Hi all, I’m after some help in regards to the steps my daughter/I need to take next in regards to uni applications. She has her conditional offers in and has chosen her firm and insurance choices on ucas. What do we do next lol I’m a bit confused if we do finance first or do we start looking for accommodation? She’s got uni of Manchester as firm choice so can we only look at accommodation there for now and not for her insurance choice? She’ll be studying midwifery (as long as she gets her grades in summer of course) but I’ve no idea if she needs to look at specific accom for that or just go for what she likes? Ahhh I never went to uni so literally have no clue what to do and the internet advice is confusing the heck out of me ‍

Hi, congratulations to your daughter for getting her offers!

I would take a look at the Uni of Manchester’s website regarding accommodation as each university often uses a different process. You should be able to apply now for accommodation, with it finalised once the uni place is confirmed after A level results. Most unis only let you apply for accommodation if you place it as your first choice, but definitely check with the insurance university in case this is different for them. I don’t know if it’s still an active forum, but The Student Room was really helpful for me when I was preparing for uni. I’d recommend you take a look, there are often threads for accommodation and applicants. Although I last used it about 10 years ago!

Regarding student finance, you can apply now for 2022-23 courses. I think you’ve got quite a long time to get it sorted so there’s no rush, but it’s nice to have it ticked off!

I went to uni in 2014 (not too long ago but feels like forever) Manchester Metropolitan Uni. (My firm choice)

Applying for student finance was a bit of a ballache. I’d try and get that done sooner rather than later as I know there’s a cut off date.

Is your daughter at sixth form/college? As there should be a nominated member of staff who knows the processes for SF and should be able to offer any support to your daughter.

I can’t remember when in the year I applied for my accommodation but there was a section on the uni’s website on how to apply and any deadlines.

I didn’t get into my preferred accommodation as there were loads of applications and I was placed into private halls as opposed to halls which were directly organised via the uni.

Be prepared to find everything a bit confusing and stressful, but everything will work out in the end. It did for me and all my other friends who I met at uni

I would also advise starting the student finance application process sooner rather than later. It can be really troublesome at times and you'll have plenty of time to sort any issues if they arise.

If you can, go to the offer-holder open days. They will do tours of the accommodations available and it really makes a difference to see them in real life

My son is in the same situation. Definitely apply for finance now, it’s open and likely to be sorted much quicker than later in the year. Also as above try and go to offer open days, they are really useful and view the accommodation. The Uni will advise when the accommodation booking opens, usually around now for those who have it for the first choices. Lots of luck.

I am coming from Australia for a semester of study abroad next year and don't know whether to go to Leeds or Nottingham. I was wondering whether Leeds or Nottingham had better nightlife? And which would you say is safer and cheaper? Don't really care about academics too much. Thank you

I would say Leeds but I’m probably bias as I’m from Yorkshire

Leeds. Much cooler. I worked in Nottngham for a while and never really liked the city. It's getting better for cool independent places but it's not on a par with Leeds. Nottingham also has more of a reputation for some dodgy areas (I never felt unsafe there but I wasn't a student there, which is when you're more likely to end up in the worse areas of town).

Having said that, if it's Nottingham University (not Trent) you'd be going to then bear in mind it's a campus university, rather than being City-based, which I understand Leeds is. I went to a City-based university and loved being able to both have decent university nights but also being able to head into the city easily on foot for bars and clubs that might be frequented not solely by students.
