a few correct things about our family, only we knew, he gave her a message to give me which was comforting and so true. So I don't know what to believe x If we all don't meet up spiritually what is the point of us being here...

Yes; I think the comfort of religion is a good thing for people.
Not something I feel mysef but, as you know, this is a weird old world and we've very little control over any of it so having faith that there is something worthwhile at the end of it can certainly be a comforting thought for those with loved ones who've passed or who are nearing mortality themselves.

Unfortunately I'm just too cynnical I guess and think once it's done, it's done.

IMO there’s no afterlife, to me it’s simply to comfort people and help them believe we’re not just insignificant ants who are here for a minute. I do wish I wasn’t so cynical though, the comfort must be nice.

I’m Irish Catholic. My mum is Church of England but my late dad was Irish Catholic- so we were brought up as such. Myself and my two siblings were all baptised, made our First Communions and were confirmed. I’m the only one who still practices although I don’t often go to church. My brother and sister aren’t religious at all, although my religion brought me a lot of comfort when my dad was dying, as i felt it brought me closer to him.

I definitely believe in heaven although I’m not sure about hell. I heard enough preaching about that at my convent school. And there’s definitely a fair few things I’m not in total agreement with the Catholic Church on but that’s another story…

My parents have been dead 22 and 11 years respectively and they pop up in my dreams. Always the same, they've gone away somewhere and my father visits occasionally but refuses to say where they are.

Very similar to me. My Dad died 21 years ago and my Mum 11 years ago. I can’t recall ever having dreams about them though.

One thing that bothers me about the thought of an afterlife is when people talk about your loved ones always being around, watching over you from beyond the grave. When I die, I don’t want to come back. I don’t want to have to watch my loved ones in pain, upset and grieving me. Equally I wouldn’t want to see them cheering and celebrating either, which is more likely!

I also believe that life has zero meaning whatsoever, and that gives me great comfort.

I think this is the thing that is difficult for us humans to grasp; the finality of it.

I think of it as equal to going to sleep; once you're gone, you don't know what's happening outside and it's just... done.

The pain of loss, the agony of depression, the weight of sheer effort it can take to get by day-to-day, it all just goes. Yet, we'll not know because we'll be gone.

I believe the same as you which I thought would scare me when my father passed away last year but I found it comforting. I dont think I’ll ever be reunited with him but one day I’ll be gone and the pain will be gone too. Makes me want to make the most of this life too. I don’t know if that makes sense!

I’m not religious but I do like to believe that there is some sort of afterlife as I find it comforting to know I may possibly see my family members who have passed again. I think the reason we like to think that there is an afterlife is because thinking once we are gone that’s it does seem very final, also it makes me sad to think once I’m gone I will never see my kids again

For what purpose, and created by whom?

Honestly, I’m not sure as I’m yet to come to a conclusion… but my strongest feeling is another life form which is superior to us, or the elite who use us as ants.

Feel like there’s a bigger picture somewhere. I find life cruel and predictable so simulation theory is my only explanation 🫠

Wasn't it though? I lost a week reading about the religious cross over throughout various civilisations and the aliens.

From a Buddhist atheist (nope, not a contradiction - original Buddhists don’t believe in God, it’s a non-theist religion) at 0 to around mid 30s, to an agnostic/open minded/don’t know, after. I’m actually desperate for an afterlife. I really, really hope that will happen. Re-birth sounds absolutely dreadful though. I’m happy to be gone forever rather than go through that.
